[ID-4222229]Exporting to ePub (reflowable) when document has endnotes containing hyperlinks causes InDesign to hang
Version of Adobe InDesign: 15.1.2 / macOS 10.15.6
Steps to reproduce the issues: When exporting a document with endnotes containing hyperlinks to ePub (reflowable), InDesign hangs and needs to be force quit. Have tested removing all hyperlinks to tests, and document exports correctly. Have tested putting hyperlinks outside of endnotes and document exports correctly. The bug is specific to hyperlinks which are part of the endnote text.
Expected result: Successful export with endnotes reciprocally linked to text, and hyperlinks in endnote text active to respective URLs.
Actual result: InDesign hangs and needs to be force quit.
Hi,
We have been able to reproduce the issue and it is currently under investigation.

InDesign Team, I appreciate that you keep adding new features on a regular basis. However, surely the ability to export an EPUB with endnotes containing links (read: most modern citations) should take priority over some of these. Is this not core functionality? I don't understand how something so foundational could go without an update for literally years.

This is STILL a problem. Please give us an update on this. This has been marked as "under review" for almost four years.

Still isn't solved. It is even worse. Now the whole paragraph is tagged as a 'link' ( <a> ) and not just the note number. The hyperlink in a note is not tagged at all. Still.
For almost 4 years this has been a critical bug. There is no run-around for it, so please solve this. Otherwise, we can only make an epub without hyperlinks and /or must use footnotes in stead of endnotes.

I see the acknowledgement that this is a bug (and a critical one), but where is the fix? I searched for hours trying to figure out why InDesign was hanging when I tried to export my epub. It would be nice if it at least threw an error that would tell us what to do to get our epub to export. I have wasted hours of non-billable time on this bug.

Well this is a bugger, isn't it?

Would also appreciate an update on this as well as other InDesign/EPUB questions.. Is this thread being monitored by Adobe or is this a third party with no input into the actual Adobe bug-fixing schedule?

Sanyam, is it possible to get a status update on this? The acknowledgment of this bug is over two years old. Frankly, what good is an endnotes feature at all if it does not support hyperlinks? This renders endnotes unusably broken for modern citation needs.

This is a problem, since a long time. Now in version 17.4 and 18.0 it is still leading to a 'hang'. When exporting epub2 or epub3. It's only the case in Endnotes, not in Footnotes.
It's time for a fix. -

I have the same problem. Indesign also crashes on HTML export when endnotes contain hyperlinks. When links are deleted, HTML and ePUB 3 exports work fine. This is a critical issue as I work on academic books with many hyperlinked endnotes. I'm using the latest Indesign CC2022 on a 2020 Mac using OSMonterey.

After spending hours trying to work out why InDesign would hang when trying to export to reflowable ePub I found this post and it is a bug! Using InDesign 17.4 (latest version in September 2022) I can't believe THIS STILL HAS NOT BEEN FIXED two years after initial report!!!

Ran into this exact issue today, InDesign 17.0.1, Mac OS 12.1. 14-chapter book (.indb) with lots of endnotes for each chapter. Hang and force quit. Thought it was fonts, style sheets, etc, but deleting all the hyperlinks solved the hang (but meant going back and activating links)
Also had an issue with endnotes not linking to/from callouts properly, was kind of easy to fix in a text editor but with 14 chapters it took a while.
Can't believe this hasn't been solved, original post is 16 months old at this point. Pretty basic epub functionality here.

I have been experiencing this issue also. I have had to remove hyperlinks from within endnotes to be able to export to epub.

InDesign 16.4 on Mac OS Big Sur –
also had this problem – spent hours trying to get it to work . . .
exporting a .indb book containing 19 .indd files which altogether had over 1000 endnotes, many cntaining external hyperlinks –
I got it to work by converting endnotes to footnotes within InDesign for all .indd files, then on export selecting "Footnotes > Placement > End of the section (Endnotes) and it worked straight away! -

In InDesign 2020 and 2021 latest version also I'm having the same issue. If I removed the hyperlink from the Endnote Epub converted.

I'm having the same problem using InDesign CC2021 on iMac, Late 2015 (OS Mojave 10.14.6). The document has endnotes that work perfectly (round tripping) when exported to epub. When I add a few hyperlinks that appear within the endnotes and export to epub again, the hyperlinks don't work. If I add too many hyperlinks, InDesign freezes.

I'm experiencing similar problem trying to export a book with endnotes and hyperlinks contained with InD 2020. It's not exporting the endnotes backlinks properly and with active hyperlinks it crashes down during the export. So it's still an isuue it seems… 😟
