Hi,
We are aware of one scenario where the issue is reproducible. The workaround resolves the known scenario as stated below:
- Open the document in InDesign 19.5.
- Export it to IDML.
- Open the IDML in InDesign 20.0.
Please share the document with us at sharewithID@adobe.com.

An error occurred while saving the comment Rachael C commentedOn a Mac system, there are also reports that this can happen if a font that is activated on creative cloud is also installed locally on your OS.
Check your Mac / fonts folder to see if you have the same font that is attempting to sync in the background. Reportedly, deleting the local font file addresses the problem. Just check to make sure it's not a system required font first.

An error occurred while saving the comment Rachael C commentedI'm going to rudely piggyback on this to add that an option to disable background exports is very much needed. All of our files export to PDF in the foreground without a problem, but exporting the same file in the background crashes the program completely.
We've had to work around this problem for years, but the DisableAsyncExports workaround no longer works in InDesign 2025.

An error occurred while saving the comment Rachael C commentedThe DisableAsyncExports workaround does not appear to work in InDesign 2025, but continues to work in InDesign 2024.
The .jsx scripting option to disable background exports that was initially documented in this article stopped working a few versions ago as well. https://creativepro.com/a-new-workaround-for-that-pesky-background-export-issue/.
That article was from 2011. That's how long users have been working around this problem, Adobe. The background export is seriously flawed when it comes to large files with a lot of links. The foreground export works just fine with the SAME file, so it's not our files--it's the background export process.
Please fix this!!

An error occurred while saving the comment Rachael C commentedPerhaps this is related to a missing font issue I'm currently having with Museo Sans Rounded, a font that has been activated and used from Creative Cloud for years. This font is now showing up as missing, and the font name has changed to include (OTF) at the end.
I have screenshots of the font info for the missing font, as well as the information after I update the font once again from Adobe fonts.

InDesign TeamAn error occurred while saving the comment Rachael C commentedBeware though, InDesign 14 still crashes on long document background task exports (as it did in v13), and the disablebackgrounexport.jsx workaround that worked in InDesign 13 appears to not function in 14.

Thanks for reporting the issue.
How are you adding the Endnote text to the frame? Are you copying text and pasting it? If so, have you tried using ‘Paste without formatting’?
