1. Auto-snap row height to baseline grid

   Tables need an automated interaction of table row height with baseline grid (i.e. where row heights snap to baseline grid depending on cell contents, for instance). If this was a thing, it would solve all vertical space problems related to tables, because it would be enough to create a paragraph style with a leading matching that of the baseline grid to use and style the cells text with. Then you'd have real, modular, accurate yet automated control of tables' vertical deployment in the page space (not addressing overset cells, though).

2. Allow each section or master page spread to have a custom baseline grid

   I work on many books that have different sections, with different content. While I try to make sure everything fits and follows the same baseline grid, often that's just not the best solution. I end up using custom baseline grid options on text frames, but that also doesn't solve everything.
   It would be very useful to set a baseline grid that applies to a specific master page, or to a whole section.

3. End-notes and Footnotes URLS

   I do a lot of books for Print and digital (pdf and ePub). End-notes have always been a problem, even now that Indesign supports End-notes.

   For PDF and ePub export , in order to have the end-note reference clickable to redirect the user to it's corresponding end-note, then a link back again, I have to do this manually.

   This is a massive manual process...

   1. Let's say I have 100 end-notes. With each end-note reference, I have to place a new 'Hyperlink Destination' (for the return link)... That's going through the document, and placing 100 hyperlink destinations.

   2. Then, I go to each end-note and I place both a 'hyperlink destination', then a 'new hyperlink' back to the end-notes reference (text anchor created when I added the hyperlink destination). So I'm now up to 300 manual urls/destinations I've had to create.

   3. Now to finish, I now go back to each end-note reference and create a new hyperlink to it's corresponding end-note (text anchor).

   So now I've had to add 400 links/destinations manually. It would be soooo nice that, just like the Table of Contents which auto creates urls to it's corresponding list items, that footnotes and end-notes would automatically create reciprocal URLS.

4. Enable easy batching of GREP Find/Change queries & expandable 'entry window'

   Hi there,

   Rather than rely on third-party software (or convoluted scripts), there should be an option to batch GREP queries together in the Find/Change menu.

   Also, it would be nice (for more extensive/complicated GREPs) to be able to expand the window in general (pertaining to both Find/Change's GREP tab and the equivalent menu for GREP styles elsewhere) when entering the expressions.

   As an addendum to that last point, at the very least InDesign should have a built in (expandable) panel for copying and pasting complicated GREP syntax without having to worry about certain syntax items disappearing if copied and pasted elsewhere for review/edit outside of the tiny text window within the current UI. I'm aware of RegExr and it works okay, but this should really be built in (or even better, allow the window to expand as suggested above).

5. Allow ignoring white spaces in Find/Replace

   it would be good if, the same way you can select "Case sensitive" in the find/replace, you could select "ignore white spaces" or "special characters" and only finds plain text with normal spaces.

   For example, if you try to find a sentence that has non-breaking spaces, n-spaces, manual line breaks, etc, unless you add all those characters codes to the find field, InDesign won't be able to find the text. If you were able to ignore all those "special" characters you could find and replace the whole sentence with the text you want with normal spaces.

   This would be really useful in the translation industry where many times whole sentences need to be replaced by copy and paste from a Word document once the text is already laid out and formatted.

6. EPUB CSS output could be improved quite a lot

   So I’m currently in charge of Readium CSS, which is a project related to Readium 2 (link: https://github.com/readium/readium-2), a complete rewrite of Readium SDK, which you may know in the form of a Chrome app – this Chrome app is actually advised by InDesign engineers in the InDesign forums whenever a rendering issue pops up so I assume InDesign engineers know it exists.

   Unfortunately, there are a lot of CSS issues piling up right now and InDesign’s output could really do with some significant improvements to allow for better cross-platform support and rendering. Indeed, Readium 2/CSS is meant to be used with any stack/rendering engine, so it won’t be tied to Webkit, and that changes the situation quite a lot.

   I won’t necessarily go into details since the User Experience of posting this idea is abysmal (can see like 5 lines of text right now and I can’t expand the textarea) but here’s some issues for which a fix would be greatly appreciated:

   1. if you’re outputting prefixed properties, please output all necessary prefixed properties and the standard one. It’s indeed been a bad practice to not do so and it creates severe maintenance issues for Reading Systems over the long term (for vertical writing in Japanese for example, we’ll have to pre-process stylesheets and add the missing CSS properties so that it can render well on all platforms);

   2. for transforms, which are sometimes used for objects (scaled, rotated, etc.), I can’t guarantee rendering will be OK, especially as only some prefixed CSS properties are output (Kobo now has a specific guideline addressing this issue);

   3. more generally, the default for objects’ output (e.g. images), with the container sized using pixels values, is plain wrong – it only works because we have safeguards to deal with it, so that images don’t become a huge mess. Same for iBooks BTW, which even have a specific CSS declaration in its default stylesheet just because of that.

   4. absolute positioning, which is sometimes used for objects with several images/frames, is explicitly discouraged in the EPUB spec itself for reflowable text so you should assume it will create rendering issues in at least some Reading Systems;

   5. the way embedded fonts are output (font-family) is wrong, and puts a burden upon other authors.

   6. if color is black, you don’t need to output it (Kindle even had to take the liberty of sanitizing this declaration so that it doesn’t create issues in night mode i.e. it removes it entirely).

   7. absolutely-positioned <span> in fixed-layout is now strongly discouraged in the iBooks guidelines because it breaks search and selection (providing users with a subpar UX).

   8. you export several languages in metadata and this is fine. However, we have a spec issue there: there is nothing to define which language is the primary language of the publication, which can create significant edge cases (iBooks, for instance, defines the last language item as the primary language for the publication, which means it may lay out an english book right to left if the last item happens to be arabic because there are arabic characters here and there).

   There’s more but listing them there is quite uncomfortable. So please feel free to contact me by mail if you’re willing to improve the current output. That would indeed benefit the whole ecosystem, given InDesign is quite ubiquitous in publishing, and I’ll be glad to help.

7. Annoying new InDesign CC behavior 5/2018....

   When replacing text by highlighting the text and then typing new text, InDesign misses the first letter of new typing, every time. I'm sure it was not always this way. It is annoying, to say the least, and could easily lead to typographical errors from words missing their initial letters, if it does not get caught. No other software that I use works this way. Please look into this bug!

8. CC asset anchored inline with text should change size with font in reflowable epub

   For CC library assets anchored inline with text, can these be made to accomodate font size choices in reflowable epubs?

   Jutoh is supposed to be able to do this, but I can't quite get it.

   So far I cannot see how to make an asset, a tiny image to suit 12 point original font, change if the e reader changes font size.

   Creating my assets was many steps also, and I figured it out with unfortunately no luck finding steps in the forum. But they work perfectly InDesign and also Affinity Publisher. They also change size of course manually in the document with no loss. Thank you!

11. Artifacting Master Page Items—accessibility

    Within the past year, Adobe InDesign changed the way it handles items on a master page when the file is exported to accessible PDF.

    We used to be able to control each MP item and designate whether it was artifacted or kept live and tagged in the PDF reading orders. BUT, in recent versions of InDesign, EVERYTHING on the MP is automatically artifacted and we have no control over this.

    This fowls up workflows where some MP items must be kept live, tagged, and in the PDF's reading order, such as the project I'm working (series of fact sheets for a university) where the organization's name and contact into is repeated (hence, on a master page) and needs to be kept live and tagged (not artifacted).

    Give us back our control! Although most MP items should be artifacted, it's not ALL MAP items should be artifacted. Let us keep some items tagged and control their reading order in the PDF.

    "Releasing" the items from the MP when I'm on the document page isn't the solution; it defeats the reason why we have MP in the first place.

    And fixing the problem after the PDF is made isn't a solution, either.

    Solution:
    1) In each Master Page's options, give us a checkbox option to artifact everything on that MP or not, and
    2) Give us back our "granular" control to artifact frames (Object Export Options) and text (Artifact in Export Tag settings).

12. Rule Above/Rule Below dialog

    Please make both Rule Above and Rule Below visible at the same time, rather than toggling between them. Oftentimes, both are used in conjunction with each other. And there's plenty of room to do so. If need be, the Keep in Frame checkbox can be moved up next to the button for rule on/off.

13. keyboard shorcuts for pdf comments

    would be great if we could use the standard way of copying text - double click then ctrl c - for copying text from the pdf comment field, instead of having to swipe over the text and wait for the popup and then click on the popup. Also would be great if we could delete comments with a shortcut, (delete key maybe?) instead of having to use the little drop down menu. This would make working with comments much more efficient.

14. Black only crops

    When printing or exporting to a pdf file for print, can we have an option of black only crop marks. The reason is when we print to our Xerox Igen 4 and there is a mixture of color and black and white pages, the pages with just black text register as color because of the registration colored crop marks and on large runs it can add up to a lot of money. Thank you.

15. The ability to make text invisible or 'replacing' it with '___' using the Character Style

    I recently worked with a publication that needed to hide part of the text in different places. The full text also had to be shown next to it.
    It would be possible to arrange this by means of GREP-styles, if it were possible to use some kind of pseudo font with zero character width or something like.
    Also it would be useful having an opportunity visually replace any symbol with underline (such an idea is often using in a language textbooks) using character styles.

16. STYLE support for run-in (aka in-line) headings

    Currently there is no Style setting that can produce a run-in heading. This is a very widely used style in documents using more than 2-3 heading levels, and I have needed it for years now.

    NOTE: Using Nested Styles does not fulfill the need for run-in headings. Using a nested style is a work-around based on character styles, and this technique does not allow a heading to be "promoted" or redesigned!

    A quick solution:

    Create a new Style setting checkbox to be used by the run-in heading style: "Run-in". When checked, the paragraph is given 0 leading, and its total length from the left margin is saved globally as "lastLineLength" or some such. The user can append a fixed-space character to the end of the heading text to control the spacing before the next paragraph's text begins.

    Create a new Style setting checkbox to be used by Body styles: "Allow run-in heads". When checked, the first line indent setting is ignored, and the effective first line indent is set to the global lastLineLength value.

    The type size and Space Before of the heading would also automatically override the settings of the following paragraph.

    When a run-in heading is actually a real heading, then the user can promote this heading to one that is formatted differently. With nested styles, that can't be done because the heading text is embedded in a paragraph of some other style.

    Please bring InDesign up to date by implementing real run-in Paragraph Styles. Numerous professional style guides will finally be much easier to support.

17. place multi-page illustrator

    Feature or Script request:

    1. Place multi-page (multi artboard) files in InDesign with similar auto flow feature as Shift+Place Autoflow Text when Pasting.

    2. Paste multiple Illustrator files at one time with autoflow. For example: 3 separate Illustrator files with 3 artboards each. Script would place each of the 9 artboards on consecutive pages while maintaining the image box size and fill attributes of a user created image box.

    3. Dialogue box to select which artboards are to be placed & layer visibility (similar to current place Illustrator file function). This might only work when a single file is being placed.

18. Make "split column" widths flexible

    I use split-and-span columns frequently in my work. Often, with lists of names, I'll have that one name in a column that is just too long and wants to wrap. If I could adjust the column width after using the split-columns, that would be very helpful. As it is, I either have to decrease the type size or increase the right side margin, which messes with the body text width. I don't want to create a separate text frame as this is too common an occurrence in my work, and I'd have to be dragging and anchoring all over the place. This request may be impractical in terms of backroom coding of InDesign, but if it isn't, maybe someone can try?

19. Preflight Profile for Accessibility

    Add options to run accessibility checks in InDesign. Acrobat already has the ability to run an accessibility check. It would be so helpful to be able to run a preflight check for issues (e.g., alt text, table headers) before exporting.

20. Place Gun Enhancement

    We use InDesign in our printing department to place images for printing on our Epson Printers.
    At the moment we have page templates with Auto-Fit frames placed and ready to accept the various sizes of supplied images (clients always manage to supply images to the wrong dimensions).

    Here's what we do :
    1. Call up a template.
    2. CMD-D to load the Place Gun with multiple files (anything from 2 to 50 - sometimes more).
    3. Click in each frame to place the loaded images.

    Here's where I believe the procedure could be enhanced - in fact it's the only hold up in the whole process.

    The only option currently available to the Place Gun is to click inside an existing frame and place the image.
    But often the file is portrait when the frame is landscape (or visa versa).

    What would be brilliant is if a modifier key could be assigned to change the orientation of the placed file so that when you click it automatically goes into the frame at 90 (or even -90) degrees.

    Hope this makes sense.

    The modifier key should also work if the Place Gun is loaded without frames having been created.
    So a click and drag with the modifier key pressed would place the image at 90 degrees to it's normal orientation.

    Sure I'm not the only one who would find this useful.
    Or maybe that should read - hopeful that I'm not the only one who would find this useful !!
