InDesign performance issue: Text disappears while editing
When editing a text box, the text disappears.
I have to switch the display mode (Overview > Normal or Normal > Overview) to make the text appear again.
This bug occurs frequently (10~20 times a day) but I did not identify what is the trigger.
Version 2017.1
Build 12.1.0.56 x64
Windows 10 x64
We're happy to announce that the fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign - version 17.2 that is available to download from Creative Cloud Desktop application.
Please update to this latest InDesign version to get the fix.

it started happening to us in the office not long ago, may be a year or so and have "stayed" with us ever since, i always update the software so it hasn't been fixed. its very disturbing because you are in constant danger of losing part of your clients content. or are you? in any case, what happens is that when you make a change editing text all of the text in the specific box just disappears, but remains the same in all the other linked boxes of this text thread. it's like it becomes invisible, but i think it also wont show in a pdf if you save one. then if you resize the box even a tiny bit - open or close, it all comes back - and that's how we have been working for past few months.. correct me if i am wrong - this doesn't make any sense for a respected design app to behave this way, on topp of all the adobe crashing and freezing issues.

UPDATE #2: The problem is back. Again. The font validation process didn't fix the issue. PLEASE fix this persistent, time-wasting, mood-crushing bug, Adobe.

UPDATE: I used Chat to speak with Adobe Tech Support. Thanks to validating and deleting a problematic font, the issue now appears to be resolved!
Steps were: 1. Open FontBook, 2. Select all fonts, 3. Right-click and select Validate fonts, 4. Delete the font that was marked as having Issues. I deleted the font and then restarted InDesign and now the problem appears to be fixed. Even though this was not the typeface I was using in my layout, it caused this issue. (Prior to that, we went through renaming old caches and folders with a .old extension but this didn't fix the problem - it was deleting a font with an issue that solved it.)
Hope this is helpful! And thank you to Raghav at Adobe for helping me figure this out and solve the problem. -

I am having the same problem with type suddenly becoming invisible when editing text in a text box. When I resize the entire InDesign window, or just the text box, the type magically reappears. It's still there (you can highlight the invisible text) but it is not appearing on the screen. Which makes me wonder if it's a screen draw issue.
Like others have mentioned, this all started when I got a new iMac with the M1 chip.
I called Adobe Customer Support just now and the recommended fix was to uninstall then reinstall ID. Did that, it worked briefly, but now the same thing is happening again.
It's slowing down my work flow and extremely frustrating. Adobe: PLEASE HELP!

Indesign, as all Adobe tools, is not optimized for RAM usage or for Macs This is why the memory it uses from RAM and harddrive can be set up in the Preferences. If your system says it ran out of memory it's most likely just that. You can either increase your RAM - oh no, it's an Apple device, not possible to upgrade my RAM! - or ***** down the per centage.

Incredible that 4 years later this incredibly frustrating glitch is still an issue. M1 Mac Mini/Monterey.

I have this problem only with InDesign. When im working on something (doesn't even have to be a big project), my MacBook decides to crash. "Run out of application memory"
There are also more small bugs like text randomly disappearing etc.

Hi! This is happening to me every single time I try to edit text. I have a very large document and am making copy changes daily and this continues to happen. BRand new Macbook Pro with M1 chip (purchased May 2021). Does anyone know of a fix? I close everything down and restart my macbook, open Indesign, and it is still happening.

I assumed this was closed as it's so old- but as with others below I am also having this issue, although for me it seems to specifically be text within tables that randomly disappears. Incredibly frustrating, please fix it.

The text inside a table text box keeps disappearing at random whilst editing. The text is not overset- all text disappears. Only fix is either to scroll off the page with the box (if possible) or to double click the text box boundary. Incredibly frustrating when trying to edit anything.

Just upgraded to the new MacBook Air and am now experiencing this issue all the time while using inDesign. I can click out of the text box and move to a different page and back and it reappears but this is a ridiculous problem to have when you have a big pop up ad for how great id works on the new M1 chip!

I only just bought a new Macbook pro 2020 last week to upgrade from my Macbook air and was super excited for the new speed of the mac. But I use InDesign everyday for my job and text is just disappearing in and out as Im typing!!! This needs to be resolved!!!! It is slowing down my work and productivity I just can't deal with it!!! I see it has been an issue for a while..... so many designers are on Macs - whats happening?!?!

Same same same. Seriously can there be a resolve - MacBook Pro version working absolutely fine. New iMac M1 cannot type 2 letters without the text box disappearing, even when I touch the mouse the text is lost so either have to zoom out then back in or move the text box or change the font colour then change it back.
This is ridiculous and have deadlines to meet !! Please get this sorted ASAP!!! -

I'm also using an M1 Mac and thanks to this huge, obvious bug I can barely get any work done. This ought to be top priority for Adobe!

I just started a subscription to Adobe approximately 5 weeks ago on a brand new MacBook pro.
This bug is VERY frustrating as I've worked on a paid version of InDesign on an older MAC for years prior to now paying monthly for it.
This is happening to me almost every third time I change a word in a file. (11 Oct 2021) please help! -

I get this issue constantly and it is infuriating and really interrupts my workflow. Try flowing/amending text within a brochure when the text box disappears every time I type! Aaah!
