Type tool still deselects itself InDD 15.0.1
The bug has been already reported, it's been claimed to be fixed in 14.0.1, but actually still persists and never was corrected.
Typing "T" just selects the type tool very briefly, then changes back to the previous tool. Clicking inside a text frame has the same result, even if you get to select some part of the text, it just changes back tot he previous tool in most of the cases. The only way to get it work, is to select the tool in the sidebar, however even there it takes several seconds to become active.
Using InDD 15.0.1 on a Mac Pro, MacOS 10.13
Thanks for reporting the issue. We are reviewing it
At the top right, there is a gear icon. Click that and under Character, uncheck the Character Fonts option. This fixed it for me.
I've read this *may* have been fixed in the latest update, can anyone confirm? I'm not in a country that's been graced with the rollout yet. Thank you!

Why is this still not fixed?
Please fix it!
Problem still persists, please prioritize this Adobe, this is a production killer. Running v 15.0.2
Adobe, you must solve the problem asap!
This crazy bug appeared again with the latest update 15.0.2 x64. InDesign is still freezing while the type tool is selected.

I'm seemingly having the same issue as one of the Anon comments below - documents created in older versions seem to blow out everything. A new document opened from a fresh opening of inDesign seems to work ok. Opening a 'broken' document and then copying the content across to the new one seems to allow it to work ok.
Opening an old 'broken' document first will pretty much make inDesign unusable. Even for any new documents that get created afterwards. It's like the old document is consuming all available resources (not related to anything seen in the task manager etc, I just mean it as a turn of phrase).
I'm working on Windows 10, 64GB RAM (if that helps, that's what Adobe Support asked me for when I chatted online with them).
PLEASE find out what's going on here. For many of us, this is our job and we can't bill our clients 4x the time because the software we're supposed to be using doesn't function as advertised.
I'm having the opposite problem, mine won't stop being selected even if I change to any of the selection tools, the preview modes, esc key etc. URGH!

I'm having the same issue InDesign version 15.0.2. I'll press the type tool and it'll activate and deactivate. During the time of its activation it will not allow me to draw a text box.
I am having the same issue with the text tool not becoming active for 40-50 seconds at random times. I am running Windows 10 using Indesign 15.0.2.

I'm still having the problem in InDesign 15.0.2 running on Windows 10 Pro.

Still experiencing this issue as well. Huge impact on efficiency.
I am having this issue as well. Windows 10 Pro.
February 20th 2020 and the problem still exists.
This is still a problem. I think it occurs when files created in older versions of indesign are edited in newer versions, but that is just a guess. I'm using 15.0.1 on MacOS 10.14.6 Mojave.

I confirm that the problem still exists in InDesign 15.0.1. My computer runs Windows 10 Pro.
