  1. Placeholder Text Feature

Seeing as InDesign has interactive PDFs in mind giving us the ability to create forms easily and then export them as a PDF to open in Acrobat, I feel like a feature to inset placeholder text to fields shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

To clarify, I was hoping to find an option under the Buttons and Forms toolbox that allows us to check off a box for placeholder text so when someone types in the field the original text there is overwritten with the new content. Like a "W" for width and an "L" for length in field boxes…

  2. Make Color Books available under Window menu, like in Illustrator

I can no longer view Window > Swatch Library > Color Books. This now missing function allowed me to view/choose Pantone and other color books PLUS opened a window with all the swatches at once, just like Illustrator does.
Please reinstate this feature! of viewing the color book swatches arrayed in rows/columns in a scrolling window. See attached screenshot for how it used to look (matches how it works in Illustrator).

  3. Zoom box in Pages Window

I would like to see in CC InDesign the ability to see where you're zoomed in at in your pages window. Also, I'd like to be able to click and hold onto the highlight zoomed in the area on the pages window and move it to update the preview when I let go of the highlighted zoom box.

This would be helpful for us users that create large catalogs and would like to quickly JUMP-TO a portion of a page. With large catalog files, the program can get sluggish/slow. When the user has to scroll through a…

  4. Automatic tables by adding 'Column Space'

This would be a major improvement of tables in InDesign that would be the envy of any other program and I think it is possible for InDesign to do it.
This feature would automatically make a table go to its text box width with even spacing between each column of text.:
This is how it would be done with a new feature called something like 'Column Space':

    (1) You would make sure the table is within a text box to the width you want the table to go to.
    (2) You would then adjust the columns of text within the…

  5. Add an Auto-Page Advance Transition. After a Delay. Page should advance automatically to next pg

To make a presentation 'Auto' play like a movie. This seems like a simple feature to add.

  6. Restart endnote numbering within a single document

I love that endnotes are now a feature, but am finding them to make my job more difficult as they are currently.

I'd love to see a way to restart endnote numbering within a single document--maybe after a certain paragraph style is used or after a section break. With a multi-hundred page document, it looks more clean (both in the text and in the endnotes section) and is more manageable to have lower numbers.

  7. Script Label Manager

We use scripts and script labels on a daily basis! It would be absolutely FANTASTIC to have a window (similar to LINKS) that when opened, displays ALL script labels in the board/file, along with a link to where it is in the page (selects the item that's labelled).

It is extremely tedious to use script labels when there is no way to properly organize and manage them.

Please please make this Script Label Manager a feature!

  8. Option to turn spell check off or skip master pages.

It would be helpful to be able to skip the spell check in master pages without turning the language to [No Language]. As well as make the "Ignore All" or "Add" feature in spell check work better and actually skip common use for your documents.

  9. Adding a separate pages or extract pages as individual pages feature.

Working in a newspaper environment, our layout clerk sets up our paper in sections. If our A Section is 12 pages, she sets it up as a 12 page section and dummies the advertisements on the pages. When our editorial staff grabs the pages to do their jobs, they need to be able to work on each page individually, not as one full document. It would be extremely beneficial (without having to "MOVE PAGES" or copy and paste) if our layout clerk could separate or export the document as individual indesign pages. Our layout and…

  10. Package items included on pasteboard

Basically our agency puts together loads of creative presentations in inDesign.

A great way to do this is having mock-ups on main page, but build an associated inDesign editable graphic and we normally put that to the side so if we need to make changes we can do on fly and get the editable file right which we can then very quickly update a PSD smart object mock-up for example. So we can keep all workings in one ID doc and it is easy to manage.

But if you package work it doesn’t include pasteboard links and I can…

  11. Updating numbers only in a table of contents

We should have two options when it comes to update a table of contents.
    1- Update entire table
    2- Update page numbers only

Word allows it. Why don’t InDesign too?

I’ll be waiting for this change in next update! It’ll change my life!

  12. External link to a specific point of a Publish Online document

Can we get a way to link directly to a text anchor, hyperlink destination, page # etc from an external source?

For example: I'd like to publish product documentation using Publish Online, and it would be nice to be able to link to a page or text anchor from a help document that would take someone to a specific point (i.e. a connection diagram).

  13. Windows within Pages Panel

When working on a long document, you may need to refer back to an earlier page for information or formatting consistency. An easy way to do this would be to allow for the Pages Panel to be subdivided into windows or views of the overall docuement. That way when you are at page 120 and need to look at 80, you could simply get 80 in one window and 120 and its adjacent pages in the other. You would then be able to toggle back and forth without having to scroll all the way up and down through…

  14. We need feature variables

Ideas for expanding the functionality of text variables have already appeared here. It would also be interesting to create variables to describe the properties of non-text objects. For example, color, font size, size (length / width), page position, styles, etc.

The benefit of such an introduction is obvious: you do not need to create many monotonous styles that differ only in one or two common features. It would also indirectly affect the number of master spreads created.

Each property of a certain object represented by a list (for example, color) can be expanded with variables of the corresponding…

  15. Add image sharpening before output

We should be able to apply sharpening (such as "unsharp masking") to images on the InDesign page.
Currently, the only solution is to place an image, scale it to size in InDesign, and then go back to Photoshop to scale it, resample it (change to proper resolution), and then apply appropriate sharpening… and then go update or re-place it in InDesign. It is very inefficient!
I want InDesign to apply global-sharpening to an image at the proper size, when it outputs to PDF or prints.

  16. Change page size not only centered, but for example add 2 cm to the right side only

It would be super handy if the size could be changed at any direction as easily as with the anchors in "Canvas size" in Photoshop. I know it is possible with the Page Tool, but I would love for it to be "in the right place", i.e. in the Page setup window.

  17. Magic Wand Tool

Magic Wand Tool is necessary for InDesign to select not only objects but this should also work according to InDesign to select the same fonts, and Styles of Objects, Paragraphs, Characters, and Tables, etc.
Magic Wand would be beneficial for the Selection of Fonts and their Size and Styles, just we will have to check/turn on the options according to required selections on the page, spread, or document, etc.

  18. Add Space Before on Column Top checkbox

Currently the ‘Space Before’ value is ignored when that paragraph appears on the top of any container—frame/column.

There are innumerable occasions when we need the above space settings to be honoured even when the paragraph appears on the top of the column. We InDesigners resort to various antics and workaround like keeping an ‘Invisible Rule Above’ or use a character style with extra leading etc..

It is very easily solved by a simple checkbox in the Indents and Spacing tab just below ‘Space Before’ selection which says ‘Add Space Before on column top’. If checked, the value will always be…

  19. conditional GREP formatting

We need to add conditional GREP formatting. For eg. in screen 1 (yellow highlighted text) tagged in xml, and are able capture with GREP styling. But when we put condition, it also captures unwanted text in same GREP style (cyan highlighted), tagged with same xml tag. It would be great as conditional text, i.e.. "IF x=y then DO 'this'" OTHERWISE APPLY 'this style'.

If such option available in indesign, it would be a great help as we are doing frontend xml publishing.

  20. Reinstate option to hide Application Bar

This option has been removed in 2020.
Application bar has virtually no functionality, and wastes valuable space on screen
