Split and even out footnotes in a two column layout
We work on academic books, and academics love footnotes. When working with a two-column layout, the footnotes of each column appear at the bottom of that column. So far so good. But when there are a lot of footnotes things get messy, one column can be 50% filled with footnotes and the column next to it can have only 1-2 lines of footnotes (or even none). This doesn't look particularly nice.
We are wondering if there is a way to even them out?
I know it is possible to set the footnotes in one-column, but that doesn't look good. Would it however be possible to sever the link between the footnotes and the columns in such a way that the footnotes of one text frame are evened out over two columns. This would mean that if in the first column there are 15 footnotes and in the second column there are 5, they are middled in such a way that on the bottom of each column you have 10 footnotes. This would mean that not all footnotes would appear below the column in which they are invoked (since they can also be send to the other column of the same textframe) but they do appear on the same page. This will bother no-one and it will look a lot better.
For examples of what I mean, please see: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10939451

Insert special character — Unicode compliance
Unicode is required to meet accessibility standards and several forms of publishing technologies.
The keyboard shortcuts and right-click/opt-click Insert Special Characters shortcuts need to be updated to insert the Unicode versions of these glyphs.
The Unicode glyph charts are at www.Unicode.org

Print miniatures (multiple pages) with definable scale rate and border style
1) Please add option to print miniatures with a definable scale rate
2) Please allow to print multiple pages (with 100% actual size) on one sheet
3) Please add printing option to apply something like an object style to the pages (e.g. border style, drop shadow)These features would be great timesavers for internal discussions and external presentations during the whole design process.

Please add an Ink Manager indicator in Swatches panel
Add an indicator to Swatches panel, showing which swatches are affected by Ink Manager. Would help prepress and collaborators know the true story of document swatches.
NOTE: this has been proposed by other users, but I was asked to post this after I tweeted about it. So forgive redundancy. Or take it as a sign that it's a good idea. ;-)14 votes -
Associate master pages with paragraph tags
As one has been able to do in Framemaker, one should be able to assign a master page automatically based on a paragraph tag, i.e., if paratag ChapterTitle, then assign master page "ChapterOpener". This is important because often reflows move openers to different pages, meaning that EVERY master page in the document then needs to be evaluated and reassigned given its new position.

Workspace
Please can there be an option to export a workspace, like Swatches and Paragraph styles? Every time with the new update, we have to take 30min to rebuild our workspaces. It would take so much less time to just load our workspace we are used to.

Make Preflight more intelligent/efficient about refreshing itself
It seems like whenever one single linked file is edited, preflight starts its entire 'checking' process over from scratch every time. This is extremely slow and inefficient.
Say I have a document containing 200 linked psd files. I edit one of those in photoshop and then update the link in indesign. Preflight then proceeds to check/process all 200 links over again. Can it be made more intelligent so that it only re-checks what has actually changed?

Effects styles similar to Photoshop?
For example, I have a better looking set of values for drop shadows besides the default. However I have to manually enter these in every time, no way to save them as a preset. It would be nice to at least be able to copy the saved style preset from an object to another, similar to the way you can in Photoshop.

Table Cell Background Image
It would be really helpful if we could use an image as a background inside a table cell.
Or even just improve the ability to insert an image directly into a table cell, making the actual cell boundary function as the graphic frame.
Currently we can only paste a graphic frame into a cell as an anchored object, which is very cumbersome to align and position with all the levels of nesting involved.

Allow footnotes start not on the same page as their marker
Indesign is strictly forcing the rule that a footnote should start on the same page where its footnote reference is located. While this is usualy helpful, sometimes it creates problems like large white areas or even complete inability to layout the text.
See for example the images below. Image 1 shows how indesign can't put any text and leaves white pages - actually the layout stops here and no text is viewable on next pages.
Image 2 shows the reason: there are 2 footnote markers on the same row, both with long texts on the footnotes. so when the text of footnote 3 exceeds current page, ID has to put the rest of the row on this page, with the marker for footnote 4, but the content of footnote 4 has to appear on next page!
So my suggestion is to add a checkbox on the footnote options dialog box allowing footnotes not to START on the same page as their marker. (there is already a marker for "allow split footnotes". this is not enough to solve my problem)Indesign is strictly forcing the rule that a footnote should start on the same page where its footnote reference is located. Lock Pages - Lock Pages to prevent changes when specific page design has been finalized
I'm working on a 55 page Yearbook and I'm now working on a page per page basis; I complete one page and move on. Some of the pages I know FOR SURE that they are done; I would love to be able to lock them to prevent further changes. They would not be altered by master page changes or anything else; just locked and ready to go.

XML Enhancements
InDesign is having huge XML limitations, even we cannot handle below mentioned basic options:
(1) Find and Replace the XML Tags with / without Parent XML Tags
(2) Find and Replace the XML Attributes based on the selected XML Tags
(3) Converting the selected contents in InDesign into XML Comments
(4) Copy and paste the contents directly in InDesign from any XML editors without losing XML Tags and XML Attributes
(5) Show all selected XML Tags with relevant page numbers with link to locate the contentsMuch more…
If Adobe is start thinking on improving / breaking these requirements, will be much helpful to handle XML first workflow projects easily within InDesign.
@ALL: if you agree, please vote for this idea.

Will it soon be possible to add gradients as well as color swatches to the CC Libraries?
We need to import gradients to CC libraries in InDesign as well to provide more detailed design-guideline components for our brands. Will there be a possibility soon? Kind regards:)

Custom Tagging/Grouping Filter for Fonts
I'm posting this in InDesign, but the implementation may be easier as a Cloud feature so that it would be viable through all the Adobe programs that heavily use font (Photoshop/Illustrator/InCopy/etc.)
I'd love the ability to add custom tags to my fonts that are personalized to my individual account, and the subsequent ability to filter fonts by my tags.
Example: I might tag several fonts that I purchased a license for only a specific client under their name (PrivateCo). I might also tag several different fonts I received from a client to do a marketing campaign for under their name (ClientLLC). That way I can remember that all those fonts should not be used for a third party's project that I'm working on (BigCorp).
With the addition of a filter, I could filter out (or in) fonts that are for specific clients and not worry about forgetting down the line that I should not use this specific subset of the Helvetica font because I received it for use with "ClientLLC"'s projects only.
I could also set things like your favorite go-to script fonts "favscripts," which would reduce hunt and peck time through the (seemingly) endless font drop-down while I'm trying to decide what script font best suits my project.
I like the idea of "tags" rather than a straight grouping function because that means I could add more than one tag to a font based on need (ie-"favscripts," "favhandwritten"), and then filter by whatever tag word best describes what I'm looking for.

Publish Online Dashboard access via Adobe Account
It would be nice if you could access the Publish Online Dashboard via your Adobe Account online. Currently, you have to open InDesign and then navigate to the dashboard that way, but if you are already in an internet browser and logged into your Adobe Account, there should be a way to get to the dashboard.

Ability to place 'live' endnotes at end of story, not in separate frame
Fairly straightforward - current 2018 endnotes are forced into a separate frame, rather than being at the end of the text in the story. This means having to constantly manually moved them about when text frames are being adjusted. Need the ability to have the same positional behaviour at the end of the body text within the same story frame as endnotes have always previously had (preferably whilst still being live, but failing that, the ability to turn off the new behaviour would be sufficient).

Repeat Grid
I'd love to see the Adobe XD Repeat Grid function redeveloped into InDesign. This would be invaluable to many publication designers that have repetitive layouts. Master Pages are great, but I think if it incorporated the repeat grid, it would increase workflow efficiency.
