  1. Allow for bullet numbers to display both left AND right

I am a script editor, and formatter. I'd like to be able to create script heading styles that are industry standard. This involves have the scene heading number (which can be styled as a bullet) both on the left AND right of the page. ie 'both' sides. Current we can only style them on the left (unless there's a way to do this I'm not aware of?).

  2. Generative AI features for document design and styles application/revision

When can we expect some more comprehensive/advanced baked-in AI features in InDesign? E.g. apply this doc's formatting to this unformatted one, apply these styles likewise for the next 40pgs, take my branding library and apply it to this new doc, review this doc and flag stylistic inconsistencies, etc. Seems like when and not if. Looking forward to the day!

  3. Real time Collaboration on a single file

    Problem:
If DIFFERENT USERS need to work on the same file AT THE SAME TIME.

    Goal:
Two or more users working on real time on the same file.

    Currently:
they need to save a copy of the parent file and then merge them into one unified file.

    Solution:
With this new feature, only elements touched by each user would be locked for the rest. By saving the document would mean to release all objets and send updates to be visible to everyone.

This is really important to create solid workflows and to avoid potential mistakes while merging files if two…

  4. Improving the various options of footnotes

In one of the latest versions of InDesign, endnotes have undergone a significant upgrade as they have become live endnotes than static endnotes. But unfortunately, the footnotes are left far behind.
We really ask that you rewrite the footnote feature so that the following features are possible:
    1) Select all the footnotes at once (by Cmd + A or Ctrl + A)
    2) Option to split footnotes into a number of columns is different from the main text (not just span footnotes but complete control over the number of columns)
    3) Continuous footnotes in the same paragraph (run-in).
    4) Possibility…

  5. Hit double space bar to ad period at the end of a sentence

It would come in handy if this was available in Indesign like on your iPhone when you tab double space bar a period appears.

  6. When you create a new layer, it should be selected

It doesn't make any sense to create a new layer and not have it selected. Obviously, if I'm creating a new layer, I want to put stuff on it. Make newly created layers selected automatically. For once, Illustrator gets this right and InDesign gets it wrong.

  7. Conversion of Text Encoding

    1. InDesign is missing a built-in function to convert different Chinese text encoding, e.g. Big5 to GBK or vice versa

    2. Right now, the only way to do it is to do the conversion of encoding elsewhere and paste the text back in InDesign. But then all formatting will be lost

  8. "Indent to here" from the right side

it would be very helpful if, beside the option "indent to here", there is another optione to set a "indent to here from the right side".
For Example if i have a text, where the last two words in the last line should be on the right side, but no text above should go as far as this two words .

  9. Duplex options in print dialog

I would like to be able to set duplex on / off and flip direction in the print dialog.

How it is currently setup, I have to change the printer, click "Setup..." which gives a warning about settings conflicts, click "OK", change the printer again (because I'm not using the default), scroll down to "More Settings", click "More Settings", navigate the HP print settings to adjust duplex settings, click "ok", click "print"

I would like the duplex settings brought out to the main print dialog because going through about 10 steps to change 2 settings is a huge waste of…

  10. Provide Mac Pages files to be imported in InDesign.

I layout books, flyers, brochures, anything that have to be printed. I do that since InDesign V2.0 – Mac OS 9. A big bunch of the people in the publicity, editing and publishing industries work on Macs. I'm still very surpised that InDesign did not yet provide import capability for Mac Pages native files in InDesign. – So I do what I have to do… Open the Pages file, export it to a Micosoft Word file (your all time friend), an then import the Word file I have to work with in InDesign. I'm sure you all know that. I do…

  11. Drag Edited Images in Lightroom Directly to InDesign which automates Export and Creates Shadow File Folder Structure of Edited Files.

Drag Edited Images in Lightroom Directly to InDesign which automates Export and Creates "Shadow File Folder Structure" of Exported Edited Files. This would allow easy Image Navigation for visually identifying assets from Lightbox environment and directly linking them to INDD files without the cumbersome and redundant step of Exporting and then searching for exported file in FINDER. This is a no brainer for LR IND Integrated workflows! Please prioritize!

  12. Editable SVG graphics from CC Libraries within InDesign

Being able to import and edit SVG graphics from CC Libraries within InDesign.

For instance, a company has 200+ icons that they use on documents.
Being able to edit within InDesign, after placing the icon from CC library, to edit colours or backgrounds that the SVG is on.

CURRENTLY available to do within XD and Illustrator, but directly within InDesign, would be AMAZING....

  13. Update links with custom settings

When opening a document and InDesign asks if links should be updated, there should be a choice for linked files only. When using alternate layouts, e.g. with an A4 and a Letter instance, the line breaks will be manually adjusted. So when the file is opened and all links are updated (because maybe images and charts used in both formats were updated), the manual changes in the linked texts of the alternate format are gone.

  14. ignore text boxes filled with placeholder text during spell check

If you fill a text box from the 'fill with placeholder text' function perhaps it could be highlighted a different colour or have a symbol on the edge which highlights this, and can be ignored during the spell check function. it's super frustrating to have to keep clicking ignore on lorem ipsum!

  15. Indesign Share for Review User/Stakeholder UI experience

I am finding a lot of user error on my stakeholder's side when it comes time for them to review.

I think some basic information should pop up on how to leave a proper comment when they first access the review or fix it so it is always default to highlight/strikethrough.

For example: They can leave a regular comment just fine, however, I have no idea where in the text the change should be because they don't highlight the text first then click the tool needed. It's a simple step for people who are familiar with these reviews but some…

  16. Conditional no-break in character styles

I want an option to make no-break in character style, but if it's impossible to keep text in frame, breaking would be possible.
For example, usually I don't want to break a hyperlink in text and if I make it no breaking, very long URL's makes it impossible to keep text running in text frames.
I think there is a workaround with GREP's but that's not really solid solution for this.

  17. Multi Level Object Lock

Instead of faffing around with Layers, it would sometimes be handy to quickly be able to lock objects at multiple levels, so that when you want to unlock a specific object on a specific layer, it doesn't unlock every layer.

For example if you have 3 objects overlaying each other you could lock the lowest object by holding 'Ctrl' and tapping 'L' 3 times, twice for the second layer, etc.

To unlock, 'Ctrl' + 'Shift' + 'L', tapping L as many times as required depending on the layer.

  18. Locked Content — Functionality Request

SUBJECT — Locked Content on InDesign Pages

    • InDesign — version 17.3

This request applies to when an InDesign page has locked content — in other words, when multiple text boxes and image boxes and other page elements are all locked.

    • When an InDesign page has multiple text boxes and image boxes that are locked, often enough I want to access only one of the locked text boxes to make a simple change to the text.

    • Currently, in order to access that textbox to make the change, the quickest way I've found requires me to unlock the ENTIRE…

  19. An AI procedure/tool creates design variations across disparate custom page sizes in a document.

In a document that has multiple pages, where each page has different custom dimensions, what if there were an AI tool that used elements from page 1 to create adapted layouts for the remaining pages of the document?

You could include a few parameters, like whether or not to allow text smaller than agate text, or to allow new margins to be established vs honoring the document settings for margins, etc. Perhaps a disclaimer flag for elemetns that are small print text and could be omitted from smaller ad sizes.

The procedure/tool could consider heirachy based on size, color, brightnes…

  20. InDesign home screen options

It would be great if on the InDesign home screen you could:
    • sort recent jobs by name
    • display preview icons at different sizes, and

    • have an X to remove a file from your recent jobs preview list.
