[Performance] Footnote disappears
A footnote disappeared without reason then appeared back when I changed something in the page layout. This is a very important bug because InDesign didn't display any kind of warning about this problem: no red indicator of missing text or overfull text block. I noticed it by chance. Please look at the screen captures to understand it: the number 2 footnote is missing whereas the footnote number is present in the text. In the other screen capture, the problem has been solved.

The fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign – version 16.1
Please update to this version to get the fix. To prevent problem on existing documents and see the footnotes again, you will have to force recompose the stories.
To force recompose stories, you can use the shortcut Command-Option-/ (slash) on Mac or Ctrl-Alt-slash on Windows

This is a joke at this stage. Adobe clearly don't care about fixing this issue.
Does anyone know of a comparable publishing suite? So many other bugs popping up lately, disappearing pages when text is changed for example. Might be time to vote with my feet! -

Nearly the end of Jan 2021 and this is NOT fixed.
The footnotes randomly disappear during export -- I check the file carefully, then export, and the PDF shows them gone. I go back to my file, and yep, they're gone. I can get them back by pulling the textbox down, but then the whole file redistributes and adds an extra page at the end. When working on multiple files, this is a lot of extra work!
It happens mostly when working in the Book environment -- if I export the whole book as PDFs. When I export from the Book as separate files, it seems to go ok, but I hold my breath as I do it. I think I'll stop using the Book function until there's a fix, which again makes my workflow a lot longer.
I've just almost lost a valuable client because of this problem, and that is unacceptable. Lift your game, Adobe.

Cutting text and repasting it in worked for me. Lucky that my 158 page document was mostly one text chain! -

In the release notes for version 16.0.1, there's no indication that this issue was fixed. Have y'all given up? Please post a new update in this bug thread—the latest one as of today is from March 5. This issue is causing so many problems. Your customers deserve a response.

Here is one short video example how is harmful this bug
In the video you can clearly see that after the footnote number (2) the following footnotes is the number (5). So the footnotes number (3) and number (4) have simply disappeared.

i found some probably reason for this problem. I added a testfile where you can reproduce the disappearence of the footnotes. I realized that, wenn i change the left/right pages the disappearence happens.
I could help myself, when i cut out all the text and paste it again, then the footnotes appear again.
Problem appears on INDD 15.1.2 on Mac

When I move the text box, footnotes disappear. All gave the same error, including the last version.

I have the same problem, in InDesign 15.1.2 (Windows). I reported this bug for the last version, and am reporting it again. Attached are 2 files with the problem. As soon as the frame is resized, the footnotes appear. This is a HUGE problem that should have been resolved a year ago.

Saved the word doc as a .doc not as a .docx. This imported fine into inDesign with the footnotes intact.

I am designing three massive catalogues with footnotes randomly dissapearing and wrecking layout. Absolutely unacceptable. I am working on around 1200 pages. Because of this I am wasting hours of my work to make sure all the footnotes are there, clicking back and forward. Adobe should consider refunds or discounts until it is solved. Major issue.

@ Neal Gardner, I think the line break in itself may not necessarily have been the cause of the disappearing footnote, and that after deleting it, InDesign had to recompose, which often makes the notes reappear.
Our workaround for the time being is to force all text to recompose regularly in documents with footnotes.
