Option to select default editor for scripts.
After update to MacOs Catalina the command to "Edit Script" from the flyout menu does nothing when in an Indesign version prior to CC 2020. This is because ExtendScript Toolkit no longer runs as it is a 32 bit application.
In Indesign 2020 the command opens Visual Studio Code.
However, I prefer using another application for editing scripts.
So my feature request is simply:
We need options to select which application Indesign opens for editing scripts.
Maybe even one for applescripts, one for javascripts and one for vb scripts.Or at least rely on the system’s default application for the filetype in question.
Thanks

arabic support
Add support for toggling right-to-left text in all versions of InDesign.
Do not hide/remove/restrict it for users who don't use an african/middle-eastern language version of the program. Having to install multiple InDesign-versions depending on what document you work with is stilly. Is there any reason for this at all?
We have designers that occasionally have to set documents translated to Arabic. Right now this is near-impossible as we use an English version of InDesign.
It appears the support is there "under the hood" and you have just hidden it in the UI, since I can get "right-to-left" paragraph settings in my styles if I base it off the arabic placeholder text (the option is not in the UI, but can still be saved in the style).
I don't have to install an arabic browser to see arabic text. I don't need to install an arabic version of Word to edit word documents with arabic text. It should not be nesscessary with InDesign either.

Option to set up a template to open with a default file name
Add a check box when saving an indesign template that would allow you to create a default file name.
For example, when I create a business card template for our company to use, I save the template as "Business Card (Name)" but when the template is opened it opens as "Untitled-1"
Having an option to save the template to open as "Business Card (Name)" but also require the designer to use Save As when they are finished entering the information would help to ensure file naming consistency for a specific type of file across the whole design team.

Import a multipage PDF into existing graphic frames
I need to be able to set up a document with graphic frames, then import a multipage PDF using a script which places each page into each frame. When the script encounters a page not containing a frame, it will miss it out and place into the next available frame.

Problem with Paragraph Borders across the page (with same paragraph style)
In the "Paragraph Borders" we need an option that allows you to determine whether or not to leave the "paragraph border" at the bottom of the page. When using the same paragraph style (to simulate a table) often the client requires that the border at the bottom (or top) of the page are not visible, to indicate continuity (as happens now in the case in which the same paragraph is divided between the two pages).
Operating system: "catalina 10.15.1".

Ability to scroll/move on page while style options window is open
In earlier versions of InDesign this was possible. Now I can only zoom in and out. While editing my styles I want to be able to still zoom AND scroll/move on the pages in order to see the changes where the take effect.

Allow variables to be used within styles
It would be great to have a more flexible method of configuring styles; the purpose being to cut down on the number of styles with only minor differences between them.
We use page templates where the layout is pretty much the same, apart from minor differences / colours. But we have to define a complete set of styles for all colour variations, greatly increasing the complexity.
However, if you can enable any setting to be stored as a variable, this could reduce the number of styles in a document by 90%. For example:
A set of master styles for the document is created, with some settings being stored as variables. These variables are then associated with a particular page template. Then, when you use the master styles in the document, the appearance changes depending on which page template they're used on.
Used this way, if you have 10 page templates and 10 styles, the total number of styles for the document would be 10. However, at the moment, you have to define styles for each of the page templates, which would mean 100 styles in the document.
This also has other implications; for example, even though there are 10 styles with only subtle differences between them, they are used for the same purpose on each page (running headers, for example) - yet keyboard shortcuts can't be assigned as you'd have to use 10 different shortcuts, and remember which one is used for which template.
There are also advantages to using variables too - if you configure a page using one page template, then need to change the style, simply changing the page template would completely change the look in one action (whereas at the moment all styles would have to be changed manually or by find and replace).

Please can InDesign use true OpenType superscripts and subscripts if they are available in the font
Please can InDesign use true OpenType superscripts and subscripts if they are available in the font, in the same way that it will use the true OpenType small caps.
Or can there be a way in the paragraph styles to tell it to use them. (Not a character style as they are not necessarily tagged, they just pull through from Word or other manuscript source as superscript or subscript.)5 votes -

Consolidate shared links when packaging a book
It would be great when packaging a book to consolidate links that are shared between documents to a "Shared Links" folder.
As currently if you have 5 chapter document which all have the same link placed in them - then this link will be duplicated 5 times when it is unnecessary and also creates problems when updating links later on

Add a H&J violation property to InDesign Script
It would be nice to be able to read the amount of H&J violation on a given line through the InDesign script.
This would let us work on better ways to trim the text.

Please, please please bring back Mini Bridge!
Please, please please bring back Mini Bridge! As a designer who works on lots of books and publications with tons of pieces and parts, Mini Bridge was an invaluable tool! I didn't have to continuously go to >File>Place and go find my graphics. They were always right there where I needed them.

Object styles to include layer allocation
E.g.. Text frame (object style) can be then assigned to text layer and moved accordingly.
It would work well for images/charts, etc for long docs such as Annual Reports, etc
Would be a good organisational tool to keep text layers above image/graphics that can cause issues.5 votes
