Track Changes Visible/Printable in Layout View
The ability to view and print tracked changes in layout view for InDesign and InCopy would be an epic game-changer. Workarounds become tedious (especially when working with large publications) and plug-ins become outdated.

Allow Open Office files to be imported
Open office is a popular format but indesign doesn't have a filter to let them be imported. All our contributors use Open Office but the only way I can import them is to open them up, copy and paste - and lose all formatting. Not EVERYTHING has to revolve around Microsoft, surely?

Please bring back mini bridge.
Mini bridge was a great feature. Using Bridge inside of Indesign saved a lot of time and frustration with messy images files from clients.

Increase Default Offset crop marks to .125 in
When you create a PDF from InDesign, the Default Offset for the Marks and Bleeds is .0833 in. Why is that, when the usual minimum bleed is .125 in. Yes, we can change it. But do you know how many people change it? ...not many.

Column rules
I think Column Rules in the Text Box dialog would be a winner. Easily add a vertical rule to left, right and mid gutter.
16 votesWe added Column Rules functionality in InDesign 2020. Please try it out.

Will it soon be possible to add gradients as well as color swatches to the CC Libraries?
We need to import gradients to CC libraries in InDesign as well to provide more detailed design-guideline components for our brands. Will there be a possibility soon? Kind regards:)

Paragraph Borders: Inset vs Offset or "Keep Within Frame"
LOVE that borders and shading are now built into paragraph styles; but, I would like to be able to create a paragraph border with an inset (instead of an offset), or something like the "keep in frame" option for paragraph rules. The result is a paragraph outline in line with the other paragraphs above and below it, but with an inset paragraph inside the border.

Index / Table of Contents
When creating an Index, you are limited to populate ONLY one Index style format. MS Word, it is greatly inferior program, and yet you can create a General Index, a Index of Cases and Index of Figures. Indesign is the leading industry program for designers and writers, NOT MS word.
What happens if have lots of illustrations, data tables graphs and flowcharts all numbered accordingly. For example, an illustration (Figure 20 or Table 7), maybe on page 40, but there are 40 mentions throughout the document. Thus, in Indesign, you can not create a proper index list every page number of Figure 20, or a table etc. If you to want create more Indexes like the Index format, you CANNOT, you are forced to use the Table of Contents style.
We are in a climate where there is a strong demand for indexes that best help our customers to locate information in the books and magazines we produce.
We need to improve the Index function with the ability to create multiple Indexes, that follow the actual Index format (not the Table of Contents Format). If you use Peter Kahrel’s script or IndexMatic they are very limited what you can do. IndexMatic creates a concordance and Peter;s Script uses the Topic area, mixing in or amalgamating all the indexes. It ends up being messy.
Let's do this — update the program

I hate the "Search is completed" or "Cannot find match" messages after searches
Specifically I hate having to click OK to close the message.
Could the same messages just appear in the search window itself instead of the current alert? Maybe with color to make it obvious?16 votes -
CMYK to RGB export should always translate 100K to RGB 0,0,0
As per the title, when working with a CMYK document with 100K blacks, when exporting to RGB, these should always get translated to RGB 0,0,0 - regardless of what Printing/Exporting setting is used in the Appearance of Black preference menu.
Right now, when exporting a CMYK document to RGB (regardless of whether you use PDF, PNG or JPG), if your Appearance to Black Print/Export setting is set to "Output All Blacks Accurately", you will end up with incorrect black levels. What really should be RGB 0,0,0 ends up being RGB 35,31,32 or so. This is true even when working with 1-bit bitmaps (which are nothing but pure black & white).
This can be fixed by changing Appearance of Black - Print/Export to "Output All Blacks as Rich Black" - blacks end up being proper RGB 0,0,0 black - but it really should work like this regardless of what the Appearance of Black settings are set at.
A couple samples:
"Accurate" blacks PNG: https://my.mixtape.moe/metyyt.png
Rich blacks PNG: https://my.mixtape.moe/bpgnib.png
"Accurate" blacks PDF: https://my.mixtape.moe/qjqcfv.pdf
Rich blacks PDF: https://my.mixtape.moe/rrhaig.pdfAgain, the "accurate" black exports should really look the same as the rich black exports by default - black should be proper RGB 0,0,0 black, instead of somewhere around ~32,32,32.

Pattern support
I am surprised pattern support has not arrived for InDesign yet. I would like to be able to pick a repeating pattern or drop a png of a pattern in and select to repeat it vertically and/or horizontally within a frame.

Ability to specify a baseline start in a Paragraph style
Would like to use a Paragraph style to be able to set the first line of a paragraph to a specific baseline. For example, on a page like this the first paragraph also needs to start on the same baseline, but there wouldn’t always be a byline, so I would need to make another, or multiple, Paragraph styles for the main head (“Foreword”) in order to sink the first paragraph to the same baseline.
