Fix for this issue is available in the latest InDesign version - InDesign 2023. The fix should solve most of the issues that were seen earlier.
A new option "Honor Text Indents in addition to Text Wrap" is introduced in Preferences > Composition dialog. It is turned ON by default for new documents created in ID2023. For documents created in previous InDesign versions, this option is turned off by default - which can be turned ON to see the improved behavior.
Please let us know how the fix is working for you.

Thanks for raising this feature ask. We are reviewing this
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedYes! And while you're at it, make it also possible to select multiple paragraphs or lines or words of text that are not connected.
(Sometimes it's good to borrow from Word).

Adobe InDesign teamAn error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedHello!
Test your software more before public release, it's expensive!
v15.1 introduces two bugs that crash the program in the middle of workflow (which for professionals usually has deadlines). One is a PNG related crash - still not fixed. (Asking to use beta software, which introduced potential new bugs, is not a fix.)
Other is - it just crashes without any message or dialog, while opening a INDD file (worked in previous version just fine).Going back to previous version - messaging client to extend deadline an hour or two.
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedYeah, this is related to PNGs as another user reports.
I removed all PNGs to test and it works.
I imagine converting them to JPG will make it work as well.

Yes, this is so annoying.
E.g. If I have a letter, tab character, letter, and then if I click on the tab character to insert a cursor, it will place the cursor on the left, next to letter, before the tab. It only places it to the right, when I move it extremely close to the right letter. This is different behavior from how it works in Word (I work a lot copying, editing and/or pasting between Word and InDesign) and is very annoying. It also used to different in InDesign a few years ago.
What I'm expecting in this case is, when I click on the left side of the tab character, the cursor should be placed before the tab and when I click right side, it should be placed after the tab character.
It's most noticeable for me with tabs, but it's also annoying with words like the OP says. I often must aim very carefully and several times to a text selection I intend.
Text selection is super easy in Word in comparison. It's not perfect, but if I want to select for example 3 full words, it's less aiming and precision required.
Please fix!
