1. Make Paste Remembers Layers the Default

   Make 'Paste Remembers Layers' the default. By default this is an option that must be selected, but this should be the default behavior. You will note the number of suggestions on this very forum for this feature that already exists. There is never going to be an occasion under which I do not want to paste to the original layer, and I often want to copy and paste multiple objects on different layers. However, this feature is well hidden in the layers panel menu options, disabled by default. Moreover 'Paste in Place' should likewise be the default. When would it ever be useful to randomly paste an object just somewhere on the page? It may not always be necessary to paste in place, but it will be the desired behavior more often than not. These should be default behaviors, optional to the user, but enabled by default.

3. Make the start/end of a stroke highlight when you choose an arrowhead for the start/end in the Stroke panel

   It is very frustrating when applying an arrowhead to a stroke when you don't know what InDesign calls the start or end of that stroke. It's not so bad when you've drawn a straight line but a number of times, we edit shapes to create complex lines. Then it's a case of trial and error as to which end you place the arrow (and most of the time, typically, you end up choosing the wrong end. I know there is the ability to swap these but it would be useful if when you hover over either the start or end drop down boxes it would highlight which end of the line you're going to apply the style to.

   It would be great if there were a way to group pages with the same header, or automatically have a header include all page numbers between the page the header appears and the next header appears.

   For example, the publication I'm building has a few top-level categories, like Pens, Pencils, Pastels, etc… and then sub-categories of name brands within those main category sections, like Bic, Sharpie, Prisma, etc…

   Given that I'm already using the "alphabetical order" feature to make the ToC sort of like an Index as well, I'd like to be able to automatically include the pages in the whole section (in this case "5-50") instead of having to go in after the fact to make the change.

   It would be great if there were a way to group pages with the same header, or automatically have a header include all page numbers between the page the header appears and the next header appears.

5. Find / Change Format enhancements (find font variants / implement NOT logic)

   I've just been conducting extensive Find / Replace operations on a number of documents, and I've been struck with a way to streamline certain operations. It's currently possible to find specific formats, either specifics relating to the typeface(s) used, size, leading, etc.; or search for specific character and / or paragraph styles.

   When searching for specifics, it would be useful to be able to search for a more generic usage of 'Italic', say - so, if you search for 'Italic', it would match 'Italic', 'Bold Italic', '500 Italic', 'Oblique' etc. Currently you must search for every iteration of italic based on the specific reference used by the typeface you're using.

   A second enhancement would be to implement NOT logic in the search which would enable the finding of manually-formatted text (search for all instances of 'Italic' that are NOT already assigned with the character style 'Italic'). The current method means you have to manually check all instances, irrespective whether they're already formatted.

6. Arched Text similar to Illustrators Envelope.

   I would love to see your team make an envelope “arching text” type of option similar to how Illustrator does it, especially if it could maintain its text editing capabilities. This would be very helpful because there are times when I am doing a Banner or Plaque or some other type of layout and the client requests arched text for the individuals names, and this can sometimes number in the range of 50-75 names. And having the arched text feature would allow me to create a master page for the general design template, and link the text boxes so the names could simply be pasted in, and take on the arched effect. I would still need to go back and adjust some of them but it would be faster than having to arch them all in Illustrator and then link them to my template in In-Design. Sorry so wordy. :)

7. Zoom when clicking on errors in the Preflight window

   One thing has been bothering me for a long time in Indesign. I am working on a document and activate my print control in the Preflight window, if I then find errors, e.g. under "Text", I simply click on the underlined number of the page on the right and am then taken to where the error is. Unfortunately, it is always set to my 1:1 zoom, so if I want to investigate the error more closely, I have to zoom in manually or with my zoom-shortcut. If I click on the page again at the next error, I end up on the page again with the whole page displayed. But I want to stay at the same zoom level! This works well with the spell checker, for example, if I check my text at 300% zoom, I can always use the Next button in the control window to move from word to word at that zoom level.
   So is there anything that can be done to the preflight control to keep the zoom level the same?

8. A archive/backup save feature

   I recently was working on a highly important document. InDesign crashed AT THE SAME TIME as it was in the process of saving the file. I do regular saves, but because of how it crashed I couldn't revert to an earlier saved version of my file. My new workflow is to regularly save my work and I use sequential numbers e.g. filename-v01, filenam- v02. I also sometimes will use save as and create a new file called filename-backup and then I will have to do another save as to revert the document back to filename.indd. What would suit my workflow is I continue to save my file using my standard filename but I can create a 'backup' file at any time called 'filename-copy-day-time'. The extra details in the filename would be automatically added by InDesign. This would also not affect my ability to save my working file as filename.indd.

9. Include Paragraph Styles in Table Styles

   There needs to be a way of assigning paragraph styles to header rows and individual columns, not just cell styles/table styles. For example, I have a paragraph style for each of three columns in the table's header row, One for the Item Category, Regular Price heading, and Effective (sale) Price Heading. Then I have four paragraph styles for the rest of the table based on the column, one for item number, one for item description, then of course the style for regular price adn effective (sale) price. I should be able to include these paragraph styles in the table style, so that if I need to change the background (light to dark or vice versa, or removing the sale pricing column) I can just change the table style, and it adjusts all the paragraph styles within it.

10. Allow for fractional changes to % in image size (and other) fields using the keyboard arrow keys

    Thanks to images off cellphones, etc I find it difficult to resize images to fit a box using the arrow keys. This is because the dimensions are large and the resolution low.
    WORKFLOW :
    I place an image and it comes in at 4.732% (for example).
    I need to make it bigger to fit - but 5% is not big enough, and 6% is too big.
    Now I need to enter numbers into the fields - or scale using the image boundary.
    Neither are effective methods when the books I work on contain 1000 plus images each - I just want to go from (what used to be in the old days of ±300dpi images) 89% to 91% (very easy with the arrow keys or an input device such as a Griffin PowerMate or a Palette dial). But with low res images this means going from 8.9 to 9.1% (for example) - and there is no way to do that with the keyboard arrows or any input device.
    SOLUTION :
    A modifier key to allow fractional increments - similar to holding SHIFT to increase the steps in multiples of 10 we need something such as ALT (for example) to increment in steps of one tenth.

11. InCopy/Word

    I can appreciate InCopy's capability of linking multiple authors. I personally never have need of that. Here's what I wish InCopy could do: Take MS Word file and make them fully compatible with InDesign. That is ... to remove all the rookie techniques employed by so many Word users, to remove all the mysteriously bogus code that creates frustrating local formatting. Sometimes you can fix these things by saving the text as RTX (or DOC instead of DOCX) from Word, but that doubles the number of text files to store - unnecessarily complicated. Often authors have copied strings of text from non-Word sources and the original formatting refuses to strip out without saving as RTX. Force-applying styles in ID risks losing any local formatting that needs to be preserved, like italicize scientific names. This might seem trivial to ID users who don't create long repetitive documents or periodicals. But I lay out several periodicals - all using Word files created by PHDs who haven't a clue how Word works. For decades, I have searched for a solution. And I think Adobe is best qualified to solve it. We need a word processor app dedicated to InDesign.

12. InDesign Cannot Artifact Leader Dots (Accessibility)

    InDesign has no way of artifacting leader dots. This can only be done in PDF. Leader dots are commonly used in tables of contents to guide the reader's eye from the end of the entry to the page number. Leader dots are voiced by access technologies such as screen readers and force users with disabilities to hear, "DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT DOT ..." If they are not artifacted. This is a painstaking process that requires InDesign users to learn PDF Remediation, a highly specialized skillset that is typically outside the role of the average Graphic Designer. Currently, the process for artifacting leader dots is to ind the first leader dot in the Tags tree. Right click on it and choose Show in Content Panel. Expand the content containers until you find the first set of leader dots. Right click on them and choose “Create Artifact.” Ignore the options panel and click “OK” to set the artifact. Repeat with all other leader dots. This issue affects EVERY SINGLE InDesign user who is required to make accessible content. Please make artifacting leader dots an option within InDesign so painstaking remediation is not required.

13. I opened my Indesign program and a message asked if I could provide input on how to improve Indesign. Here is my reply.

    I tried to write this response in the "Help Improve Adobe Products" window that opens up on launch of Indesign, but I ran out of space:
    
    Indesign has layer after layer after layer of instructions on how do even the most common things. The problem is that in order to understand one layer, you have to understand at least the terminology and concepts of the other layers. These days, when you open the box for many devices there is a quick set up document included. I recommend that you do something like that. But not with instructional videos. Someitimes you have to watch a video several times to learn a task you make only need to use once. Furthermore, the instructors sometimes use terms that are not known to the viewer. Sometimes their mouse moves too rapidly to follow.

    Here's what I suggest. Configure a very simple numbered sequence for a given task. Make it such that the viewer can do what he needs and then move on, ie without requiring a full education in all the capabilities of the task.

    I suggest you let me send you an example of what I'm speaking of. Perhaps an example of how to change the color of text without having to master the use of swatches.

    Please let me know if this interests you.

14. Long, NOT complicated, password requirements

    Can you please stop asking me to write password with ridiculously complicate rules to try and make them more secure?! What's more is you force people to use something they have never used before as a password every time it gets re-set. What you have to remember is that REAL PEOPLE with REAL WORKING BRAINS need to be able to actually REMEMBER their password. Rather than spending 10-15 minutes every time they need to login to an application/ server re-setting their password because they can't remember it, how about you just make them use a long, random collection of words, with NO requirement for symbols, numbers or capitalisation at any point. Because you know what happens when you do ask for that? People need to be able to remember them so they put in obvious substitutions like A = 4, I = 1 and O = 0. Honestly I don't have a bloody clue why I'm explaining this as you ALL know it already but refuse to do anything about it. I'm not a coder, I'm a professional working in construction, and I can assure you I am long fed up of these ridiculous rules and of having a long string of websites and programmes that I dread having to login to because I know it's going to be a massive faff every time I do. And to steal what if someone does break in? My application profile data or various other inconsequential bits of information about 'me'? Please, please, please sort it out. It's beyond ridiculous.

15. Upsample Images on PDF Export

    DESCRIPTION:

    Indesign could offer the option of upsampling images to a specified PPI on PDF export. Rather than requiring the user to find each under-res image and manually destructively upsample each with a round-trip through Photoshop.

    Optimally, there could be a threshold setting below which an image resolution is too low. This could be either "effective" resolution PPI number threshold ("Upsample images with an effective placed resolution above 120ppi"), or a max scale percentage that would be needed to get the image up to the set output resolution ("Upsample images within 40% of target resolution." or "Upsample images by no more than 250%.")

    Export dialog could offer different options for dealing with grossly undre-res images or a global "low-resolution" preferences could be set to throw an error at the initial export command similarly to how it deals with missing or modified links.

    I understand that the Preflight panel is already designed to manage resolution issues. But I'm suggesting the option of a workflow where image upsampling happens only for a specific individual PDF output rather than permanently modifying linked source images.

    REASON:

    1. It can be time-consuming to review and override each error that a slightly under-resolution image will throw with modern highly-automated print workflows. (I mean, come on, can anyone see the difference between 280 and 300 ppi once printed? Of course not, but the press doesn't want the liability so throws automated errors if any image is even just 1% under the target resolution.)

    2. Sometimes it's necessary to use images that are not available at any additional resolution and require resampling to choose softness over pixelation. 16. We need much more comprehensive word/character counts functionality

    We need much better support for word counts than simply selecting some text or an active story and getting feedback on it through the info panel.

    As others suggest, we need support for Books, entire documents, I want to know how many words are in tables, footnotes, how many words are duplicated from master pages, give me a breakdown of words by style/font/colour so that I can use these parameters to easily subtract them from a count.

    Pretty much like Illustrator when nothing is selected can give you a breakdown of information document wide, and then specifics when you select objects. This is how the info panel needs to be updated so that if I select a bunch of text frames mixed with an assortment of other items, InDesign is smart enough to decipher and relay information relevant to what it is I have selected be that words, characters, lines, paragraphs through to even number of rows or columns, tables, images etc.. Then give me that as it applies to the whole document when I don't have anything selected.

    If a feature like this would be too stressful on system responsiveness/useability then move the requested enhancements in the File info section from the flyout of the Info panel as the info there is pretty pants and could be made so much more informative

    Swatches, Styles, Images (embedded versus linked), Pages, White space calculator to infer coverage of a page. The list could go one but you get the picture.

    Let make it a bit more useful eh?

17. Export PDF named from CSV file

    Hi.

    When I use variable data to create individual PDF files, I like to add a different and particular numbers for each pdf from a CSV file, and not consecutive numbers (1, 2 , 3, 4...)

18. By letting me download back my CS5 after a computer crash. I have my serial number etc but cannot nos find the nexcessary download for whic

    I DO NOT WANT cloud or any other of the bits and pieces, just CS5 so that I can continue working with it (being retired I certainly cannot afford any of the pricey ugrades and I don't need them)

19. More space for document name when saving

    When saving a file, the "save" or "save as" space for giving a name to a document is often too small, as it only fits about 32 characters. 64 characters would be a nice number, so every name would fit without having to scroll.

    In our production flow, we have to name our documents with the client number, the project name, the type of visual, the size, the language and, when it's ready to print, the number of copies. Our documents are often between 30 and 50 character long.

20. Add leading zeroes to single page image exports

    When exporting pages to images (something we do quite a lot in comics), it helps with further batch processing to have a sufficient number of leading zeroes as part of the exported filename.

    So instead of:
    Page 1
    Page 2
    Page 99
    Page 103

    Page 001
    Page 002
    Page 099
    Page 103

    This can be a selectable feature in the user preferences or automatically generated to pad the number of leading zeroes to match the number of pages in the exported file (e.g. if there are only 93 pages in the book, only add leading zeroes to 1-9 so all numbers are two digits. If it's 103 pages, add two leading zeroes to 1-9 and one leading zero to 10-99).

    This is default behaviour in Acrobat, so already exists within the Adobe codebase.
