Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling
Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling.
Define a variable using the text of a specific paragraph style. Add character styles to the text (or use a GREP style) and when the text is
pulled" by the variable the character style is not reflected.Often this is used for running headers and footers. Example: if the registered trademark symbol is added to the text, it is regular case in the variable.
This also really screws up the ToC when the paragraph style is used in a ToC

Preferences > Units & Increments should be application, not document preferences
Under Preferences > Units & Increments, the Keyboard Increments preferences should be application wide, not document specific.
People share documents and templates and have their own way of working. They expect keyboard shortcuts to work consistently. It is unintuitive if in one file point size and leading change in two point increments and in another they change in one point increments. There is no reason for these preferences to be document specific rather than application specific.

Ability to apply several types of footnotes in one story.
Ability to apply several types of footnotes in one thread.
E.g
Numbering with stars for autor footnotes, Arabic numeration for editorial footnotes and numbering footnotes referring to poetry verse numberetc.
Ability to reset numbering after selected paragraph style without having to create a section.

Publish Online should include a print option + spreads with Two-Up Continuous (Cover Page)
Published Online files should include a print option that sizes a page to a printable option. Currently if I upload our publication (a coupon book) to Publish Online and we try to print the page shown on the screen it crops most of the page regardless of the browser used. You can shrink your window and sort of get the desired result, but we don't think most of our readers will know how to do this. Also it would be nice to be able to select a page range of what to print. I know you can include a pdf…

touch bar support
I've been using the touch bar of my MacBook Pro for a lot of things, including Photoshop. As I am mainly using Indesign in my everyday work, it would be great to have touch bar support, for instance for applying paragraph styles to texts.

Index Alphabetising Systems
I'm currently producing a book every Bob Dylan song in it for his publisher. It's a huge project and I'm indexing. I've noticed something very odd with InDesign's indexing system, which is that it's only possible to alphabetise letter-by-letter, so if these were song titles, I'd get this (in this order):
I Dream
I'm Asking
I'm Falling
I WinOf course, what I want is word-by-word indexing, which would give me the (correct) following:
I Dream
I Win
I'm Asking
I'm FallingI know I can tweak these entries manually, and I have done but it's laborious and risky. I…

Allow document to be editable while using "FIND FONT"
Add the ability to edit and interact with the underlying document while the FIND FONT window is open (just like we can do while the regular FIND/CHANGE window is open)
When FIND FONT is open, the ONLY thing we can do is locate/substitute fonts. We aren't able to interact with the document in any other way. Often while using FIND FONT to locate where missing fonts are used, we find that the issue is actually just some text that we forgot to style properly, or a rogue invisible character that should simply be deleted. But in order to accomplish any…

Use Keyboard arrows to go through links list
When I want to check the links in the links menu and I have klicked on one of them, I thought it could be time saving if I could just use the arrows of my keyboard to "scroll up and down" through them. Right now you have to always klick with your mouse on one of them, you can´t use the arrows to go through them.

Accessibility feature requests
First, thank you for your recent new/improved features, including endnotes, improved word wrap, and better object tags in exported pdfs.
As a designer, the following requests are not just desirable, they are necessary in order to make my documents fully meet government 508 requirements:
- Please make word wrap work no matter where on the page a text or graphic frame is anchored. Currently, word wrap only works if the item is positioned after the anchor. *Please allow "space before" to work on the first line in a text frame. *Please change items on master pages so they are active NOT…

Zoom in on a tiny area faster
Used to be able to zoom in on a small area by holding command/space and scrolling over a small area and it would then display that small area without have to drag mouse to get that area to enlarge

Libraries
A really small thing that has tripped me up a more times that I wish to admit is that in Indesign the CC Libraries is called "CC Libraries" however in Photoshop & Illustrator it is just called "Libraries"
If this could become standardised across the Adobe Suite that would be great.

Delete Multiple Index Entries
As it is, if you "add all" with the index tool, it creates an index entry for every instance of the selected word. Sometimes it might have that word 20 times on a page over a range of pages. As it is now, each of these entries over multiple pages must be deleted one-by-one by dragging the number individually into the trash can in the index tool. It would be awesome if you could select multiple entries at once (by using +ctrl or + shift) so you could drag multiple entries into the trash. This would increase my efficiency by…

I hate the "Search is completed" or "Cannot find match" messages after searches
Specifically I hate having to click OK to close the message.
Could the same messages just appear in the search window itself instead of the current alert? Maybe with color to make it obvious?16 votes -
Remove guides, select similar objects on whole document
Need to remove guides and select (edit) similar objects, like container boxes, not only on a spread but on the whole document.

PDF Export improvement
Great news that it is now possible to export multi page file as separate PDFs. However that automatically created (not optional) subfolder is unnecessary.

YAML and JSON
I don't know if this should go into the scripting category.
But could you please extent InDesign's capability or range when it comes to import or process data files, using structured data and Data Merge etc.
From only accepting CSV files to also accept, JSON and YAML

When creating a QR Code in InDesign, Allow User to select VCARD Version
We are having issues with the QR Code generator due to its 2.1 version of the VCARD. Not all readers and phones interpret that correctly, resulting in parsing errors depending on the scanner software used. It would be useful to allow the user to select which VCARD standard they want to use, such as VCARD 2.1, 3.0, 4.0, etc. This will create the metadata to be compatible with more current versions of scanning software. Not sure if version 2.1 is deprecated, but it's not always supported anymore (e.g. RedLaser, etc) causing parsing issues on the address line with iOS as…
