Make "Paste without formatting" work for any type of text in clipboard
If I want to paste text into InDesign and use the destination formatting rather than whatever the source is, I'm hard-wired to use "ctrl + shift + V". However it appears that if the contents of the clipboard are plain text, this command isn't available, presumably because InDesign thinks it's not necessary.
This means that the interface is inconsistent, because sometimes you need ctrl + V and sometimes you need ctrl + shift + V, depending on what's on the clipboard.
The option should always be available so that if you want plain text you can use the ctrl + shift + V shortcut, regardless of whether it's technically necessary.

Tables & Graphs
I would love to have a new tab added in InDesign where you sort of had pre-made templates for graphs and tables and then could modify as needed once inserted into the document. I create many documents that often call for tables and graphs and have to start from scratch and spend sometimes hours perfecting it. It would save so much time to not only have pre-made templates, but also templates we could create ourselves and save and re-insert and populate with new data. And I'd like to have pie charts and other graphs in a similar fashion as well.

It happens to have a color in the color palette that we do not know where it is placed in the document because it's not visible. It would be useful for InDesign to select it and show you where it is.

Desaturate-filter / Black&White adjustment-layer on photos/graphics
A simple and proper way to desaturate photos/graphics to greyscale using pure black.
Also, a Black&White adjustment-layer on photos/graphics to output greyscale using rich black.

Linking to Excel files
It would be nice if one could link to an Excel file during placement rather than having to change the preferences on and off.
Also, it would be nice if InDesign remembered how many rows were marked as header rows when updating linked files.

Indic Unicode font rendering is broken in InDesign
When writing text in certain Indic scripts, InDesign does not render the font correctly. For example, using the Padauk font for the Myanmar script, the following string renders the Medial Ra (U+103C) around the consonant Na (U+1014) instead of the consonant Ma (U+1019).
မြန်
This bug is a large blocker when dealing with Indic text in InDesign.

I want a generic command to repeat the least command I executed. Like control-Y does in the much-hated MS Word....Saves time.
I want a generic command to repeat the least command I executed. Like control-Y does in the much-hated MS Word....Saves time.
I often wind up doing the same thing many times, like applying a char style or whatever. I want a keyboard shortcut to repeat whatever I did last.

Appearance Panel
Illustrator has the Appearance Panel. InDesign should have it too. I want to have multiple fills, and strokes to be behind the fills.

Batch Single Page PDF Creation
Please add an option to export ranges of pages as single page PDF files from Indesign like Illustrator(save individual artboards). This would simplfy sending pages to assembly station for imposition and corrections afterward.
12 votesHi All, this feature is now available in the latest version of InDesign i.e. InDesign 13.1
Kindly update InDesign to get access to this feature.

Send Assignment Notifications to InCopy Users
It would be nice if InDesign/InCopy sent notifications whenever an assignment was created. Otherwise, I have no idea I have a copy assignment waiting for me unless I'm constantly checking the assignment folder to see if our marketing director has assigned anything to me. Currently, he relies on email or phone to alert me that a new assignment has been created.

More control with paragraph shading
I would like more control over the space insets in the paragraph shading options. When a long paragraph of text flow on to the next page there is no way to control the spacing above (padding) when we're in the middle of the paragraph and "clip to frame" is checked. It is possible to get away with it if the distance from the top-margin and the first baseline is sufficient, but most of the time I want more space. I think it would be better if the text was forced down to the second baseline if necessary. The end goal is to have the same amount of space above the text where the shaded paragraph starts and where it continues on the next page. This looks better. See the attached file.

Replace all missing glyphs
Option in the find replace dialogue to replace all missing glyphs, not just swapping one glyph for another. As far as I know, you have to go one by one throughout a document. The find/replace Opentype feature (text tab hasn't worked for me either.)

Proper export format for Webdesign
Since Indesign gets all the functionalities for webdesign : effects, objects styles, text and pargraph styles, interactivity, links, tempaltes...
It would be great to be able to export designs to HTML/CSS in a real and proper way (not the nowadays export).
Or, an export to PSD, at least.12 votes -

Create a more functional font menu please!
Make the fonts menu more functional.
Show larger font samples
Let user see selected text or custom text as sample text (instead of just using "sample")
Ability to sort between serif, san-serif, decorative, handwritten, etc. Even if this means user needs to create "tags" to organize their own font libraries.See the typekit website or any website that sells fonts. Do it like that.

Expand Support for Typesetting in Arabic and Other Right-to-Left Languages
My company does a lot of design work that has to do with getting information about public health and safety to audiences for whom English is not a first language. Clear, careful communication of these topics and issues to all people—in their native languages—is essential. It ensures that everyone has the same access to information about their health and well-being.
When we translate our designs, that often includes languages that read from right to left, like Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew. However, there is currently no reasonable method for working with right-to-left text in InDesign for designers who work with both kinds of text. All the solutions currently available are clunky workarounds. Even with those workarounds, setting right-to-left text is still very difficult, so the margin for error working with text in these languages is still very high. That means the people who speak these languages are more likely than native english speakers to receive inaccurate information.
One solution is to download the Middle East version of Indesign, but that solution is only temporary because that version of the program doesn't handle Latin characters correctly. You have to constantly uninstall and reinstall the correct version for the language you are working with, which is not a viable option for projects that use both kinds of language.
Please integrate functionality for right-to-left typesetting in the English (North America) version of InDesign and, in general, expand language support for all languages within the software. I guarantee there are many designers who struggle with this issue but who are quietly putting up with the workarounds. Meanwhile, people who speak languages other than english are less likely to receive reliable, accurate information that is critical to their lives in their own, native tongue.
