  1. Inline Anchored Graphics

Inline anchored graphics should have a "release" in the menu that is not grayed-out. Custom anchored graphics have this, but inline does not. This should be remedied.

  2. nest pages

The pages panel is the most ridiculously cumbersome thing in the world!

I make digital planners and regularly work with documents that are over 2k pages long- there is SO MUCH SCROLLING OH MY GOD
Please make pages nestable where we can group them together and expand or hide as necessary like photoshop layers folders.
if designers are working on a book there's absolutely no need to see the entire book all the time - being able to work chapter by chapter is so much easier to manage than scrolling for a month!

    Also the scrolling in…

  3. Being able to move the footnotes into any block on the page

This would enable you to have a sidebar of footnotes, rather than classically at the bottom

  4. Rename “Master Pages” to “Parent Pages”

The quote below is from the 30 Aug 2020 Washington Post. My request is to stop using the word “master” in InDesign and change to “parent/child” or another set of neutral terms.

“After the police killing of George Floyd, overdue conversations about race started happening.... Computer- and photography-related groups discussed doing away with problematic technical terms like “master” and “*****” that have long been used to refer to components that control others.“

EDIT: The asterisks in the WaPo quote were put in place by the forum interface, not by me. IMHO, this confirms my point.

  5. Make Paste Remembers Layers the Default

Make 'Paste Remembers Layers' the default. By default this is an option that must be selected, but this should be the default behavior. You will note the number of suggestions on this very forum for this feature that already exists. There is never going to be an occasion under which I do not want to paste to the original layer, and I often want to copy and paste multiple objects on different layers. However, this feature is well hidden in the layers panel menu options, disabled by default. Moreover 'Paste in Place' should likewise be the default. When would it…

  6. Serbian language

Hello, on behalf of all the page layout designers from Serbia, I am asking you to include support for the Serbian language in a future version of Indesign. We use both Cyrillic and Latin letters equally, so this option would mean a lot to us.
    Thank you!

  7. Detect metric system and offer A4, millimeters

It's pretty simple to detect the user country via the OS, so it would be very handy to start indesign with A4 and millimeter units, instead of letter and inches.

Currently, having a fresh install of inDesign, the default page size is letter. To start a new document with A4 is cumbersome. Not good at all, considering that the biggest part of the world uses the metric system and A-sized pages.

Forcing imperial units has no benefits at all, it only annoys the users outside US and Canada.

  8. Have a Dropdown arrow in the middle of Control/any Panel in Indesign So when the Mouse is Hoverd/Clicked on it The Menu/Options show up

I like the Properties Panel idea And Hiding the Control Bars on top to maybe look less daunting to newcomers but What if It has a DropDown arrow. A small panel tucked inside on top of Indesign while having a dropdown arrow in the middle so when the mouse is clicked/hovered on top it falls down occupying the same amt of space. Can also be used on every other Panel the Right one as well. Just Hover the Mouse to the extreme Right and the Panel shows up and when not more viewing space for the file. I m not…

  9. Table cell stroke missing (once save to IDML)

2019 indesign bug: When I save as an IDML version for our client, the table cell has a missing 'stroke/baseline for all the pages.

Please see comparison of 2019 and IDML version.

  10. Better text variables

Text variables are so... basic at the moment.

Can it get some love like GREPs search has? Unbelievable that you can't pull the first page or section titles... but how about some simple math operations in there too and combine them with GREP operations? Would be hugely useful to have some dynamic tools like this added to make on page information update in response to layout changes.

  12. Need a Tab with GREP/Style Change setting instead of just decimal

SHORT DESCRIPTION: A new type of tab which will accept multiple align characters in a GREP-like statement and/or align on a style change.

The video provides a longer description. In tables involving figures and footnotes, a decimal tab is often not enough. What if the footnote is a number, or the footnote is surrounded by parenthesis? These are things which our clients specify for tables in the financial reporting industry, but apply to other industries as well.

If we could specify multiple characters to align upon, in a GREP-like "or" statement, that would help. Or the ability to align on…

  13. Managing multiple tabs in InDesign is an abomination

Managing multiple tabs in InDesign is an abomination. Firstly, the tolerance between reshuffling tabs and pulling a tab out to a separate window is far too small. Try doing this on a 4K screen, move your mouse a couple of millimetres up or down and all of a sudden your tab is now it's own window. Worse still is that when you pull it back into the tabs, it goes right to the back.

This leads me to my second issue. The lack of any way to reshuffle tabs that have multiple tabs in between. There are two ways…

  14. Easier to find Span columns

I teach InDesign to beginners so we use the Properties panel a lot. I would like an easy way to find span columns directly in the Properties panel. Now you have to go to the Control panel and if it fits the screen you will find it at the right, otherwise in the Paragraph panelmenu. Such a great feature should be easier to access

  15. The ability to unlink footnote/endnotes from references, thus turning the footnote/endnotes into static notes.

As a designer who typesets thousands of pages of academic research annually, the ability to convert footnotes to endnotes and vice versa is a helpful addition (thanks InDesign team), but more features are needed:

The ability to unlink footnote/endnotes from references, thus turning the footnote/endnotes into static notes.

Currently this process is accomplished only via the benevolence and magic of Peter Kahrel's script, available here: http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/end_to_static_CC2018.jsx

The reason being, I can no longer use the InDesign XML tagging feature while the footnote/endnotes remain linked—for some reason, XML tagging of footnote/endnote text is not supported!

    If you'll indulge me, here's…

  16. Highlight changes

When 'undo' or 'redo' is clicked, go to that page and highlight what just changed, that way you won't have to hunt for it..

  17. Option to rotate all the contents of the multiple pages

Imagine, you are doing a big document in vertical orientation and its a lot of pages and then client ask that he wants to have it in horizontal instead. Without this function the process will take so much time it is painful to imagine!
The option is fairly simple and already there is a rotation page view exist just one step forward and it can be improved!

    Thank you for your attention.

  18. Increase the number of files available under the "Open recent" menu

Please increase the current maximum of 30 in Preferences > File Handling > Number of Recent Items to Display. Some of us open dozens of files every day so 60 or 100 would be more convenient.

  19. Allow for fractional changes to % in image size (and other) fields using the keyboard arrow keys

Thanks to images off cellphones, etc I find it difficult to resize images to fit a box using the arrow keys. This is because the dimensions are large and the resolution low.
    WORKFLOW :
I place an image and it comes in at 4.732% (for example).
I need to make it bigger to fit - but 5% is not big enough, and 6% is too big.
Now I need to enter numbers into the fields - or scale using the image boundary.
Neither are effective methods when the books I work on contain 1000 plus images each - I just…

  20. add effects to paragraph shading/frame

This CC 2018 Update is fantastic!

    1. The only thing I am missing is the lack of possibility to add effects like shadows, on paragraph shadings and frames.

    2. This would be extremely helpful for a heavy-graphical CI, where text - spanning over more than one column or frame - must be underlaid with shadowed frames. Actually, when page breaks are to be corrected, I have to adjust those background frames manually, which is quite time-consuming.
