  1. Radically improve indexing efficiency

This is a general suggestion. Indexing is one of the most tedious, time-consuming processes in ID. Look for ways to make it more efficient. Here are some suggestions.

    1. When a user selects text for indexing, automatically look up that text in the index listing and display those that match. Often the text with say "John Smith" but his name is in the index as" John H. Smith." When a user selects text with "Smith" in it, have a window that displays all entries with "Smith," allowing the proper one to be selected.

    2. Clicking to open lists under first letters is…

  2. Allow upload of separate PDF

It would be nice if we could choose the PDF to be available for users to download. Sometimes interactivity creates pages that don't look good in PDFs. Sometimes companies simply have different PDFs they'd like to be downloaded.

  3. Synchronize footnote settings in books and number across document

Regarding using books and footnotes: I really, really wish the footnote settings were something you could synchronize when synching your book. Also, I wish there was an option to continue numbering throughout the individual documents. Currently, if you do not have your whole document threaded, it will restart the footnote numbering, so I have to set it to restart numbering at each page (or section).
I frequently have books with a dozen different chapters and would like the footnotes to number sequentially within each chapter; and it would be one less thing to remember to edit if the document footnote…

  4. Ability to turn on/off Effects by checking box

Often times when using a preloaded Effect, such as drop shadow, gradient, etc., after creating you realize you don't like it or want to see what it looked like without the effect.

Rather than having to click back into the options panel to turn off the effect, it would be nice to be able to click the check mark and turn it off or on without going into the options menu.

  6. Table of content – Styling improvement

    1) Please make the TOC dialogue box scaleable: especially the include paragraph styles box is unmanageable (long names are not visible and after applying settings to a style it scrolls back to the top of the list)
    2) Please include option to strip or override character styles in TOC
At the moment you need a lot of paragraph styles to set up the TOC, especially when having multicoloured headlines, both in document and TOC
    3) Please give text boxes an option "include in TOC" (helpful when having the same headline on several pages) and the option to enter alternate…

  7. Embed file option while placing the image in the page

Many-a-times after placing a Image, we need to Embed that as we don't want that to stay connected to the source.
That's why what we want is that before placing a Image, there should be a Link/Embed Option as there is in Illustrator so that I do not have to manually go to Links Panel and Embed it from there for every single Image. It will faster the work process

  8. Data merge should include a "Next Record" feature

Data merge should include a "Next Record" feature, like Word has. I want to merge data into InDesign, but I don't want to duplicate text boxes or pages. I just want to put the placeholders wherever they need to go (like in a table) and merge the data without having a text box for every record.

  9. Publish Online Nav Bar - can this be adjustable on upload via dialogue box?

Adobe have just made the Nav Bar fatter - this instantly trashes the web apps my company have created and sold to clients, because it obscures part of the lower menu. If Adobe wish to fiddle with this, can they not put the control of the Nav Bar in the hands of the creators that provide their solution, and not keep messing with it, as they did earlier in the year by sticking a margin all the way round the document page within the Publish Online interface

  10. Hidden pages alert

PLEASE add an alert on a PDF export if pages are hidden. For many projects, we cannot risk have pages hidden in the final PDF (i.e., proposals).

  12. Option to group and\or collapse pages

We should be able to group pages and collapse them, for a cleaner more organized flow.

My use case - I'm working on a book (not using the "create book" option since it's exteremly flawed) that has an intro of 50 pages.
I'm done designing those 50 pages, and now I want to "forget" about them and collapse them, so I can focus on other pages, and also get to them quicker without needing to scroll through all those pages.

This could be done by grouping the intro and having the option to collapse it,…

  13. User interface is getting worse and worse

I am still on CS6, because newer versions have been less stable and don't bring any benefits I need. Now I tried InDesign CC 2018 and realize that the contrast of the UI gets worse (dark grey on light grey or vice versa, additionally you cannot distinguish inactive/greyed-out menu topics), that the palettes needs more space on the screen without any reason for doing this and more dialogs/messages are not on the original OS design but in a new style. I suppose this is for tablet usability, but within this app really makes no sense to me. You…

  14. Add features to draft legal briefs

Legal filings are just complicated, cross-linked books.

Lawyers have to follow court rules when typesetting appellate briefs.
    See e.g., http://www.ca2.uscourts.gov/clerk/case_filing/rules/rules_home.html
    https://www.supremecourt.gov/filingandrules/rules_guidance.aspx

WordPerfect has a few useful features: see "Legal Toolbar" https://www.wordperfect.com/en/product/professional-edition/#features

You should add a feature to create a Table of Authorities (ToA). The ToA lists each authority cited along with every page on which it is cited. The ToA has different sections for different kinds of authorities, e.g., cases, statutes, etc.

The best way would be to have InDesign identify authorities/citations. Most lawyers follow the Bluebook. https://www.legalbluebook.com/default.aspx
Others follow the RedBook or the MaroonBook.

    Make selecting, dragging, and dropping…

  15. Show colour settings for new documents

    Hi there.
Please add a drop down menu to choose colour intent when making new documents. By default, print presets are CMYK in colour profile and transparency blend space. Web is RGB for both.
I use Print presets all the time for new documents. But I want those page sizes in RGB colour mode and blend space.
It would be informative to the user to have the colour settings of any document or template shown and user selectable when they are setting up a new document.

  16. Make style name indentations smaller

Lot's of unnecessary whitespace, requires wider than necessary panel widths on smaller screens.

  17. Delete unused

In several menu's 'Select unused [...]' can be found.
I think everyone uses this to get rid of unused Swatches, Styles etc.

Why not add 'Delete unused [...] to the menu?

  18. Snap-to status indicators

Add an indicator somewhere that's always visible that displays the current status of the Snap-to-Guides and Snap-to-Document-Grid controls. It could also act as the on/off switch for them.

Now there's no way to tell if the snap-to mode is engaged or not without either dragging something around to see if it snaps-to a guide or grid, or going into the View > Grids & Guides pull-down menu.

  19. FORM - COMB, order, styles

Primarily, for me, is the painstaking task of setting "comb of" characters, and even worse setting the right tab order.

Panel for setting tab order in InDesign, under Object>Interactive is horrible. It is too small, height-wise, and does not function well all the time. Often it happens to "jump". I get nr. 47 after 46, but it jumps before 46.

I sometimes have over 70 form fields to sort on a single page and it is taking too much time and patience to set it right.

If you could work on that tab order panel, make it larger, and give…

  20. Number & nombre

Hey Guys, you should'nt translate NUMBER by NUMÉRO in French for exemple NUMBER of column in menu Pages → Margins and Columns ) but by NOMBRE. NOMBRE is the right word in this case.

    Thank you so much.

    Regards

    Ben
