Expose a page item's height and width to scripting
A script can determine a page item's dimensions via its geometricBounds property. But this doesn't work when the page item is overset. To get the dimensions of page item in overset text, you have to expose the page item temporarily, which is always time-consuming and often barely possible.
So if we could have properties such as
myTextFrame.width
myTextFrame.heightthat would be very useful.
Thank you.

Enable switching of pages in imported pdfs
I wish there was a way to change the page of an imported multi-page pdf instead of going to relink the image (to the same file) and selecting the page with the import options clicked. This would save me so much time. All it would require is a page up/down button in the links palette that would only be visible when a multi page pdf was linked in the document.

Add an option to the paragraph styles panel to view paragraphs sorted by the "based on" property.
Add an option to the paragraph styles panel to view paragraphs sorted by the "based on" property.
I'm thinking something visually like the way illustrator displays groups and groups within groups, on the layer panel.
This will save a great deal of time opening and closing paragraph style panels to find out which styles are based on others before you make an edit to one of them. Instead you will be able to near instantly tell which other styles will be affected by your change to one style.

Character styles applied to paragraphs apply to bullets as well
99.9% of the time I want bullets to match the text color. When changing the character color via the Paragraph Styles palette or when selecting the text and changing the color via the color palette, the bullets do just that. But when I select text and change the color via a character style, the bullets don't follow suit.
To give you an example of why this would be useful to me, one thing I often end up doing is creating two versions of something: one on a dark background, one on a light background. The only thing different between the two is the text color, so instead of creating an entirely new paragraph style for "dark" or "light," I just apply a character style to the text frames that changes the color in all of them.
And this works perfectly well when it comes to bullets. If my text contains a bullet list, I have to duplicate the bullet style, apply the desired character style to the bullets in the Bullets and Numbering panel, then apply the style to the text. Which is an annoying extra step for something that's an otherwise simple change.
It would be nice if character styles applied to an entire bullet paragraph automatically applied to the bullets as well, so I could avoid the process described. If I want the bullets to be a different color than the text, THEN I'll use the character style settings in the Bullets and Numbering panel.

Reset preferences functionality is now available with InDesign 2024(v19.4.0 onwards)
There are so many folks reporting InDesign issues on the forum recently that are solved by trashing preferences and/or clearing the cache files. This is so easy to address in Photoshop—Prefs > General > Reset Preferences on Quit—and so many steps in InDesign. We have to determine the operating system, address how to show hidden files, etc. Can this please be added to Preferences?
11 votesThe feature is now available from InDesign 2024(v19.4.0.63) onwards. We recommend you upgrade to the latest version to try the feature. Refer to Reset User preferences for more details.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application click on the context menu on the top right, and click on Check for App Updates.

Scaleable exporting PDF
For many 'big print' applications, you need to upload your design in 100% off the format. But, in many cases, your design is made in 1:10 scale for better cross design, workflow and speed of Indesign.
It would be nice to 'export' your file in a scale. So that your Indesign doc remains the 1:10 scale (or else) and your PDF can easily be twice or ten times bigger. This is very handy for roll-up banner, screens, walls etc. You can say that Indesign should not be the right application for big print. But if i want that the brochure, wall and roll-up banners are exactly the 'same' in all its design, this should be very nice.

Index Alphabetising Systems
I'm currently producing a book every Bob Dylan song in it for his publisher. It's a huge project and I'm indexing. I've noticed something very odd with InDesign's indexing system, which is that it's only possible to alphabetise letter-by-letter, so if these were song titles, I'd get this (in this order):
I Dream
I'm Asking
I'm Falling
I WinOf course, what I want is word-by-word indexing, which would give me the (correct) following:
I Dream
I Win
I'm Asking
I'm FallingI know I can tweak these entries manually, and I have done but it's laborious and risky. I then match my index order with one automatically generated in Microsoft Excel, which does order word-by-word. In fact I am copying across the Excel list and superimposing it on the InDesign generated index to make sure they're the same. It's such an odd omission that I keep thinking I must have missed an option, but apparently this is the only way InDesign knows how to order alphabetically. Very weird.

set individual pages as non-numbered in books
I use the book feature for many, if not most of the documents that I create. Each individual InDesign document included within the book is a new chapter. Because the majority of my clients request printed copies of the documents I create, I usually create customized tab pages that precede each chapter, so that the end user can easily find a specific section. These tabs are printed on card stock instead of the standard bond paper that is used for the content of the document.
The majority of my documents require page numbers, and so I use the feature where the page numbering is continued from the previous document within the book file.
It makes sense to be able to create a tab as a single page within each individual chapter page. However, when the tab page is included in each chapter, that tab page is counted as a page and given a page number, as if it was just another page within the body of the document.
So, now I create a separate document for all of the tabs, and when I have to manually relocate all of the tabs into their proper location when I export to a PDF, or have to provide very specific instructions to my printer when having the document printed and bound.
It would be ideal if there was a setting at the Master Page level that allowed me to designate certain page types as not to be included in automatic page numbering.

Automatic Vertical Justification for entire document
We are facing more manual work for Vertical Justification during pagination process. We need a option to make Vertical Justification for entire document without disturbing in between lines space.
We already saw such option in 3B2 platform and it's very useful if we have a option for InDesign.

Disable Endnotes on Word Import
The new endnote feature in InDesign 2018 might be an improvement in some cases, but in the case of complex layouts with a lot of unlinked text frames within a same piece (magazine layouts) it is really not intuitive or helpful.
There should be an option for the user to disable it when he judges it useful, rather than to be forced to work around it.

More control with paragraph shading
I would like more control over the space insets in the paragraph shading options. When a long paragraph of text flow on to the next page there is no way to control the spacing above (padding) when we're in the middle of the paragraph and "clip to frame" is checked. It is possible to get away with it if the distance from the top-margin and the first baseline is sufficient, but most of the time I want more space. I think it would be better if the text was forced down to the second baseline if necessary. The end goal is to have the same amount of space above the text where the shaded paragraph starts and where it continues on the next page. This looks better. See the attached file.

Proposal for Native Persian Language Engine in Adobe InDesign
Dear Adobe InDesign Team,
I hope this message finds you well.
As a long-time user of Adobe InDesign in the publishing and design industry in Iran, I would like to bring to your attention a significant challenge that many Persian-speaking designers and publishers face when using this powerful software.Adobe InDesign has become the cornerstone of layout and design for books, newspapers, and magazines in Iran. However, despite the availability of the Middle Eastern (ME) version of InDesign, Persian is not natively supported. Instead, the software relies on Arabic language support, which leads to a range of issues due to the fundamental differences between the two languages.
Key Issues Faced by Persian Users:
Lack of a native Persian text engine: The current reliance on the Arabic engine causes incompatibilities, as Persian includes additional characters such as "پ", "چ", "ژ", and "گ" which are not present in Arabic.Different glyph shapes and behavior: Persian text often renders incorrectly or inconsistently due to glyph mismatches or substitutions, requiring manual adjustments.
Default LTR text boxes: When creating a new text frame, the default direction is left-to-right, which is impractical for RTL languages like Persian. This requires constant manual correction or the use of custom scripts.
Inefficient workarounds: Designers often resort to JavaScript scripts and time-consuming tweaks just to achieve proper Persian text handling.
Proposal:
To address these issues and significantly improve the experience of Persian-speaking users, I respectfully propose the following:Develop a native Persian text engine alongside the Arabic one in the ME version of InDesign.
Automatically enable right-to-left direction when Persian is detected or selected as the document language.
Provide complete support for Persian glyphs and typography, separate from the Arabic implementation.
Consider Persian-specific typographic features, such as justification behavior, kashida, and numeral handling.
This improvement would not only benefit users in Iran but also the wider Persian-speaking community worldwide, including Afghanistan and Tajikistan. We believe that Adobe, as a leader in creative software, has the vision and capacity to make InDesign more inclusive and better adapted to a wider range of global languages.
Thank you for your time and for continuously developing such a powerful tool. We hope you will consider this request and help bridge this longstanding gap in support for Persian language professionals.
Sincerely,
AkbarDear Adobe InDesign Team,
