[ID-4257184]InDesign 2025(v20.0) Performance issues: Delay or beach balls on basic operations
Problem:
InDesign Performance issues: Delay or beach balls observed on basic operations on Macintosh
Steps to Reproduce:
No reliable reproducible steps
Impacted workflows:
- Switching to InDesign
- Open/Closing of Document
- Edit/Scroll/Copy-paste/Highlight operation on Text
- Text disappears, illustrations disappear
- Imported or added text turns black until a style is applied.
- Font menu highlight not following my mouse movement
- Text will not change fonts until I click the mouse inside or outside the text box.
- Resize a document window, the corner flies below the screen border
- Click or Drag of the mouse
- Switching between tools
- "Waiting for UXP plugins to finish up remaining tasks."
Workaround:
- Close the MAGNET application
- Revert to InDesign 19.5, No performance lag is observed.
- Restarting the machine and trashing the preferences seems to resolve the issue temporarily
- Disabling any font manager software seems to resolve the issue. One customer confirmed that disabling "Rightfont" resolved the issue.
- Uninstall-Reinstall seems to resolve the issue temporarily
- Turn off Preflight seems to resolve the issue temporarily
Note:
- The issue seems to be specific to the MAC platform only. Impacted macOS (Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura(maybe), Monterey)
- The issue seems to be specific to the MAC devices
- Apple MacBook Pro M1/M2/M3
- Apple MacBook Air M1/M2/M3
- Apple Max Studio M1/M2/M3
- Apple Mac mini M1/i7 Intel
- The issue exists for both old and new documents
Additional information needed:
- Screenshot of Memory usage while the issue is observed
- Is the "Contextual Task bar" shown? If yes, Disable it from "Window->Contextual Task bar"
- Please follow the below steps for InDesign 20.0.1.32 and InDesign PR 20.1.0.28 on Macintosh
- Open Terminal in full screen mode
- Drag the InDesign application on terminal (e.g. "/Applications/Adobe\ InDesign\ 2025/Adobe\ InDesign\ 2025.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ InDesign\ 2025")
- Copy the logs when you start facing the slowness in a text(.txt) file. Share the file with us at sharewithID@adobe.com.
Hi,
Thank you for reporting the issue. We are currently investigating the issue and updated the status in the Uservioce thread. However, the issue is still not reproducible in-house and we need additional information

Same issues here on a Mac mini 2018 i7, 64GB ram with an amd radeon 6800 16GB egpu. By accident I had Activity monitor open on the gpu tab. I clicked on Indesign and it showed the internal Intel gpu. That was weird, as in Indesign in the GPU performance showed the AMD card. I closed Indesign, right clicked on the app, and chose "prefer external gpu". Lo and behold after opening Indesign in Activity monitor was really running on the AMD now. And the performance in app was like it should be.

Unfortunately, the latest update did not resolve the delays occurring when switching between tools and functions.
I am working on an Apple Silicon Mac Studio with the M2 chip, 64 GB of memory, and a 2 TB internal SSD. My system is running macOS Sonoma 15.1.1 (24B91).
Even with a trivial task, such as switching between a text box (T) and the object itself (V), there is a delay of about half a second. I have never experienced anything like this, not even on my old MacBook Pro with an Intel chip running older Adobe CS versions. I must say that such performance is completely unusable for normal, everyday work.
When comparing the response speed to the latest Illustrator, the difference is staggering. Illustrator reacts instantly, as it should, without any delays.
I don’t understand what has been done to the latest versions of InDesign, but working on any document in this software has become unbearable, unsustainable, and, most importantly, impossible in the long term.
To clarify, I have uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign twice, cleared the cache, and reset preferences. The issue persists, and I am convinced the problem lies in the code.
I kindly ask for your advice or a fix as soon as possible.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi guys,
i'm using Dropbox and have noticed activity when the beachball starts spinning in InDesign. I've all files on my HDD and i'm only mirroring them on Dropbox for backup purposes. Maybe there's a connection or it has something to do with autosave in InDesign? Hope that helps—it really gets annoying ...
Cheers from Vienna, Benjamin -

Having same issues. Seems related to switching away from the application and going back. I have tried many solutions listed and it will work well until I switch and then the issues begin. Really just 100% unusable at that point.

I turned off Contextual Task bar, turned off all my fonts (including most of my Cloud fonts), deleted my preferences, turned off "Auto-activate Adobe Fonts" , set Display Performance to "Fast" and Adjust View Settings to "Fast". Even tried working in Safe Mode. Nothing worked.
It works for a short time when I reboot my computer. Takes 3 clicks to get it to work (ie, to select a word in a text box, I have to click 3 times).
I'm running Sequoia 15.1.1 on a 2.4 GHz 8 Core Intel Core i9 with 64 GB of RAM. InDesign 20.0.1.

HEllo, can someone from Adobe comment on this bug/issue please. I've ssen lots of people suffer from this. Reverting back solves everthing, but that is not an option for bigger studios with large teams working on the same documents.

After installing Indesign 2025 (20.1), there is now a 3-5 sec lag every time I click my mouse in and out of the program. This is becoming incredibly frustrating. I've uninstalled/re-installed the app multiple times and I've reset preferences on quit and nothing is changing. please help ASAP

Every few seconds, indesign gets stuck for a few seconds, no matter what it does, it has confirmed that the computer's performance is sufficient.
mac mini m4pro 48GB RAM + 1TB hard disk
macos 15.1.1
In the indesign preferences, the GPU performance column says 36GB of memory, but it's actually 48GB, and I don't know what's wrong. -

There is a 3 second lag when switching from the move tool to the text tool before the text tool even appears.
Also a 3 second lag after the text box is set when then trying to select the text before the cursor even appears so I can paste or even just type text.
and a 1 or 2 second lag before the text appears after I type it.Note: The document I am working with is 44 pages with hand drawn art placed from TIF files in the background and has paragraph styles. I also do "Save as" when saving. Using typical display settings not overprint preview. No other programs open but Word and Acrobat.
So bad. Destroying my workflow.
Can you help me fix this issue? Or figure out why it's happening?
Any suggestions would help.Already reset preferences. No change.
Tried starting with the IDML file. No change.NOTE: This Issue does NOT occur in a brand new document.

One of the biggest issues I have since 25 and 25.1 aside from the lag issues is the fact the proportion lock turns back off constantly. I resize by typing a new measurement a lot, and every time I click an element (image, box, pasted vector logo or frame) then tap the lock and type a measurement to resize to, the constrain proportions lock turns back off again after. Previously if I locked it when resizing one thing, it'd stay locked for anything else I clicked including that same item, until I tapped the lock to unlock it again, and vic versa. Now, even for the same box it turns back off every single time I click off then back into the thing I'm resizing.
For that alone I'd roll back versions but you can't open anything you've saved in v25 or 25.1 in any version below that without exporting idml files etc and half our studio was on 25 before we knew how bad it was.
Nothing I cared about was fixed in 25.1.

Does anyone notice any difference with this preference unchecked? Even 25.01 has behaved just like 25 for me if I don't turn this off. Unchecking this box fixed any issues for me.

Further invesitgation shows that the activity monitor jumps from low areas of 3 percent of CPU used to over 130 percent. I was unable to catch it at that high level, but it changes back an forth every few seconds, very much like the beach ball. I opened a blank document and these issues were prevalent, however when I closed all other windows and programs, the problem was less noticeable. Upon opening a second blank document the problem started again. No specific task. It happens on opening a new document, it happens when touching the "frame" of the document, it happened when I touched the text tool.

Upgraded to Sequoia which coincided with updates to adobe versions. Im running an Intel IMac and have experienced all of the issues seen below. Spinning beach ball on any movement or touch in the program. Click on a text box - ball, change a tool, sometimes - ball, sometimes not. It's like the program is losing it's place and lagging. I am not experiencing crashes, but most of my files at this point are pretty simple. Slowness with my existing docs and new docs. Definitely tied to movement within the page. scrolling, dragging, things like that.

Same problems here on a new machine: Apple M3 Max Sonoma 14.7.1 (23H222)
Totally unusable, and the complaints about being sent 2025 files to work on are echoed - absolute mess.

InDesign is the workhorse for many creatives. It won't be long before a client (who is the middle man) sends me a 2025 InDesign for Windows file that I'll need to request be saved down, if we even know who created it.

I lost half a day recently to troubleshooting this (uninstalling, reinstalling, etcetera). With all the bugs in 2025 and 2024, too, that especially affect those of us working in accessibility, we all deserve heavy discounts on our Adobe subscriptions.

Hi Sanyam,
when will this be fixed please? This has a major impact .People in design studios cannot revert back, because we have live documents in the new version.
