ID 2020 15.1 - All text variables (including page numbers) replaced by "ss" text
Just updated to ID 2020 15.1 and found a bug which makes the program unusable forcing me to immediately downgrade.
When I open on of my ID documents created in previous version of ID, all of my defined text variables as well as page numbers are corrupted and replaced by the "ss" text. Changing the style has no effect. I can create page number based on the 'Basic Paragraph' style but when i choose any other previously created style, the number changes to 'ss'.
Even the variable field preview shows 'ss' text instead of variable name.
The same document opens in ID 2020 15.0.3 without any problems.
The fix is now publicly available in the latest InDesign update, 15.1.1
Please update to this latest version to get the fix.

Same Problem in an existing job. If I add a new text box with a new page number marker that works fine, but the existing text box does not, even if I re insert a current page number marker.

How can Adobe release a sizeable update like this with such a huge bug? Thats amazing!
This is a nightmare for me. When will it be fixed? -

I read somewhere this is a bug and they should have an update by next week. It's really messing up a book project that I've just started.

We are working towards getting the fix out as a publicly available release soon. We will update the status once the release has been pushed publicly.
In the interim we have posted the beta build so that if anyone wants, they can try it out from our prerelease portal. -

I am sorry to say that expecting us to be your test conduit for a software we pay for, one whose release should have been correctly tested beforehand anyways offering basic features as page and footnote numbers, sounds unfair and makes little sense to me. We appreciate all the work done by Adobe in creating this and other wonderful applications and system of upgrading, updating and improving the software in every release, and have taken for granted that you already have a sound internal testing procedure before you release each version. This seems to have been simply a gross and odd mishap, hopefully. So, why should I spend my time and risk my files testing your software again, not knowing whether there are still other errors around we have not noticed, ones that may end up corrupting my files and preferences again? I understand that those immediately and irreversibly in need may want to try the beta test version to move on, but I don't find any urgent need to upgrade until you offer assurance that the version to be upgraded is a final, internally tested, version. I have gone back to the last version and will just work as is, until you provide further notice about a finally approved version, as it is usually done and expected. My suggestion to all is just revert to the last version if you can, and just wait until Adobe offers a fully tested new version. I think it is fair not rush Adobe into fixing this, and end up with more errors. Just revert back to last version and give them more time, if this is possible for some to do. My reversion to the last version, other than loss of some preferences, seems to be going fine. I'll just wait, as if no new version has been released. My suggestion to Adobe is to make sure the same error is not made in Illustrator and other applications in this 2020 release.

After the last InDesign update, footnotes and endnotes are in trouble. In the text the note appears as "ss" and not with the number or symbol chosen for the reference. In the footnote or endnote the number is correct

Instead of inserting number as footnote reference, after the last update, InDesign insert an ss. Also does for the footnote number in the bottom (footnote mark).
P.S. Solution: Make a new doc from scratch, do not use something created in a previeous version.

I can confirm with above “ss’ bug report above, the new update changes all FOOTNOTE NUMBERS to “ss”. While the number in the text is remains a number. In new documents the footnote are numbers and in the text it is “ss"
