1. Allow set Style Override Highlighter as red stroke instead of blue background color so that it does not obscure style highlighting

   Style Override Highlighter's appearance (blue background) conflicts with the still existing feature of highlighting styles with different colors, in order to visually identify what parts of the text use what style, accessible via scripts such as Stylighter (http://www.indiscripts.com/post/2013/11/stylighter-1-4-for-indesign-cs4-cs5-cs6-cc).

   Being able to set it back to red stroke over text instead of a background color, as it was before the Style Override Highlighter button was officially added, would allow to see at the same time the style being used (by the color of the background) and whether it had overrides (by the presence of a red stroke). That was possible before Style Override Highlighter, but not anymore.

3. Object layer to InDesign layer

   It would be great to be able to place contents from different object layers in supported image files to different Indesign layers.
   I have a request from one of my printing suppliers that wants all black text to be on the same InDesign layer but currently this is not possible as the imported image, a keyline can only exist on one layer at the time. The keyline both contains a keyline frame in cyan and a keyline reference to be printed in black

4. Change text & add button on message window when trying to close a file while background task is running

   When you try to close a file while a background task is running you get a warning (Screenshot A). The word "cancel" appears there 4 times, so a fast reader would think clicking on "Cancel" will cancel something. But that's wrong. If you click on "Cancel", the window is closing. Nothing else.

   So please change the button to "Close" (and in the German version to "Schließen" instead of "Abbrechen") to make clear nothing is cancelled.

   In addition to that it would be nice to have a second button that helps the user to get directly to the background task panel. (Screeshot B)

5. Accessibility—Artifact tables for layout, but keep their content

   Sometimes designers use a table for layout purposes, not for a traditional spreadsheet-like matrix data in columns and rows.

   Example: A table that creates a complex, multi-celled form. For layout, it's easier to create rows and columns to hold the form labels and form control fields.

   However, when the form is exported to PDF, the table structure itself is not needed and often gets in the way of many assistive technologies.

   Need a way to artifact the table structure itself, but retain the content within the table as live text and form fields. And of course, have it correctly tagged and in the correct reading orders in the PDF.

   Some sample forms are attached.

6. Table of content – Styling improvement

   1) Please make the TOC dialogue box scaleable: especially the include paragraph styles box is unmanageable (long names are not visible and after applying settings to a style it scrolls back to the top of the list)
   2) Please include option to strip or override character styles in TOC
   At the moment you need a lot of paragraph styles to set up the TOC, especially when having multicoloured headlines, both in document and TOC
   3) Please give text boxes an option "include in TOC" (helpful when having the same headline on several pages) and the option to enter alternate wording and line breaks. For easier formatting of the TOC it would be great to have the possibility to make groups (chapters)

7. Link Font Size with Leading

   As someone who is often laying out text in large booklet type documents, I often need to adjust text and leading on text to visually suit the design Im working on. An annoying function Ive run into (definitely not the end of the world) is that if I may need to adjust the size of the font and the leading of it to suit what I need... If I then adjust the size of the text, the 'custom' leading size doesn't constrain to the size of the font as you increase it.

   This would be an awesome feature to be included, and would save a bit of time when working with fonts and text sizing.

8. Allow data merge placeholders to be used directly in QR Code URL & Text

   Data merge placeholders like <<Sample URL>> do not work when used in QR Codes.

   That would be cleaner and easier to use than the current data merge which requires the syntax described on https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/data-merge.html

   The Edit QR Code dialog should be improved to support these placeholder values.

9. Still need MORE design options Forms via InDesign

   This is still a current problem, it has been posted before but CLEARLY many people still have this frustrating problem that InDesign cannot preform the ENTIRE task of design and execution of an interactive form without the use of Acrobat. Specifically text colour and alignment/positioning in field.

10. Improving table styles

    Problems in the development of tables
    Currently we have some drawbacks when it comes to automating as much as possible the application of the tables by using "table styles", this is because our tables have 4 different sectors (hotrizontals), unlike the possibility that Indesign offers only 3 types of rows "header rows", "footers rows" and "text rows". This, for the moment, we solve it in the following way: once we apply the style of table, we select the rows that we want to change and we apply by hand the "cell style".
    One possible solution is that the "style of tables" menu will allow you to incorporate more rows according to need, choosing the cell style you want and even being able to define in those headers parameters such as the number of rows they will occupy.

11. End-notes and Footnotes URLS

    I do a lot of books for Print and digital (pdf and ePub). End-notes have always been a problem, even now that Indesign supports End-notes.

    For PDF and ePub export , in order to have the end-note reference clickable to redirect the user to it's corresponding end-note, then a link back again, I have to do this manually.

    This is a massive manual process...

    1. Let's say I have 100 end-notes. With each end-note reference, I have to place a new 'Hyperlink Destination' (for the return link)... That's going through the document, and placing 100 hyperlink destinations.

    2. Then, I go to each end-note and I place both a 'hyperlink destination', then a 'new hyperlink' back to the end-notes reference (text anchor created when I added the hyperlink destination). So I'm now up to 300 manual urls/destinations I've had to create.

    3. Now to finish, I now go back to each end-note reference and create a new hyperlink to it's corresponding end-note (text anchor).

    So now I've had to add 400 links/destinations manually. It would be soooo nice that, just like the Table of Contents which auto creates urls to it's corresponding list items, that footnotes and end-notes would automatically create reciprocal URLS.

12. EPUB CSS output could be improved quite a lot

    So I’m currently in charge of Readium CSS, which is a project related to Readium 2 (link: https://github.com/readium/readium-2), a complete rewrite of Readium SDK, which you may know in the form of a Chrome app – this Chrome app is actually advised by InDesign engineers in the InDesign forums whenever a rendering issue pops up so I assume InDesign engineers know it exists.

    Unfortunately, there are a lot of CSS issues piling up right now and InDesign’s output could really do with some significant improvements to allow for better cross-platform support and rendering. Indeed, Readium 2/CSS is meant to be used with any stack/rendering engine, so it won’t be tied to Webkit, and that changes the situation quite a lot.

    I won’t necessarily go into details since the User Experience of posting this idea is abysmal (can see like 5 lines of text right now and I can’t expand the textarea) but here’s some issues for which a fix would be greatly appreciated:

    1. if you’re outputting prefixed properties, please output all necessary prefixed properties and the standard one. It’s indeed been a bad practice to not do so and it creates severe maintenance issues for Reading Systems over the long term (for vertical writing in Japanese for example, we’ll have to pre-process stylesheets and add the missing CSS properties so that it can render well on all platforms);

    2. for transforms, which are sometimes used for objects (scaled, rotated, etc.), I can’t guarantee rendering will be OK, especially as only some prefixed CSS properties are output (Kobo now has a specific guideline addressing this issue);

    3. more generally, the default for objects’ output (e.g. images), with the container sized using pixels values, is plain wrong – it only works because we have safeguards to deal with it, so that images don’t become a huge mess. Same for iBooks BTW, which even have a specific CSS declaration in its default stylesheet just because of that.

    4. absolute positioning, which is sometimes used for objects with several images/frames, is explicitly discouraged in the EPUB spec itself for reflowable text so you should assume it will create rendering issues in at least some Reading Systems;

    5. the way embedded fonts are output (font-family) is wrong, and puts a burden upon other authors.

    6. if color is black, you don’t need to output it (Kindle even had to take the liberty of sanitizing this declaration so that it doesn’t create issues in night mode i.e. it removes it entirely).

    7. absolutely-positioned <span> in fixed-layout is now strongly discouraged in the iBooks guidelines because it breaks search and selection (providing users with a subpar UX).

    8. you export several languages in metadata and this is fine. However, we have a spec issue there: there is nothing to define which language is the primary language of the publication, which can create significant edge cases (iBooks, for instance, defines the last language item as the primary language for the publication, which means it may lay out an english book right to left if the last item happens to be arabic because there are arabic characters here and there).

    There’s more but listing them there is quite uncomfortable. So please feel free to contact me by mail if you’re willing to improve the current output. That would indeed benefit the whole ecosystem, given InDesign is quite ubiquitous in publishing, and I’ll be glad to help.

13. QR code without borders

    Generating QR Codes in Indesign is great, but one thing is designwise a hassle: the invisible border of the QR code. It changes also in size when the code is more detailed as before, or less.
    for a designer this normed border is only slightly important – it's more important where the visible part, the code itself starts and ends.. so we can align it visually to our design. Please add this function.

14. The ability to make text invisible or 'replacing' it with '___' using the Character Style

    I recently worked with a publication that needed to hide part of the text in different places. The full text also had to be shown next to it.
    It would be possible to arrange this by means of GREP-styles, if it were possible to use some kind of pseudo font with zero character width or something like.
    Also it would be useful having an opportunity visually replace any symbol with underline (such an idea is often using in a language textbooks) using character styles.

15. Enable easy batching of GREP Find/Change queries & expandable 'entry window'

    Hi there,

    Rather than rely on third-party software (or convoluted scripts), there should be an option to batch GREP queries together in the Find/Change menu.

    Also, it would be nice (for more extensive/complicated GREPs) to be able to expand the window in general (pertaining to both Find/Change's GREP tab and the equivalent menu for GREP styles elsewhere) when entering the expressions.

    As an addendum to that last point, at the very least InDesign should have a built in (expandable) panel for copying and pasting complicated GREP syntax without having to worry about certain syntax items disappearing if copied and pasted elsewhere for review/edit outside of the tiny text window within the current UI. I'm aware of RegExr and it works okay, but this should really be built in (or even better, allow the window to expand as suggested above).

17. Cascading Character Styles

    A bit like CSS.
    e.g. create a Style to make text Red, and a Style to make text Bold.
    These Styles can be applied individually, or both.
    This allows to make text Red OR Bold + Red AND Bold, with only two Styles.

18. Show picture as it is being resized

    In CS5 we could drag the corner of a picture and the picture would change as you pulled down. The new version only changes the frame and you can't see what the picture is doing. We print over 1,000 pictures in our weekly publication and this takes a HUGE amount of extra time to get the picture to the size we need it in the frame.

19. Rule Above/Rule Below dialog

    Please make both Rule Above and Rule Below visible at the same time, rather than toggling between them. Oftentimes, both are used in conjunction with each other. And there's plenty of room to do so. If need be, the Keep in Frame checkbox can be moved up next to the button for rule on/off.

20. Overhaul Bullets and Numbering and add features to make it useful.

    Right now the bullets and numbering features are so limited and feel like an afterthought. Here is what I need in order of importance:

    1. The ability to format bullets/numbers so they ignore extra line spaces.

    2. The ability to align the bullets to the center. When one bullet's verbiage is longer than one line of text the bullet stays on the first line, what I need is for the bullet to be centered with all of the lines of text in that bullet, so if you had a bullet that was three lines long, the bullet would be centered to the middle; or if two lines long, the bullet would be centered in between the two lines.

    3. Give Bullets and Numbering its own window panel. Otherwise I have to hunt it down, google it, etc. Opening paragraph window and then clicking the hamburger icon is not intuitive.

    4. More customization of the bullet symbol. Allow me to easily customize color, size, and spacing from the bullets and numbering panel. Also include more stock shapes and options to choose from that aren't just derived from a font. Allow me to import my own custom shape to use a bullet.

    Right now the bullets and numbering features are so limited and feel like an afterthought. Here is what I need in order of importance:

    1. The ability to format bullets/numbers so they ignore extra line spaces.

    2. The ability to align the bullets to the center. When one bullet's verbiage is longer than one line of text the bullet stays on the first line, what I need is for the bullet to be centered with all of the lines of text in that bullet, so if you had a bullet that was three lines long, the bullet would be centered to the… more
