This should absolutely be fixed. I've been using InDesign for years including lots of advanced features, but I didn't know for the longest time that the preferences panel mysteriously affects both the program and individual files.

Would love to see an overhaul of the preferences. But this would be a great first step. Good suggestion Mike!

document specific preferences shouldn't be in application preferences at all!
it should be moved to Document settings dialog.Maybe that's why here is only 87 votes.

A great idea. Would definitely help with some of the users I train.

I don’t understand why this feature is missing. I think it is essential.

Agree. Preferences need better descriptions.
I'd like to see hyphenation in the Preferences. I've tried to get rid of it by setting it to off with no document open but it doesn't go away.

52 votes in UserVoice? That has to be a new record! 🤣 Sorry, with all the "I can't believe [CC App] doesn't [thing it should have done long ago]!!" rants on the support forum you'd think the UV votes would be piling up in droves. This is a really good one, and it has a whole 52 people behind it.
In fairness to users, they really make this hard to find but the developers don't even glance at the support forums.

I vote for this too. And maybe Adobe could add an option for the user to decide if the specific preference is only applied to the document or globally.
