1. Add support for language based typographic rules

   Each language has its own set of traditional rules related to hyphens, dashes, quotation marks, punctuation, hyphenation, spaces etc. Most of the rules are pretty simple and it is very easy to apply them using a list of search-replace sequences.

   To significantly improve the quality of typesetting, Adobe should provide users a tool to clean up texts (remove additional spaces for instance) and create output matching the style guides and orthographic rules.

   The rules should be defined for each language and/or region. There are different quotation marks in German used in Germany or in Switzerland; in French used in France or in Québec province; in Spanish used in Spain or on Latin America; in English used in UK or in US.

   This is a list of before and after examples based on US typographic rules:
   don`t > don’t (use of correct typographic apostrophe U+2019)
   me – or him > me—or him (use of em-dash without spaces or with thin spaces)
   Go. Go now. > Go. Go now. (remove extra spaces)
   "Hello!" > “Hello!” (use correct quotation marks)
   Dr. Newton > Dr. Newton (add nonbreaking space after academic titles)
   1974-2001 > 1974–2001 (covert hyphen into en-dash in ranges)
   20cm2 > 20 cm² (add nonbreaking space before units, use proper superior numbers)
   etc. etc. etc.
   My own list contains around 100 corrections.

   There are several existing solution for CMS based websites (typogrify, WP-Typography). There is a stand-alone tool Typopo.org https://app.typopo.org/. So there is a good fundament for InDesign as well.

   I think users in 21th century deserve a tool to improve the typographic quality of the texts in one click.

2. Book

   I use indb files extensively. It opens short, large display and in middle of field. I make small panels, pull it below bottom file and move it. Why can’t we control its display like other panels ?

3. Have a linked page display on a page

   IIt would be incredibly useful to display a page within an object on another page. This would also update automatically whenever the page updated and show up in the links panel like other links. You could then treat it like any other linked object by being able to crop, resize, etc.

   This would reduce the amount of exports and reimports and allow for greater flexibiity.

   Dear InDesign Development Team,
   My name is Eldad Pnini, and I manage a graphic design studio that relies heavily on Adobe InDesign -
   not only for print design, but also for digital content creation.
   Currently, InDesign offers basic animation capabilities, but we believe there is significant untapped potential. At our studio, we use InDesign to design banners, landing pages, social media posts, and stories - and simple animations (like entrance, exit, movement, fade, etc.) are a daily need. We would greatly appreciate seeing major improvements to the animation tools in future versions.
   However, the most important feature we request is the ability to export animations directly from InDesign as video files - such as .mp4, .mov, .avi, or .gif. Direct export, without relying on intermediate files or external software.
   Adding this capability would make InDesign a much more powerful tool for digital work, significantly increase its adoption among younger designers, and create a smarter and more streamlined creative workflow.
   We’d love to know whether this is something Adobe is currently considering and whether expanded animation and video export features are planned in future versions.

5. 3 new features for web address problems - a major problem in modern textual books

   In textual books there now can be hundreds of web addresses used within the text and references. There is a major problem with them in the fact that in justified text they can cause:
   (a) widely spaced lines
   (b) InDesign can insert discretionary hyphens to try to split the address to make the word spacing better (which means that when printed the web address would be wrong for the reader as it has hyphens that shouldn't be there).

   The only workaround at the moment for this is to remove the discretionary hyphens by either hitting a return in its place, or inserting the Discretionary Break character to help InDesign find places to break the web address.
   These, however, are not work arounds because the Break character or return means that in a PDF the link will not work as it sees these characters even if the reader doesn't. Even if you use the Hyperlink Panel in InDesign you would have to remove any discretionary hyphens or break characters from within the Hyperlink panel window for it to work.

   All this is extremely time-consuming.

   SOLUTIONS
   (1) New Website Character Style. If InDesign could have a special character style for web addresses so that when applied it would mean that no discretionary hyphens can appear, but the web address can split on any character.
   (2) New Website Break Character. If InDesign could have a break character for web addresses that is not seen by Acrobat or the Hyperlink Panel in InDesign so that you can split websites wherever you want without them losing their link in PDFs.
   (3) When a web address is very long and goes over several lines, it means that there will be lines with no word spaces. InDesign does not know what do and it will leave the lines short. If the Web Address Character Style could also feature a way of making the lines go to the full text measure but without too much letter spacing or scaling would be a big aid too.

   If the above solutions were made there would be no more problems in InDesign with web addresses. Remember that web addresses are being used more and more in books and interactive PDFs and this problem is only going to get bigger and bigger.

   Please could you find a solution if you don't like mine!

6. Object styles to include layer allocation

   E.g.. Text frame (object style) can be then assigned to text layer and moved accordingly.
   It would work well for images/charts, etc for long docs such as Annual Reports, etc
   Would be a good organisational tool to keep text layers above image/graphics that can cause issues.

8. Datamerge with several different datasources for different versions

   Version: CC19 (14.0.1) on Mac OS 10.13.6 (High Sierra)

   When there are datamerge-placeholders that are not in the datasource, the export aborts and you have to delete the placeholder.
   When these placeholders are on invisible layers the same happens.

   In my case, sometimes i get different datasources for different versions of the same document so i put the different version on a new layer and make it invisible until i use the corresponding datasource for it.

   Maybe a choice for the user to continue nontheless (only when placeholders are on invisible layers, to protect the user from using the wrong datasource on visible layers) would be a nice way of handling that situation instead of aborting immediatly. It would be more flexible and yet still warning the user about missing datasource-fields.

   A second solution could be, to set a flag on the affected fields in the datamerge-panel, so they get ignored by the placeholder check. That way i could use them on my invisible layer without the need to delete them for export.

9. Show version number in Windows

   The version number is always visible in the top of the application window on MacOS since CC 2018. However it is not present in the Windows version of InDesign or InCopy.

   This is a great tool when you are troubleshooting and I would love to see it in the Windows versions as well.

10. Create Picture Index with Page numbers

    I need to edit documents with hundreds of pages and I use Paragraph Styles to create automatic alphabetical indexes that will work has hyperlinks when I export do PDF.

    Nevertheless, sometimes it's more practical to have a picture índex when working with product catalogues.
    It would be very usefull to have the Content collector tool to allow to create automatic hyperlinks to the page where I collected the pictures in order to create na automatic Picture Index with page numbers.

    The attached file makes it easy to understand.

    Please, please please bring back Mini Bridge! As a designer who works on lots of books and publications with tons of pieces and parts, Mini Bridge was an invaluable tool! I didn't have to continuously go to >File>Place and go find my graphics. They were always right there where I needed them.

12. Recent Files pane usability problems.

    The Recents Pane has serious problems for InDesign Book users. There are two main problems:

    1. Not enough Recent files are listed.

    The limited number of recent files results in ONE project taking over ALL the recent files every time you make an adjustment to the book, because EVERY CHAPTER becomes a recent file. In my books, there are often more chapters than allowed in Recents, so it's not even useful as a way to access chapters (which obviously is best done with the Book panel).

    1. There is no way to manage Recents.

    Realistically, there is NO reason one would want to see all chapters in Recents just because a renumbering task was completed. It would be a nuisance, but after repaginating a Book, I would then immediately delete ALL the chapters listed in Recents. Of course, there are other files that might be opened briefly for trivial reasons, and which need not take up space in Recents.

    Conclusion: The Recents facility is so lacking in usability features that it is more of an annoying distraction than anything helpful for accessing or managing work files.

    I have discussed these problems before, but the FUNCTION of Recents doesn't seem to be of much interest to the UX people. Instead of allowing me to MANAGE the Recents, they come up with cute slogans to occupy valuable screen real estate. Why? Who wants to see "Create a Style" every session?

    Most of InDesign is spectacularly functional. This cosmetic Recents concept is surprisingly useless and out of place for anyone who isn't a beginner.

    The Recents Pane has serious problems for InDesign Book users. There are two main problems:

14. More powerful use of Conditional Text

    Conditional text is a great tool, but limited. It could be used to apply formatting to text that would survive the "clear overrides" of para or char styles.

    I can see that conditional formatting that changed the text itself could be difficult to implement (such as font size, applying italics, small caps, no break, no hyphenation...) but if it could do that, it could prove very handy to giving a persistent formatting "style" that would not be affected by clearing overrides.

    Also: Sometimes highlighting or underlining is not appropriate. I'd like a flag in the margin that marks the beginning of the conditional text. An icon (or 2-letter ID) in the right/left/inside/outside margin would be great. And also, the possibility of a vertical rule that entends for the length of the conditional text, in the margin.

    Also: a preview checkbox when defining conditional text.

15. We need much more comprehensive word/character counts functionality

    We need much better support for word counts than simply selecting some text or an active story and getting feedback on it through the info panel.

    As others suggest, we need support for Books, entire documents, I want to know how many words are in tables, footnotes, how many words are duplicated from master pages, give me a breakdown of words by style/font/colour so that I can use these parameters to easily subtract them from a count.

    Pretty much like Illustrator when nothing is selected can give you a breakdown of information document wide, and then specifics when you select objects. This is how the info panel needs to be updated so that if I select a bunch of text frames mixed with an assortment of other items, InDesign is smart enough to decipher and relay information relevant to what it is I have selected be that words, characters, lines, paragraphs through to even number of rows or columns, tables, images etc.. Then give me that as it applies to the whole document when I don't have anything selected.

    If a feature like this would be too stressful on system responsiveness/useability then move the requested enhancements in the File info section from the flyout of the Info panel as the info there is pretty pants and could be made so much more informative

    Swatches, Styles, Images (embedded versus linked), Pages, White space calculator to infer coverage of a page. The list could go one but you get the picture.

    Let make it a bit more useful eh?

16. Add PDF Appearance hyperlink setting in the preference

    I generate catalog automaticaly with PIM data, API... The issue i am facing is all my hyperlinks are coming with Visible rectangle in the hyperlink panel setting. When I do a PDF it keeps this rectangle and my users use only Acrobat reader without possibility to hide the rectangle.
    How can I set this setting as "Invisible rectangle" by defaut in my document when the data is sent automaticaly in my Indesign document.

17. Dynamic Data Merge Updates in InDesign even after Generated

    Currently, after completing a data merge, the generated document loses its link to the source Excel/CSV file, making it impossible to update content (like product names or prices) without re-running the entire merge. This becomes a major issue when we've manually added custom pages, layout tweaks, image adjustments, or element placements based on text length—re-merging resets everything.

    Suggestion:
    Introduce a "Dynamic Merge" option in the Data Merge panel that maintains live links to the CSV/Excel source. This way, users can choose between a static or dynamic output. With dynamic mode, merged fields remain linked and identifiable, allowing easy content updates from the original data file without losing layout changes.

    This would save huge amounts of time and prevent repetitive layout work.

18. Add option to "Find this style" just like "Find this colour"!

    I would be great to have the ability to find a style (Paragraph, Character or Object) straight form the panels (Ctrl + click on a style) to quickly find obscure and unused styles without having to open the Find/Change panel.

    This option is already available to find a colour in a document and it is very useful, so it would only be logical to do the same for styles, no?

    It would be especially appreciated when one takes over a project that’s already been started... with styles galore!

19. zoom in/zoom out functionality on the Add Bullets dialogue box

    Please, PLEASE can the next version of InDesign offer zoom in/zoom out functionality (the same as you see bottom-right of the Glyphs panel) to the Add Bullets dialogue box.

    Currently, the scrolling area where you can select a bullet character is so small, less than 4% of the screen on my monitor, with no way to zoom in. (see attached screenshot)

20. Make Scripts Embeddable into InDesign Documents

    It would be great, scripts could be embedded into InDesign documents, so any user working with the document could execute the embedded script for this document.

    These embedded scripts show up in the scripts panel in their own area, next to the other areas "application", "user", "community" –> "embedded"..

    The script itself should optionally be protectable with a password and be saved in JSBIN format, so it’s executable, but could not be changed or extracted by the user.
