1. [ID-4275284][Windows][KB5074109][KB5073724]InDesign encounters Error 2 while saving files or crashes during the save process

   Abruptly files that have been edited on a Mac are corrupting when opened on PC and a save is attempted - often crashing InDesign repeatedly. Can normally eventually save a copy to 'Downloads' - rather than the shared Dropbox folder and then overwrite but tends to take several restarts and recovery attemps / saving as idml. Gives a variety of error messages - sometimes error 2, sometimes unable to do this process, some times tried to save but couldn't... any ideas?!

   Steps
   - Create a new file in InDesign.
   - Save the file (locally or on a network).
   - Reopen the file, make edits, and attempt to save it again.

   Result:
   - Error 2 is displayed.
   - In some cases, InDesign crashes.

   Uninstall the latest Microsoft update released on 13 January 2026

   For enterprise environments, one available approach is to implement a Group Policy Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for the January update KB KB5073724 (Windows 10) or KB5074109 (Windows 11)

   Save the document to the local drive and then copy it to the cloud-synced locations, such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc

   We are closely monitoring the KB previously shared by Microsoft for Windows 10 | Windows 11, and we see that the issue status is marked as resolved (Resolved: 23 Jan 2026, 14:00 PT).

   • Windows 11 - Resolution: This issue is resolved in the out-of-band (OOB) update released on January 24, 2026, (KB5078127), and updates released after this date.
   • Windows 10 - Resolution: This issue is resolved in the out-of-band (OOB) update KB5078129, released on January 24, 2026, and available via the Microsoft Update Catalog, as well as in updates released after this date.

   We have validated the fix on Windows 11 and are seeing the issue resolved. Kindly install the latest update and confirm whether it resolves the issue for you.

2. InDesign 21.4.1 buffering indefinitely after a few edits and won't save (Windows 11)

   I can make a few changes in non-corrupted files which are fine, but then I get the spinning wheel forever. My cursor still moves and can click things, but I can't undo (ctrl+z) or save. Then the app won't close, it has to be force closed through Task Manager. I have closed and reopened the app, checked for updates, updated restarted my computer, tried other files, nothing works. My other apps work fine and I have no other issues with buffering or freezing.

3. Bug report (regression) — InDesign 2026: Fixed-Layout EPUB export freezes (Error -29) on a large image + a vector shape

   • Adobe InDesign 2026, version 21.0.0.192
   • macOS (Darwin 25.5)
   • Regression: the same document exports correctly in InDesign 2025 and earlier.

   Summary

   Exporting a page to Fixed-Layout EPUB fails with an uncatchable Error -29 "Uncaught exception" when
   the page contains a large placed raster image together with a vector shape from an
   Illustrator-style drawn illustration. The minimal reproducer is just two objects: one large image
   plus any single one of those illustration shapes (even a simple 4-point polygon). Removing the image,
   or removing the vector shape, makes it export. The error aborts the scripting engine (not catchable with
   try/catch); from a panel, the export call never returns.

   Steps to reproduce

   1. Open min_test.indd (one page: a large image + one vector shape). Or build it: place a large image (~5300×7900 px) on a page and add a vector shape that came from a drawn/imported illustration.
   2. Export to Fixed-Layout EPUB (File > Export… → EPUB (Fixed Layout), or doc.exportFile(ExportFormat.FIXED_LAYOUT_EPUB, file, false)).

   Expected result

   The EPUB is produced, as in InDesign 2025 and earlier.

   Actual result

   Export fails with Error Number: -29, "Uncaught exception."

   What was ruled out (controlled, single-variable tests)

   • The image: any large image works (56 MP alone exports fine); the specific file/metadata is irrelevant (pixel data byte-identical, metadata kept or stripped — still fine alone).
   • Cumulative load: 8 images totalling 133 MP, or a big image + up to 400 generated shapes, export fine.
   • Transparency, strokes, compound paths, bezier curves, rich-CMYK fills: a big image + generated shapes carrying any/all of these export fine (9 separate fabrication attempts).
   • Document context / page count / fonts: the page reproduces it alone as a one-page document with the document fonts substituted; other pages and text are not involved.
   • Shape complexity / count: a single simple real shape reproduces it just as a complex one does.

   => The trigger is the large image + a single real vector shape whose internal path representation
   (from an Illustrator-style illustration) cannot be reproduced by scripted/generated geometry. It is
   not size, color, transparency, complexity, count, fonts, or document context.

   Reproducer

   min_test.indd (attached) — a one-page document with a large image + one real vector shape — reproduces
   on export. Package it (File > Package) so the linked image travels.

   Workaround

   Downsample the placed image (changes the image enough to clear the export), or remove/relocate the
   vector illustration from the page.

4. Image placing issue

   Hi,

   Whenever I place two or three images, the software becomes unresponsive and gets stuck. I have to force-close the application and restart it to continue working.

5. InDesign v21.4 crashing every 5 minutes

   Since my update to v21.4 today, InDesign 2026 has been crashing on me every 5 minutes - once was under a minute of opening, while I was reading about a missing font.

6. UNDO doesn't work and/with cursor issue

   Several times a day, at random, my cursor suddenly gets stuck on a tool (while remaining usable). Then UNDO stops working. At that point I can save my document and close it, but I'm forced to quit InDesign via Task Manager and restart it for things to work again.

   I updated to version 21.5.1 yesterday, but the problem persists.

7. [ID-4276616][Win]InDesign 21.x does not launch after Windows update due to corrupt VCRuntime

   Indesign and some other products are failing to open, and it all related to the Microsoft C++ Redistributable, we just have to repair it and it starts working again.
   Please work with Microsoft on the issue, something is happening that is making it very very hard to manage and work with InDesign because of the problem. I think it is happening with other Adobe products too

   Impact

   Cumulative update appears to be removing the msvcp140.dll, vcruntime140.dll and vcruntime140_1.dll from the C:\Windows\System32 directory

   Investigations currently by Microsoft

   The investigation is currently ongoing with both the Microsoft VC++ team and the MSI development team. Current findings indicate multiple contributing factors behind the reported VC runtime corruption and installation issues.

   Details requested by Microsoft to be collected by customer

   Capture additional logging via the [Introduction to TroubleShootingScript toolset (TSS) - Windows Client | Microsoft ( https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/windows-tss/introduction-to-troubleshootingscript-toolset-tss), to generate a DND_SetupReport and share it with sharewithID@adobe.com

   • Download and unzip toolset from:  https://aka.ms/getTSS
   • Launch an elevated Powershell prompt
   • Run the following to ensure the script can be executed: Set-ExecutionPolicy -scope Process -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Force
   • Capture the installation data by running the tss script as follows: .\TSS.ps1 -Collectlog DND_SetupReport
   • Zip the resulting C:\MS_DATA folder containing the files, and upload to the File Transfer site.

8. spinning wheel effing up programme v21.3

   This just started randomly happening in the middle of a working day and now won't go away.

   The spinning wheel appears when working on a file (normally placing images). I can close the job, but I cannot save (unless I "save as" again), cannot undo anything, and other menu items are greyed out as well. The programme won't close, and I have to force quit. Making it impossible to get through a job.

   No background tasks are appearing.

   I have had two remote sessions with Adobe agents, and both times they did something different that was supposed to "fix" the problem. Still having the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

   1st fix (completely uninstalled everything Adobe related on my computer and reinstalled everything. All preferences and saved settings removed. DIDN'T WORK

   2nd fix - updating graphics card that was out of date. Worked for the rest of the day and then started the following day again.
   The jobs are not large, and the graphics are not complex.

   ADOBE FIX YOUR PROGRAMMES PROPERLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10. Pointer disappears / shows unrelated shape after ~10–15 min of use — requires force quit

    Environment:
    InDesign 21.5.1
    macOS Tahoe 26.6.2
    Mac Studio, Apple M1 Max

    Description:
    After roughly 10–15 minutes of normal use, the pointer stops behaving correctly. No specific action seems to trigger it — it just starts happening during regular work. The pointer either disappears completely or displays a random shape unrelated to the current tool or action. Once this occurs, InDesign becomes unresponsive and the only way to recover is to force quit and relaunch the app.

    Steps to reproduce:

    Open InDesign and work as usual.
    Continue working for approximately 10–15 minutes (no specific trigger identified).
    Observe the pointer.

    Expected behavior: Pointer reflects the active tool/action as normal.

    Actual behavior: Pointer disappears or shows a random, unrelated shape. InDesign then stops responding and must be force quit.

    Workaround: None. Force quit and restart InDesign to restore normal function.

    Thank you for contacting us and bringing the issue in the latest release of Adobe InDesign to our attention. We sincerely regret the inconvenience this has caused and fully understand how disruptive such interruptions can be to your workflow.

    Our preliminary analysis indicates that this issue may be an isolated scenario. We have identified a workaround that can help resolve the issue.

    Please rename the following folders:

    – Rename the CEP folder to CEP.old from:

    • macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe

    • Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe

    If that doesn't help, rename the UXP folder to UXP.old from:

    • macOS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe and ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe

    • Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe and C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe

    Once done, relaunch InDesign and check again.

12. Color Picker eyedropper freezes UI — invisible modal dialog blocks all interaction and saving

       Adobe InDesign 21.4.1 / 2026 — macOS Tahoe 26.5.1, Apple Silicon M1 Max

    2. Steps to reproduce:
       Select an object with a fill color.
       Double-click the Fill color swatch in the Tools panel to open the Color Picker dialog.
       Try to sample a color from the document using the eyedropper inside the Color Picker.
       Nothing happens (the eyedropper does not pick up any color).
       Close the Color Picker dialog.

    3. Expected result:
       The eyedropper samples the color under the cursor and applies it. After closing the dialog, the UI is fully responsive again.

    4. Actual result:
       After closing the Color Picker, InDesign becomes unresponsive to all commands. Some UI elements are clickable but no action executes — menu items are greyed out or only trigger a warning beep. Menu commands (Save, Window > Arrange, etc.) do not respond. Attempting to quit triggers the warning "Die Anforderung kann nicht bearbeitet werden, da ein modales Dialogfeld oder eine modale Warnmeldung aktiv ist." ("The request cannot be processed because a modal dialog or modal alert is active."), but no such dialog is visible anywhere on screen or on any connected display. It appears an invisible modal dialog remains active and locks the whole application, blocking even saving.

    Workaround found: The document tabs remain clickable — clicking the tab's close (×) triggers the normal "save changes?" prompt, which allows saving the file before force-quitting. Without this, all unsaved progress would be lost.

14. Adobe InDesign Freezes and Does Not Close

    Adobe InDesign frequently freezes while I am working. The application becomes completely unresponsive, and the mouse pointer changes to the blue spinning loading cursor. I cannot close the program normally and have to force it to close using Task Manager.

    This issue interrupts my work and may cause unsaved changes to be lost. Please investigate the cause and provide a solution.

15. Drag/Drop Link Causes Loading (Spinny) Wheel - Must Force Quit InDesign and Restart on Windows

    Occasionally, mostly when placing photos of PDF's via drag/drop, and at other random times, InDesign will be stuck, and the mouse cursor will be stuck on the loading/spinning wheel. I will have to open the Task Manager, force quit InDesign, and re-open. When I re-open, it will typically load the document exactly where I left off. Sometimes it's saved my work and other times it had not.

    Problem description

    InDesign repeatedly enters a save-locked state during ordinary editing on the macOS 27 beta.

    After several successful saves, an open and modified .indd document suddenly can no longer be saved. The document tab continues to display the modified-document asterisk, but the following commands are disabled:

    • Save
    • Save As
    • Save a Copy
    • Revert

    Closing the document is also unavailable or unsuccessful.

    When quitting InDesign, the application reports:

    InDesign cannot quit because one or more tasks are running in the background.

    The Window → Utilities → Background Tasks panel is empty. There is no task to cancel, no progress indicator, and no visible alert explaining the failure.

    Waiting does not restore saving. InDesign must eventually be force-quit, creating a substantial risk of losing work.

    Expected behavior

    A modified document should permit Save or Save As.

    If a save or other background task is active, InDesign should:

    • Show it in the Background Tasks panel.
    • Complete it or return an actionable error.
    • Re-enable document commands after completion or failure.
    • Allow the user to cancel the operation where supported.
    • Never remain permanently locked with unsaved changes and no recovery path.

    Actual behavior

    • InDesign recognizes the document as modified.
    • All native save commands are disabled.
    • The Background Tasks panel is empty.
    • The application incorrectly claims that a background task prevents quitting.
    • No recovery occurs.
    • Force Quit is required.
    • The only consistently successful rescue method has been IDML export followed by reopening and resaving the document.
    • The failure later recurs.

    Steps to reproduce

    1. Run InDesign on macOS 27 beta.
    2. Open an ordinary .indd file.
    3. Make text or layout changes.
    4. Save normally.
    5. Continue editing and saving several times.
    6. At an unpredictable point, make another edit.
    7. Observe the asterisk in the document tab.
    8. Open the File menu.
    9. Observe that Save, Save As and Save a Copy are disabled.
    10. Attempt to quit InDesign.
    11. Observe the warning that background tasks are running.
    12. Open the Background Tasks panel.
    13. Observe that it is empty.

    Frequency and scope

    The failure occurs frequently and has been observed:

    • In multiple documents.
    • In multiple InDesign versions.
    • With documents belonging to an .indb Book.
    • With individual documents opened without relying on a cloud or network path.
    • After IDML reconstruction.
    • In relatively lightweight files.
    • Without third-party plug-ins.

    It may affect more than one open document during the same InDesign session.

    Troubleshooting performed

    The following have already been tested without resolving the issue:

    • Deleted/reset InDesign preferences.
    • Moved files to the local Desktop/internal SSD.
    • Disabled Preflight.
    • Confirmed the Background Tasks panel is empty.
    • Exported files to IDML and recreated .indd files.
    • Tested multiple InDesign files.
    • Tested multiple InDesign versions.
    • Confirmed no third-party plug-ins are installed.
    • Confirmed the documents are relatively light.
    • Tested outside cloud/network storage.

    Book-file context

    Several affected documents are components of an InDesign Book (.indb). However:

    • The component files are independent native .indd files.
    • The issue affects multiple files.
    • Rebuilding the component documents through IDML does not permanently resolve it.
    • The same behavior appears in more than one InDesign release.

    The .indb context may be a trigger, particularly if numbering, synchronization or other book operations invoke an internal asynchronous task, but the visible Background Tasks queue remains empty.

    Technical interpretation

    The UI state suggests that InDesign internally believes a save or asynchronous operation is still active:

    • The document dirty flag remains set.
    • Save commands are disabled.
    • Quit is blocked.
    • No task is exposed in Background Tasks.
    • No error is returned to the user.

    This could involve:

    • A leaked or unresolved background-task state.
    • A save-operation flag that is never cleared.
    • File coordination or atomic-save behavior under the macOS beta.
    • An AppKit menu-validation incompatibility.
    • A document/book synchronization callback that never completes.
    • A macOS 27 compatibility regression affecting several InDesign releases.

    Because it reproduces across InDesign versions on the same beta operating system, macOS is likely an important factor. Nevertheless, InDesign should fail safely and provide a recoverable error rather than disabling every save mechanism.

    Production impact

    This is a critical data-integrity problem.

    Users may unknowingly continue working while the application is already incapable of saving. There is no warning when the failure state begins. The problem becomes visible only when the user attempts a save or quit.

    Force Quit can discard all work since the last successful save. IDML export is only an emergency workaround and is not an acceptable replacement for reliable .indd saving.

    Ich kann keine Dokumente mehr bearbeiten. Der Curser der Maus dreht immer blau im Kreis. Ich kann keine Texte mehr abändern. Habe InDesign Version 21.5.1. Es geht so seit 2 Wochen, habe ganze Installation deinstalliert und jetzt wieder installiert. Es nützt nichts.

    When attempting to open a document in Adobe InDesign, the loading progress bar reaches roughly 50% and then the application either freezes completely or crashes without showing an error message.

20. Stops working after 10-15 minutes

    Version 21.5.1
    When using InDesign after about 10-15 minutes, I can still see my file but I cannot do anything: I can't change anything, can't add anything, it's completely frozen. The pointer still works and can move about the page. I can click on buttons but the drop down menus don't come down, and I cannot close the file even with shortcuts or close down InDesign. I have to End Task in order for it to close down. This continues to happen repeatedly.

    Expected Result: InDesign should not be hanging up and forcing me to Force Quit in order to try to hobble along.

    Actual Result: InDesign is hanging up after 10-15 minutes where I cannot proceed to do anything in the software.
