No keyboard focus on launch
InDesign 14.0.1.209, macOS Mojave 10.14.2
When launched and the following conditions hold, InDesign does not seem to have keyboard focus (i.e.., no keyboard shortcuts work):
- Show ‘Start’ Workspace When No Documents Are Open is unticked.
- The Control bar is open in the default workspace.
- The CC Libraries panel is either not in the default workspace or collapsed.
Note that conditions 2 and 3 are met by several of the standard workspace, for example both Advanced and Typography (but not Book, Essentials or Essentials Classic).
If you choose a menu item or click in an input field, the app gains keyboard focus. Otherwise you seem to be able to type endlessly without any discernible effect.
The issue has been fixed in the latest release of InDesign – InDesign 2021.
Please update to this new version of InDesign to get the fix.

Upgraded to 16.0 and the bug is still there.
Is it related to another setting maybe?Indesign 16.0 - MacOS 10.15.7

I experience the same problem and have for at least a year. Are you still reviewing this?

Same issue here. ID 15.1.1, Mac OSX 10.13.6.
Cmd+O, Cmd+N or other keyboard shortcuts just work after opening a document or clicking in an input field.

I can report that issue is still present in v 15.0.2 in macOS 10.14.6. The main frustration is launching the application, using Cmd-O to open a doc or Cmd-N to create a new doc and getting nothing until clicking anything within the app (menu, panel, whatever). Maddening.

Same issue here. MacOS 10.14.6 and ID 15.0.1. At first I thought I had to open a document from the File menu to get the keyboard to work, but in fact clicking in an input field gives the keyboard focus.

Same issue here. No keyboard shortcuts whatsoever, until manually going through the menu. After that everything works just fine.

Is there an update on this? 2020 did not fix it.

Has this ever been resolved? After you've opened the first file manually with mouse n drop down menu the shortcut works fine but not before.

Same issue here.
InDesign CC2019, version 14.03.
Mac OS X 10.14.6The bug is present from the first version of InDesign CC2019. As others comment, I need to manually select a menu —create a new document, for example— to gain access to the keyboard shortcuts.

I heard that behavior now for more people.
As i investigated, shortcuts work again after using a menu entry once.
Please fix it. -

After installing the latest Patch for Script UI fixing for 14.0.2 (https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/Script-UI-dialog-issue.html) the shortcuts Cmd + N (New document) & CMD + O (Open document) [may be some more] are not working anymore on my machine, most time (sometimes works, i don't know why)
Running on macOS 10.12.6.
Thanks

Try a computer restart. Worked for me! (I'm the same "Anonymous" that commented below.)

This is happening no matter what version of INDD I am using! On new docs and old, even opening idml files.
Regular, assigned (both ID and my custom) keyboard shortcuts work, but not the keyboard focus shorts.
MacOSHighSierra, ID 12, 13, and 14, on different hard drives, under two different startup disks. Just started today. What's going on????? -

Have the same issue with the additions of not being able to use the delete button or zoom in and out using CTRL+ and -.

Changing #1 helped me and I have my keyboard shortcuts back. Never have heard of "Keyboard focus" before. I guess you have to learn new terminology to use this program. What is the "control bar"? I also don't understand #3.

My setup did not meet condition 1, yet I still have the same problem. The lack of keyboard response is noticed after opening a document from a folder, while InDesign is already open, and also clicking on InDesign (multiple times) to get its attention. However, creating a new document does not appear to create this problem. If any kind of pop-up message happens within InDesign, then the keyboard issue is not present. Clicking on another app and then clicking back to InDesign will also clear the keyboard issue. Did some testing and found that matching condition 1 above appears to alleviate the problem for me. I'm using Windows 10.

Just wanted to say Command N also will not work for myself in the same situation as Brent with CC 2019.
