Having the same issue.
It seems like the extra space appears in the text variable only when the variable is on the same page as the source text. For instance, I see an extra space corresponding to a soft return character in the chapter title in the running head on the first page of the chapter, but the space does not appear in the running head on subsequent pages.

I ran into this same issue (though in my case it seems to affect all GREP styles). As far as I can tell, adding a nested line style breaks all GREP styles applied to the paragraph. This is a significant problem; please investigate. Thank you.

Agreed. Breaking GREP styles out of paragraph styles, but continuing to allow paragraph styles to reference them, would be very helpful. It would eliminate the need to manually copy GREP styles from one paragraph style to another, and it would allow for naming GREP styles as well.

Perhaps also incorporate the Chicago Manual of Style's guidelines for breaking URLs.

This would be beneficial for styles of all kinds. Maybe each parameter in the style could even indicate which style it is inherited from.

Agreed: I just tried the new Properties panel for the first time. It's very promising, but unfortunately it's unusable for me because I keep accidentally changing field values when trying to scroll within the panel.

Agreed, this should be an option in the hyphenation settings. It is required for conformation to many standard style guides.
