September 2020 and it's still a problem.

I had resolved a missing footnote issue a few months ago.

To fix, I first needed to remove a line break in the body text which had caused the footnote to disappear.
Once removed, the footnote re-appeared, and then I re-added the line break in a place which did not impact the footnote.

Have folks on this thread had a similar experience, where the culprit ended up being a line break?

@Ravi Kiran, please tell us what's going on. Has this really been in review for six months and change with no resolution? We're going to have to stop using InDesign if this isn't resolved.

This is a HUGE problem, with MASSIVE consequences for client confidence.

We create 100+page reports with 100s of footnotes. Every proof , some of them just drop off. The client thinks we are clueless and this bug has gone unfixed for MONTHS.

This bug has unfortunate consequences. The editorial team of a professional journal I'm involved with checks articles closely before sending them for printing to see that the footnotes appear where they should. But in a recent case they missed the fact that three footnotes had disappeared from a page. We are forced to republish the article in the next volume, which is bad for both the author and the community, as there will be two slightly different versions of the same piece in circulation. Please fix this!

I'm experiencing this - really challenging. It seems to happen when moving text blocks from one frame to another. Took me by surprise and means working through layout multiple times.

Adobe, can you finally start taking this seriously? It’s been getting on for a year now and you’ve done absolutely nothing. I assume you’ve been sitting back waiting for an enterprising user to ***** the problem. I can’t be the only one whose lost money due to this extremely serious hidden bug.

Adobe, please fix this, or at least provide an update. In certain publishing contexts, a dropped footnote can be serious business (think legal consequences, for example).

I've just discovered this bug on a 180pg report, so it's a considerable problem. Do the footnotes disappear completely, or are they recoverable from the document somewhere?

We had the same issue. Some of the footnotes disappeared. but the most of them were still there. The counter on the foot of the page skipped this numbers. After cutting the mark in the text and pasting in a new textbox the footnote appeared again. after that we could copy and paste it in the original textbox again. the footnote was visible again. its really frustrating in law texts with tons of footnotes.

Just encountered this problem in ID 15.02 on a Mac running OS 10.15.6.
This is absolutely horrific for books of hundreds of pages with hundreds of footnotes.

The "fixes" suggested remind me of the disappearing continued footnote line, but that is just unfortunate if it slips by; missing notes are disastrous.

Any updates for a fix on this issue? It's a MAJOR issue that has been around for almost 1 year now. Being in academic publishing, footnotes are very important and can even lead to lawsuits if the source (as a footnote) of an image/figure doesn't show. There is no way to tell what triggers this issue and this is why it is very frustrating and of course risky. Indesign has been known to be very reliable throughout the years but this time it is the complete opposite.

Someone needs to wake up at Adobe because we are all paying monthly for this app that is currently not working as expected. Furthermore, it is putting in danger the reputation of publishers that worked so hard to build up for many years.

Still having this problem - book of 350 pages and I can't tell when the footnotes are going to disappear or it will just insert random blank pages. Please, please fix this!

Not only do notes disappear, but sometimes the texts disappear in a page box. Absurd! (Indesign 15.1 + Catalina 10.15.6 + MacPro). We have 4 licenses in the office and we are seriously considering changing products!

Tragedy ... There is never certainty when a footnote disappears ... Fix it because it disqualifies the program for serious work. You still need to check if the footnotes have disappeared. They disappear after changing pages in the book, even though it was approx.

We are having serious problems with this bug (I work in academic publishing). Fixing a typo in one chapter of the same InDesign book will sometimes - not often, but sometimes - cause footnotes to vanish in some subsequent chapters, without any warning. Going to the page of a missing footnote and adjusting the size of the frame very slightly (even if it is then adjusted back again) makes the footnote jump back into existence. But you have to know that it's missing in order to do this, and there is no indication except that if you look on the page, it isn't there. This may happen on, e.g., only four random footnotes out of a 1000 in a book. But four is enough. And next time, it will be a different four. Text silently reflows to fill the space given up by the missing footnote, so the error doesn't only affect the pages where footnotes are missing: it also affects subsequent ones.

All of this makes it difficult to send a revise of a proof to an author without rechecking every page by hand whenever anything is changed anywhere. Indexing is especially difficult.

If Photoshop had been randomly omitting chunks of images since October, I kind of think Adobe would have fixed this by now. They really need to appreciate how serious this bug is. I appreciate that all users believe that the bug affecting them is the only important one. But still, no possible new feature in InDesign would be as helpful to us as fixing this bug would be.

We are also having this problem in version 15.1.1. This is a very dangerous bug as it's hard to spot.

I confirm that in version 15.1.1 the problem persists. Solving this bug is very important, you risk doing a lot of damage and you need to fix it as soon as possible. I enclose an example in which notes 1 and 2 disappear (screen 1), without any warning from the program, reappearing only when I manually edit the text cage (screen 2).

Even in 15.1.1, I have exactly the same issue when opening a file that was initially created with an older version. Only when I change text immediately next to the footnote reference does the footnote appear – not when I do any text operation anywhere in the file (as described above by amaarora).

The workaround by Khalid AlAjaji seems to work for me: global search for all superscript characters and change it to the same colour (or some similar “change” with no effect – I suppose the trigger is to do any kind of change to the footnote reference in the text to make the footnote reappear). However, I still wait for the customer’s feedback.

Adobe, THIS IS VERY SERIOUS, please solve this! Sending files to customers with missing footnotes is very bad for my reputation. Please, please, please solve this!

This bug is still ongoing and is extremely serious. ID need to provide a warning and at the very least provide an update so that the preflight feature alerts you to the missing footnotes as an interim measure until a final fix is found. I have spoken to Adobe customer care on several occasions about this and I get one time fixes like adjust the page margins or change the document footnote options. But this IS NOT a permanent fix and still requires me to examine each and every footnote in a document manually. I work on books that have 10,000+ footnotes. A huge waste of time and money, and a huge risk to me and my clients if a book is printed with missing footnotes.

I'm losing confidence in Adobe over this.
