Interesting: I could replicate this. I'm not sure what is causing it, however you'll notice that when you make a new text frame it automatically takes on the "Basic Text Frame" object style with a "+" to show it's changed.

If you create a text frame in your document, make it two columns and then copy and paste it into a new document, the two column setting is lost. However, before you copy it, click "None" for object style, then copy and paste it: it then works. So if select all the text frames in your document and set them to have no object style, the problem might go away.

My guess is that something in the object styles in your original document is corrupt, or there's a setting I'm not familiar with that's coming across.

Another fix I just tried is saving your document as an idml file then opening again in InDesign. When I did this I could copy and paste a two-column text frame with no problem.

I think it's important to have it as part of the paragraph panel as well, because there's always an exception. Although you may want it in most places, occasionally there will be an instance where for whatever reason you want to add or remove spacing, and if it's part of the style but not able to be overridden you'd have to remove the paragraph style in order to be able to adjust the spacing before/after. If your style was bullets (which is where I always use this option in Word) that would be a real pain! You would probably have to have two sets of bullet styles again, which is what this is supposed to solve.

I was going to post something but just wanted to check your idea is the same as mine. Say your table header row is "Level 1" and coloured dark blue. You then have Level 2 subheading rows that occur often throughout a table, and are coloured a pale blue. When you go to page 2 of the table, you want it to start with the dark blue Level 1 as usual, and then repeat the last-used pale blue Level 2 row?

I often have tables that go on for pages at a time and although I need the main table header to show what each column is, I want the Level 2 rows to repeat so that the rows are in context (showing what grouping they belong to, which is the function of the pale blue rows).

At the moment I have to manually insert the pale blue row at the top of the next page, and if I add or delete rows before it, it ends up in the wrong position as it's not "locked" to the top of the page.

This thread is asking for the same functionality, I believe, so that would bring the votes up to 30!

There are actually a few ideas about this in the system but they are all worded differently. I for one would word this "Allow table rows to break across frames". Assuming I have understood the intent of this idea, of course. Perhaps they could all be consolidated?

This is very true. With all the new features InDesign has added over the years, the basic (and very useful) functionality of tables in InDesign hasn't really changed from its initial implementation back in what, 1999?. Not being able to split a row across frames is such a huge impediment to layout, and makes Word superior for table-heavy documents, sad to say.

I was doing some diagrams showing a rail line that had bridges over it. The bridges are shown as two parallel lines with white in the middle to cover the rail line. The ends of the bridge need to remain open, so no line. The only way of doing this at the moment is as a single cell table with borders on the left and right (which is what I used) or by drawing two lines and a white box and grouping them (not ideal). I'd post a screenshot but I can't see an option anywhere.

Yes! F4 is one of the most useful things in Word. Much of what I do in InDesign is one-off, so while I might use styles, I won't necessarily have shortcut keys set up for them. For a large amount of styles this would be impractical anyway. In Word I tend to go through and apply a style at a time: apply body, then click-F4-click-F4-click-F4 all the way to the end. Then back to the top, apply Bullet 1-F4-click-F4 etc. Very fast!

I have assigned F4 to "Transform Sequence Again Individually" for when I am doing org charts, as you can change the size of a box then change others to match. It would be good if this "transform again" functionality could be extended further to styles, manual text formatting, etc.
