Make layered PDFs Illustrator compatible
Currently, layers made from PDF exported in InDesign are not preserved when the PDF is opened in Illustrator. Would be real helpful if they were.

No option to hide the Application Bar in 2020
I noticed in 2020 there is no longer the menu option under the Window menu to hide the Application Bar. I'm not sure why this was removed, for people who don't use it it's just in the way and unnecessary especially when you're trying to use InDesign on a small screen, every inch of screen space counts. Im sure there are people out there that use it, and that's great, I'm sure they find it useful in someway, but we all use the application differently so please allow us the ability to turn it on and off.

Single Page Send for Review
Very excited for the Send for Review feature. We've been using Acrobat to do this, so having it baked into is a game changer. Is there a way to review the document as single pages instead of spreads? It helps our writers and copy editors read easier with single pages. Thank you for your help!

Pencil tool to hold specific stroke and color
In previous versions of ID i've been able to select the pencil tool (with no document open) and set it to a specific stroke and color and every time I would then click on the pencil tool to draw, it would do so with those specifications. In the latest CC version, that feature seems to be gone and now I draw and THEN have to set a stroke and color, which really slows me down! Tell me I'm not crazy like the pompous people in the forum! :)
When I'm doing a layout and sending images out for color work,…

Add a "relative to document" toggle to scale X and Y percentage
Add a "relative to document" toggle to scale X and Y percentage. So you can see the percentage of an object relative to the document size. This makes for easier scaling from different sizes. For instance if you have the toggle on and want to scale an object to 100% of the document width, just enter 100% and it will fill the complete width.

Better variable management
The ability to better manage variables in a document would be very helpful. The possibility to import a List without using 3rd party scripts, an overview which are in use and where, a search function, etc...

Ability to add an image to a note
Add the ability to add an image to a note. I work with technical manuals that are image heavy and some of my reviewers like to add examples of what they're looking for by showing an example of a different document.

Improvements to "space between" feature
Hello, InDesign people!
The new "space between paragraphs using the same style" feature is a wonderful thing, and it is useful, but I feel it could be improved upon. In practice, there may be several different paragraph styles that should be regarded as the "same style" for this purpose. For instance, say I am designing a book with poetry extracts (block quotes) mixed into the main text. Before we had the "space between" feature, I had to make a paragraph style for the first line of a poem (with space before), a second style for the subsequent lines (no paragraph…

Indexing by paragraph style...like TOC feature.
Useful for creating a roster for a large group. You would be able to create an index by paragraph style, like the functionality of Table of Contents, except that the same name on different pages wouldn't create a new entry.

Changing the Appearance in Properties Panel
In Properties Panel under "Appearance," there's a box with a "T" in it. Only when you click the box do "Color", Swatches" and "Gradient" appear. It would make more sense to have them on the right side of "Fill" so that they are visible.

The ability to make text invisible or 'replacing' it with '___' using the Character Style
I recently worked with a publication that needed to hide part of the text in different places. The full text also had to be shown next to it.
It would be possible to arrange this by means of GREP-styles, if it were possible to use some kind of pseudo font with zero character width or something like.
Also it would be useful having an opportunity visually replace any symbol with underline (such an idea is often using in a language textbooks) using character styles.0 votes -
Improve UI Efficiency of Styles Panels
SEE ATTACHED SCREENSHOT—
The UI of the styles panels is way too spacious in some areas and, as a result, way too compressed in other ways.
The panels have to be stretched wider than they should just to read all the text.
Attached screenshot has a before-and-after with analysis and proposed redesign.

Symbols panel / Quick apply formatting
Not sure if this suggestion lives under styles. What I'm thinking InDesign needs is a feature like Illustrators symbol library where we can take a group of pre styled objects and define them so that they can be easily dragged back on to the page rather than continually copying and pasting from other parts of a document on to then overtype or swap out images etc. as you build documents consisting of replicable structured content.
Functionality would need to be like Illustrator, a simple drag and drop interface on to a panel. So that any images, shapes, text frames, styles.…

Dialog box for Edit Table of Contents Style should be resizable
The Dialog box for Edit Table of Contents Style should be resizable.
The Other Styles area displays only 4 styles at a time. That's difficult to work with when document has a large number of Styles
Also, it would be helpful if typing a letter when inside the Other Styles area caused a jump in the list to the first style starting with that character

import PDF comments to include Text style
I have cliënts that make comments in PDF. In these comments they add (or replace) text using the correct comment tools. But very often some of the added text needs to be Italic or Bold or ... So they use the Text Style feature in Acrobat to italicize certain words.
But when importing PDF comments, these text styles do not show in InDesign. It would be great if this feature could be added.12 votes -
Change Bar
Change bar, as a very basic future and just as applied easily in Adobe Framemaker, I belive most users will welcome this if it is added at no cost.
Could you please consider adding this for next versions and provide it it for the current users. Thank you for your support.2 votes -
Adobe could help improve the remote production work flow for small publishing operations
Greetings.
I LOVE the Adobe Cloud suite. The only thing that's missing from the apps, which surprises me, is some sort of collaborative, drag-and-drop flatplanner capability, to tie in ads with magazine/publication production. I know subscription platforms exist, the likes of AdSalesGenius, but such a platform is way beyond our budget. We are a small-time operation with a small team.
Can't you develop an app or script that enables us to easily view the pages of our publications that are in production so we can see the updated content? Seems to me that would be an easy and natural integration…

"Publish Online" change viewer language
The default language for the viewer is English and can only be changed from the viewer. As our clients are germans, it would be very helpful to set the language to German (or any other language) while publishing online.

More control over file name when exporting multiple files (such as PNGs for an animation)
When exporting images from pages on an inDesign document it names them like this
document
document2
document3
..
document9
document10When you import these same images into Photoshop to make a stack or to start an animation the layers don't appear in the right order because photoshop obviously doesn't understand that the file without a number is the first one, and that document 10 shouldn't follow document1, so they have to be reordered manually. Could you not add a tool so we can ask or files to be called file001, file 002, ... it would save a lot of time

objects selected upon unhide just like illustrator
In Illustrator and InDesign I am able to hide objects in the doc. In Illustrator when I "unhide" all of those objects they show up and are then selected. In InDesign when I "unhide" they merely show up, but are not selected. I don't know if I'm unique in the way I use this feature, but it is very handy to "hide" everything I want to select and then "unhide" to then have the selection. It is useful because with objects that overlap, it can be very cumbersome to find a way to select a bunch of things
