I experience the same problem and have for at least a year. Are you still reviewing this?

I can report that issue is still present in v 15.0.2 in macOS 10.14.6. The main frustration is launching the application, using Cmd-O to open a doc or Cmd-N to create a new doc and getting nothing until clicking anything within the app (menu, panel, whatever). Maddening.

Variable Font support has been implemented in InDesign 2020. Please upgrade to this version of InDesign to use this feature.

Variable fonts offer the kind of nuanced adjustment to type that InDesign has always pioneered. It is an obvious and suitable addition. Odd that it's in Photoshop and Illustrator first--exceedingly odd that it's in those and *not* in InDesign.

We have added this feature in our backlog for future release

Captions and running headers/footers that use variables should wrap. It'd be so handy

With InDesign 16.2.1 the problem remains. It's clearly triggered by InDesign's failure to load the fonts from the "Document fonts" folder into the font menu list in the Control panel. I have many fonts installed (and Adobe fonts activated), likely exacerbating the issue, but I need those. I guess that ID times out and gives up switching to the Type tool and reverts to the previous tool.
Workaround: install the fonts in the Document fonts folder (if they're not already), then rename or delete that folder. Hopefully, the root cause is discovered and corrected.
