Proportional Scaling Using Shift Button Not Working
In the 2017.1 release of InDesign, the ability to hold Shift and scale objects proportionally seems to have disappeared. I know for me this is a major functionality problem that is increasing the time I have to spend on current projects. I've checked support forums and others are encountering this problem, but I haven't yet seen a solution.

Thank you for your patience all this while; we really appreciate your support!
Our investigation suggests that one of common reasons for the problem is that certain software (mostly antivirus and other security applications) and browser extensions happen to enable “Secure Keyboard Entry” on Mac machines due to which some keys such as Shift key in this case do not perform the desired action in InDesign.
For now I request you to follow the below provided KB doc for the quick workaround of the problem.

In the comments section many of the users have confirmed that disabling Webroot SecureAnywhere (a security app) has resolved the issue for them. Please note that, the problem may not be related to a particular software; there could be a different application or antivirus which might be causing the problem by enabling Secure Keyboard Entry on Mac.

The above solution did not work for me - there is no Webroot anywhere.

Please help. Adobe this problem is driving me crazy. I have search all across the internet and tried all the known fixes (delete prefs, remove Wacom prefs, remove WebRoot, closing Safari, restart, etc.) and none of them have worked.
This problem seems to have been going on out in the community for year and the solution seems to keep changing.
I'm using InDesign 15.0.1 on a mac running Catalina.

Every week there is a new issue I have with CC. Paying a lot of money to have to constantly reset preferences is frustrating. when the program used to work great.

I've been experiencing this issue aswell. I've tried everything that was recommended on this forum, and its still not working. I just updated my indesign, and that still didn't fix the problem. Does anyone have other tips as to what I can try, this is very inconvenient for work flow.

I suddenly was seeing the "Space Bar Won't enable Hand Tool" problem that's been a plague for years. A few weeks ago, I installed AdGuard for Safari and Mac. I've been happy with it's ad blocking - but this was the culprit for the problem of the Space Bar not invoking the Hand Too, AND for Command+Space not invoking zoom. I've turned off the helpful ad blocker, and I can use my Adobe Apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign were all affected).
After all these years, PLEASE fix these apps so that our computers can remain usable and safe while still having access to these important tools! -

The keyboard shortcut for scaling in InDesign CC stopped working for me. After much frustration and experimentation, I figured out that if I close all programs and relaunch InDesign FIRST, the issue is resolved. Works every time for me.

I recently re-installed Webroot and had this problem occur. Just pressing "Pause Secure Keyboard Entry" form the Webroot app menu fixed it immediately. Thank you for the tip.

This problem has been driving me crazy! It's the most basic key function that causes so much headache when it doesn't work! I have just followed the suggestions below and quit chrome and safari and it works. This bug really needs to be fixed.

Proportional scaling, duplicating, moving objects works for a while after restarting my Mac in ID 2020. but then mysteriously stops working. Not sure what is triggering it. I need the shift+mouse shortcuts!
Same for ID 2019.
Update 12/13: For those of you on Macs, I reset the PRAM a few times, and it seems to have fixed the issue, temporarily. I'm back in business! :) Not sure what the Windows equivalent would be.

I've got the same problems described below. I reinstalled InDesign 2019 and now it has got the same bugs. I don't even use Safari, only Chrome. I tried closing every other programme but nothing helped. I can't work like that, pleaaase fix it fast!

As I'm seeing from the most recent comments, this bug has reappeared in InDesign 2020. The keyboard shortcut Cmnd+Shift+drag doesn't scale objects proportionally and Option+drag doesn't duplicate objects. I quit Safari but still no change. This only happens on a Mac for me. I tried InDesign 2020 on a Windows PC and didn't encounter the problem. The shortcuts are working in Illustrator 2020 though. I checked Terminal on the Mac and confirmed that I don't have Secure Keyboard Entry activated either. Please help!

shift + Mouse drag … dos not scale proportionally any more!
alt + shift + Mouse drag … does not duplicate any more!
cmd + shift + Mouse resize is not proportionally any more and content of frame does not scale!these functions are critical!
even in older versions of indesign this does not work anymore since the update to 2020 …… how can i fix this?

I updated to Indesign 2020 … now: Proportional Scaling Using Shift+Mouse does not work. Duplicating using Alt+Shift+Mouse does not work. Moving objects in same Line using Shift+Mouse does not work.
These are critical features – why won't they work anymore?
Even in Indesign 2019 they don't work anymore since the update …
