Going a little beyond the initial request, it would be useful if title case followed the rules about which words are not to be capitalised: usually, articles, conjunctions and prepositions that do not occur as the first word in the title.

Great idea. We probably need to write up a list of rules unique to HTMLs.

The engineers working on Illustrator are now paying attention to its graphing function. The thread at illustrator.uservoice.com is called 'Improve Graph / Chart tool'. I think we are more likely to get results in Illustrator than in InDesign. You might want to read through the discussion there and see what you think.

There is a complex hack that will produce slanted labels that can be used as the header of a table but it is time consuming to produce and easy to forget if one isn't using it often. So, yes, this would be a great feature to have in ID's tables.

In the meantime, for those of us who can't stand using Bridge, Quick Look can be enabled for InDesign previews by Jenny Hofer's inddPreview (US$3.99).

Academic publishing in disciplines (e.g., Classics) that display a lot of short citations would find this useful.

As noted by Neat, support for improving the feature in Illustrator (Improve Graph / Chart tool) is growing and Adobe's engineers have been asking questions. I would suggest supporting the request for improvement in Illustrator or for a stand-alone app on that forum rather than pushing its inclusion in InDesign. With the improvements requested, linking and updating in InDesign wil be much easier.

I think this is more or less the same request as that found in 'Make InDesign be able to import/Export comments from/to PDF'. See the comments there. Here are brief responses to your questions.

[1] In my case, the comments are queries to authors (and occasionally to in-house acquiring editors) about apparent errors, ambiguous writing and preferences for presentation of material. There are no doubt work-flows where the comments would be sent to colleagues working on other aspects of a publication. But, the main purpose of exporting notes to PDF would be so page proofs containing the comments can be sent to authors and others without access to an in-house workflow based on InCopy and InDesign.

[2] The comments are not a response to comments from authors or reviewers as the latter would usually be incorporated into the document and a new set of proofs generated.

Something very like your suggestion, 'interactively layer the PDF edits … in this proofing copy' is under consideration as 'Make InDesign be able to import/Export comments from/to PDF'. Please add your vote to that request.

Your request for a 'proofing copy' I am not clear about. I do much the same sort of work as you and have found that the Book Panel, despite its many shortcomings, gives one adequate control of the pagination of exported proofs. Perhaps I don't understand what you want. Is it what we used to call galley proofs, i.e., proofs of material typeset but not paginated?

A graphing function in InDesign would indeed be a useful feature but, please do not emulate that found in Illustrator, as it is antiquated, badly designed software, unimproved in twenty years despite numerous requests and its well-known failings.

[1] needed to import a map generated by a website; would have preferred SVG but ended up using bitmap

    [2] needed to re-colour map

[3] document in which map is placed will be output to PDF for print and posting

Matthew, I can't duplicate what you are showing in the screen shot. Optical Margin Alignment doesn't seem to make a difference. In any case, I think you are raising a broader issue: the lack of intelligent underlining that applies the underline to words or numbers but leaves the spaces and punctuation in the selection untouched.

I understand the confusion and apologise for the same. Before we could get out the issues in a release we posted the workaround plugins for any users who were blocked due to the bugs.

We have now send out an update to all InDesign users which has those bug fixes in them. Again sorry for the inconvenience.

    Regards
    Javed
