When importing tables through tagged text, formatting inexplicably and erratically lost; extra hard returns inserted
- Adobe InDesign 20.5
- Flow the attached .txt files (tagged text) into an InDesign file. you'll need paragraph styles "TABC", "TABH1", "TABTX", and "TAB" (the paragraph for the table). You'll also need table style "TAB" and a cell style "tabtx".
- The last cell in table 19.2 should be empty—no hard return. The the text in row 2, column 3 of table 19.4, "katab" should be italic.
- There's a hard return in the last cell of table 19.2; any text in cell R2C3 in table 19.4 is not ital (but note that the text in table 19.2 at R2C3 is italic as expected.
- See the attached tagged text and Word files as well as the attached screen shot.
When importing tagged text, I am seeing some formatting—like italic—dropped, and I'm also seeing extra hard returns inserted in the last cell of the table. These problems seem to be intermittent and unpredictable. For example, in a cell with this text
<CellStart:><ParaStyle:TAB_TX><cTypeface:Italic>katab<cTypeface:><CellEnd:>
"katab" is not being italicized, but in a cell with this text
<CellStart:><ParaStyle:TAB_TX><cTypeface:Italic>qəṭál<cTypeface:><CellEnd:>
"qəṭál" is italicized just fine.
If I copy and paste the "qəṭál" cell into the first file replacing the "katab" cell, "qəṭál" is not italicized. I've attached the tagged text and Word files for each.
The other weird thing I'm seeing is a hard return inserted in an otherwise empty last cell in the table. You can see it in the table 19.4 file.
If it helps, I can upload the InDesign template as well.

InDesign 20.5 nonresponsive in paragraph/character styles after Windows update KB5065789
After a Windows 11 update to "September 29, 2025—KB5065789 (OS Builds 26200.6725 and 26100.6725) Preview" InDesign is nonresponsive hanging for minutes at a time trying to navigate menu options in Paragraph Styles and Character Styles.
The same happens with prior versions of InDesign with this Windows Update.
Confirmed the problem occurred on two different users/machines, with a new blank document.2 votes -
InDesign process dies after 3 minutes
I'm facing the following problem. I'm on a new Windows 11 (24H2) and have Creative Cloud and various apps like Photoshop (26,11), Illustrator (29.8.2) or InDesign (20.5) installed. Every app works fine except InDesign. No matter what INDD file I work on, what menu I'm in or if I just leave the app open showing the start page, after 3 minutes the InDesign.exe dies. I've checked that I have the latest updates, reinstalled it, removed all presettings of previous versions, tried to run as admin and in compatibilty mode. Nothing changes. It runs 3 minutes and then suddenly dies. In Windows event logs is nothing reported around that moment so I have no clues, what's the reason.

When uploading the share for review file, the upload hung up for a long time. It finally went through, but once I followed the link I get an Error 404: Asset not found in safari.
Have refreshed the link multiple times with no change.

Documents appear blank after waking computer from sleep
Anytime I leave documents open, and my computer goes to sleep (even display sleep), nothing is viewable until I close the file and reopen it. I had this problem previously, and in typical Adobe fashion it stopped and has recently come back. Incredibly annoying, and happens every time when documents are left open and the laptop goes to sleep. Seems to mostly happen when connected to a 2nd monitor.

".pdf" added to packaged files
Since InDesign 2025 launch, when packaging files InDesign adds ".pdf" file name to created packaged folders. It is annoying and incorrect.

When copying text between InDesign documents, the Word order changes
When copying text between InDesign documents, the Word order changes
I have a textlbox with this content:
"22. DEZ - 03. JAN Weihnachtsferien Ende"I copy this block of text to the clipboard. Then I switch to another InDesign document and paste the text from the clipboard into it. In the target document, however, InDesign changes the order of the text components into a completely meaningless sequence
"JAN Weihnachtsferien Ende .03 - DEZ .22"I made another attempt with this text:
"Eins 6 Zwei 5 Drei 4 Vier 3 Fünf 2 Sechs 1"In the target document, InDesign turns it into the following text:
"1 Sechs 2 Fünf 3 Vier 4 Drei 5 Zwei 6 Eins"So it seems that the sorting isn't arbitrary, but rather a specific order is being achieved. But what's the point of this nonsense? How can I prevent this nonsensical behavior?
I use Release 20.5 x64 on Win10

InDesign hangs constantly during normal editing with no CPU spike, on very fast win. 11 laptop with plenty of memory and drive space.
When using InDesign normally (editing text, copying, pasting, rearranging objects, etc.). I am not saving, exporting, or anything, CPU does not spike, there is plenty of memory and disk space, it is a new high end laptop, it is plugged in, there are no power save features on.
This didn't happen on my older win 10 machine and in older versions of InDesign.
This SEVERELY interrupts workflows as it happens at least once every 15 min or so if not more.

pdf comments
Some pdf comments are not correctly imported in indesign. Mostly small remarks like punctuation marks, small text inserts,....

2-9% CPU usage when application is in background/minimized - happens on multiple computers
2-9% CPU usage when application is in background/minimized. This happens on multiple computers. Older machines have seen up to 30% in IDLE. My newer PC runs 2-3% even with only one document open.
This is unsustainable both for PC resource use, energy efficiency, and usability.
There is no GOOD reason for this.
It has been an issue for multiple years now. Please fix!

[ID-4265787]InDesign 20.4.0 and above freezes when connected with Enterprise VPN
Impossible to work with the latest version of InDesign 20.5. The screen freezes after a few second work. Only "end task" on Task manager is closing the program. (Working on PC under Windows 11 Enterprise)
Only solution in the meantime is to switch to Version 19.5.5.2 votesThe fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2026(v21.0.0.192). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application, click on the context menu on the top right, and click on Check for App Updates.

[ExtendScript] app.languagesWithVendors.itemByName fails.
Adobe Indesign 20.5 on MacOS 15.6.1
To reproduce:
- run the following script:
(function () { var targetLanguageName = 'Dutch: 2005 Reform'; // try to get the language the normal way var targetLanguage = app.languagesWithVendors.itemByName(targetLanguageName); if (!targetLanguage.isValid) alert('Language "' + targetLanguageName + '" is invalid when accessed via `itemByName`.'); else return; // now loop over the languages checking the name each time for (var i = 0; i < app.languagesWithVendors.length; i++) if (app.languagesWithVendors[i].name === targetLanguageName) targetLanguage = app.languagesWithVendors[i]; if (targetLanguage.isValid) alert('Language "' + targetLanguageName + '" is valid when accessed by index.'); })();Expected result: that app.languagesWithVendors.itemByName returns a valid language for "Dutch: 2005 Reform" and the script exits quietly.
It returns an invalid object. But note that we can get the valid language directly by looping over each language.

Window Explorer made unusable by opening InDesign
Windows 11
InDesign Ver. 20.5Here's an odd one. InDesign doesn't appear to be crashing or freezing, itself, but it is instead making my Windows explorer taskbar unusable. I can't select any icon pinned to it--they won't even highlight when I cursor over them--and only opening and closing the task manager will make them selectable again. I've tried to replicate this happening with other programs, but it's only happening when InDesign is made active.
Can't seem to figure out what's triggering it, but it tends to happen on start-up of the program and at random intervals while using InDesign. Suddenly I can't switch out of it and have to force reset the windows explorer by "ctrl+alt+del"-ing.
Any thoughts on what could be doing this? We've tried running multiple updates and resets (to both Adobe and Windows) to no avail.

Data Merge panel doesn't import UTF-8 data when selecting "UTF-8" encoding option
I’m using Adobe InDesign v. 20.5.0.48 on the macOS v. 15.6.1. I have a “merge.csv” data file encoded in UTF-8 that imports into the Data Merge panel when I select “ASCII” as the encoding but, unsurprisingly, doesn’t display some special characters correctly. When I select “UTF-8” as the encoding option, which should remedy this problem, the file fails to import!

The first letter typed in is English even when my system is set to Hebrew
I'm using Indesign 20.5 on an Intel Mac Pro running Mac OS Sequoia 15.6.
Here are the steps to reproduce the issue:
1. Insert a new text box and enter some English text.
2. Select the text
3. Change the keyboard input to Hebrew.
4. Start typing in Hebrew. The resulting text will be an English letter (corresponding to the Hebrew letter typed in) followed by the correct Hebrew letters typed.
Two things to note:
1. You must select all the text in the text box for this issue to take place.

Alternate Layouts lost, names missing and out of order
I've had a reoccuring issue of InDesign documents with multiple alternate layouts 'losing' their layout names and placements.
I've attached a screenshot of what my alternate layouts should look like, and then again what they now look like.
InDesign no longer sees it as an alternate layout. This seems to happen some time after working in a file, or re-opening a file.
No updates have been made to InDesign between closing and re-opening these files.I'm on MacOS Sequoia 15.6

Preferences reset popup penalty
When an existing user has been driven by degrading performance to the extreme step of resetting user preferences, please do not also make us undergo the maddening experience of dealing with the ENDLESS blue popups / tooltips / ads for the features we've already seen and considered. You could make an argument for forcing a user to deal with the blue boxes on a major upgrade. A preferences reset is not the same situation. Please consider reducing the burden of this type of visual pollution in our workspaces.

Add colour values to swatch list when placing file from Illustrator
It would be beneficial if, when placing a file in an InDesign document from illustrator, that the colour value information of that file be added to the Swatches menu. Strangely, the colour values do import into my Swatches when I copy and paste an object I’ve created in Illustrator onto my artboard but not when I place/import that object within a picture box.
Another minor gripe - when pasting an object it does not retain the name of the colour if it has a custom name - it only brings the swatch in as the colour values.
