1. Add Search Function in the Button and Forms Action

   In the Button and Forms Action add Search Function for pdf. This would be very helpful for multi page interactive pdfs, eliminating the manual addition of a search button, which gets overwritten after every new export out of InDesign.

2. Paragraph shading (and borders) should be able to clip/inset based on the text box

   Paragraph shading extends outside of the text box. This is especially annoying when shaded text spans over multiple pages (see screenshot: AutoShading.png). It would be great if it could automatically clip and inset based on the text box—see screenshot: HowItShouldLook.png. The current solutions I can think of are really messy and easily negated.

3. Add Ligature on/off button to the available space for the character type panel

   Due to the recent update (June 2025), there is now an open space for another button on the character style in the Control Panel. The design with the additional space is throwing me off when clicking on Superscript. Adding a button for turning Ligatures on and off would absolutely make life easier. Right now you can turn on/off in character and paragraph style panels, or you have to go to the drop down Menu in the Character panel.

4. Adjust pagenumbers if sheets are hidden

   It's a great feature to be able to hide sheets. But, if we do so, the automatic pagenumbers should adjust to the shown pages, not counting the hidden pages as well.

5. Master Pages need to have one more control

   Designing a brochure, at times i need the footer and header design etc. Master page is a huge tool was a huge help but i think it need one more feature. Master page should have the power to bring forward or entirely back of any design in layer.

   Let InDesign remember the last chosen size of the app window on screen.
   Like many people I work on a very large screen, and I have to refit the extend of the window every time I start InDesign. I think the problem is the same across most of your apps. Windows 10 btw.

7. Tags - Improve UX and UI for using Standard PDF Tags

   Make the Standard PDF Tags available for quick, one-click import into the InDesign Tags Panel from the Tag Panel Menu. The UX/UI could be similar to importing common color libraries (e.g., Pantone Coated) into Illustrator Color Panel.

   By "Standard PDF Tags" I mean https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/editing-document-structure-content-tags.html#standard_pdf_tags

   Basically any UI that is quicker than manually adding all the Standard PDF Tags, exporting to XML, and then in the future having to remember where they are saved and importing. Also helpful when user frequently changes computers, temporarily doesn't have access to a shared network drive, etc.

   Bonus Points

   • Color Grouping: Preset the Standard PDF Tag colors to visually hint at relationships between tags.
   • Logical Grouping: Group related Tags (e.g., Note and Reference; or Figure, Image and Caption) instead of alphabetical sorting Tags Panel.
   • Nest Tags in the Tag panel to reinforce how Tags should be used together.

   PS--The InDesign workflow, tools, and documentation for making accessible PDFs has improved so much over the last 10 years. Thank You!

8. Please make it possible to reorder the parent pages.

   Simply have a option to drag and drop the parent pages. I think this used to be easy when they were master pages , or maybe I just assumed this - but not now.

9. Utilize paragraph shading for text messages with improved functionality

   The new paragraph shading feature would be fantastic to use for laying out text message conversations in books/long from documents, but needs a few tweaks to make is fully functional. Text messages in books is becoming very common and having them run in the text while paging is crucial.

   It used to be that you had to create shapes and anchor each in for a text message. Now you can use Paragraph Shading defined in the style for left side texts with no adjustments, but because right side text messages need to have the "bubble" shape aligned right, but the interior text left aligned. My solution is (see sample file):
   Create three base paragraph styles:
   1. <left_side_text>: Defined: All text styling, paragraph shading set to Text, right/left indents, alignments, and space above/below, etc.
   2. <right_side_text>: Defined: Based on <left_side_text>, but remove left/right indents
   3. <right_side_text_align>: Defined: Based on <right_side_text>, but change to align flush right, add right indent (if needed), turn off paragraph shading.

   Next steps:
   1. Cut out all the <right_side_text> and create a standalone text frame for each text message.
   2. Create (or leave) empty returns where each right side text was and apply <right_side_text_align> to the return.
   3. Paste the text frames into the empty returns where appropriate to anchor frame.
   4. Select each frame and apply the Object style (Text Message Right in sample file).

   Could there be a way to separately control the shading alignment from the interior text alignment within the paragraph style? Much like how text functions within a div?

10. Restart footnote numbering flexibility

    Currently, regardless of whether the "Restart Numbering Every: ...." checkbox does nothing to force footnotes to continue across multiple, unthreaded frames. I would have thought that if you didn't tell it to restart, it would not and would continue to increment each time if found a footnote - but that is not the case. We have various footnote scenarios based on our different clients:

    For some, they want the footnotes numbered consecutively throughout their report. Others want it restarted with every major section. But these reports are complicated - hundreds of pages - and it is very inconvenient to thread every frame in order to have the footnotes be consecutive, because we don't want major sections to reflow/change the layout if there is a change to a completely different section much earlier in the report.

    So this request is to give the user greater flexibility with the numbering of footnotes:

    1. Allow for Continuous footnotes across all pages even if frames are not threaded (program would simply look at what the last footnote number was an increment).

    2. Allow user to click directly on a footnote and tell InDesign what number that footnote should be - similar to the way you can with a numbered list item where you can open the "Bullets and Numbering" dialog box and tell it to restart or tell it what number to start from).

    Ways of making things look like footnotes will not help us because they don't translate as Notes when exporting a tagged PDF. So we need a way to use footnotes but the flexibility we have with a numbered list. Thank you

11. Make Indesign UI bigger

    People have been complaining for years about Indesign's hard to see UI and the inability to make adequate changes. Why is it 2020, and this issue is still unresolved? I shouldn't have to change my Windows UI to make it better, which by the way it doesn't. Attached pic of my display at the recommend UI setting of 250% on a 15 inch screen.

12. Swatch Grouping

    The Color Group function is really useful, but it only works in the creation phase if you select multiple colours. There's no obvious way to add a colour to a group after it's been created - there's no contextual menu option, there's no palette menu option, and seemingly, you can't drag and drop it into the folder, which is counterintuitive as this is something users do all the time with Layers. Similarly, color groups should function the same way inside the CC Libraries palette. There should be a shortcut to add any selected Swatch or Color Group to the current Library, with a warning if duplicates already exist (based on color value, not name); with option to keep separate swatches or replace with new one.

13. Justify: Text Automatically Resizes

    Especially for headlines, I often will manually resize whole lines of text to fill the same width. I use this technique so much that I'd like an option to do it automatically.

    This feature is actually offered on Instagram stories, albeit imperfectly (I've attached a screenshot). You can adjust the line breaks by changing the text size or adding the breaks manually.

15. Automatically update the preview in the index panel

    Currently, when users make a change to an index entry the result page range listing is not automatically. Users have to select Update Preview from the Index panel. Why not make the index list automatically update whenever a change is made?

19. Option: make subsection headers not persist beyond their ends.

    For text variables for running headers/footers, the default behavior is as described in the help: "If there is no occurrence of the style on the page, the previous occurrence of the applied style is used." Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but if you are using headers or footers for both sections and subsections, and some sections have subsections and some don't, then you get a header with the name of a subsection many pages back, even though it's not on the page. Having an option to turn off this persistence would make this feature work much better. I've finally had to give up on subsection headers as they just don't work.

20. bookmark zoom level

    It would be a lifesaver to be able to set the bookmark zoom level in InDesign (whatever it defaults to now, "Fit Page", I think, isn't great for everyone), so that when it exports to PDF you can already have it set to "Inherit Zoom" (or whatever you need) rather than having to manually figure out a way to do it in Acrobat. When you edit the bookmark zoom level in Acrobat, there's not even a way to do it from the InDesign action that's there--you have to basically create a whole new bookmark, redirect it and then set the zoom level, which is a real pain when you get into really long documents.
