nest pages
The pages panel is the most ridiculously cumbersome thing in the world!
I make digital planners and regularly work with documents that are over 2k pages long- there is SO MUCH SCROLLING OH MY GOD
Please make pages nestable where we can group them together and expand or hide as necessary like photoshop layers folders.
if designers are working on a book there's absolutely no need to see the entire book all the time - being able to work chapter by chapter is so much easier to manage than scrolling for a month! Also the scrolling in the pages panel is equally cumbersome it either crawls or shoots down 100 pages.
If you can do this with photoshop layers I don't see why this very sensible convenient workflow can't be applied to indesign.

Overhaul Bullets and Numbering and add features to make it useful.
Right now the bullets and numbering features are so limited and feel like an afterthought. Here is what I need in order of importance:
The ability to format bullets/numbers so they ignore extra line spaces.
The ability to align the bullets to the center. When one bullet's verbiage is longer than one line of text the bullet stays on the first line, what I need is for the bullet to be centered with all of the lines of text in that bullet, so if you had a bullet that was three lines long, the bullet would be centered to the middle; or if two lines long, the bullet would be centered in between the two lines.
Give Bullets and Numbering its own window panel. Otherwise I have to hunt it down, google it, etc. Opening paragraph window and then clicking the hamburger icon is not intuitive.
More customization of the bullet symbol. Allow me to easily customize color, size, and spacing from the bullets and numbering panel. Also include more stock shapes and options to choose from that aren't just derived from a font. Allow me to import my own custom shape to use a bullet.

Same Gradient-Tool as in Premiere Pro?
In generell - why not make all tools more consitent? Gradients in InDesign are still way behind Illustrator, while both lack the elegant, intuitive rubber band of Premiere Pro's gradients. I think, everyone would love the Premiere Pro-version in InDesign (and Illustrator, too, because it doesn't feel that fluid there!).

Page numbering for spreads
Numbering for Spreads, not just single pages.
A simple option as follows:
Type > Insert Special Character > Markers > New Spread Numbering Options
I.e This would make page 1-2 appear as spread number 1 automatically throughout the document
A life saver and simply amazed this doesn't already exisit!Adobe, please please please implement. It will be a dramatic time saver over doing it manually.
Thank you,

Invite To Edit for InDesign
Just wondering if we might one day see an Cloud Based Invite To Edit feature similar to the Illustrator and Photoshop feature for InDesign? I assume this might come when there is a iPad capable version for iPad? While it is not needed all the time I sometimes have to share a file to be edited by internal people in a company and it would be great if it could be shared and collaborated on so there is one master version of the file instead of sharing and then having an outdated file after they have done updates or changes.

Export to gif from InDesign - feature request
PLEASE ALLOW EXPORT TO GIF FOR INDESIGN ANIMATIONS.
I can't work out why this feature exists if we can't export it. I design google ads, web banners, EDMs etc in multiple formats with fast turnaround, in IND. But can't export a gif despite animations teasing me with all the cool things it could do.
The best I can do is duplicate a page, flash something or duplicate 18 steps and export as jpg then stack & animate as frames in Photoshop (or create from scratch in Photoshop and use the comet tool, but that can be annoying to try to match perfectly or marry in with the other InDesign formats if designing an EDM) either option adds SO MUCH TIME.
I'm aware of two dodgy ways to do this, one using an extension that isn't Adobe verified and costs more than my adobe suite COMBINED, which is already expensive. The other is to screen record it but that's tedious too, having to perfectly crop the screen recording isn't a great solution for high volume designs or multiple revisions.
I got so excited with the new update toting new format compatibility, alas, this wasn't gif.

Change one setting across styles
Changing one element for several styles at once is extremely important, and not only for fonts (for which obviously Replace Fonts can be used). For example, if you have an ebook localized into Japanese, you have to go style by style applying a different paragraph composer, kinsoku and mojikumi settings, etc.

Preflight to list Font type used in file.
Please make InDesign Preflight list the type of font missing (Adobe font, ttf, otf). We are a Prepress company and when preflighting jobs, we flag to the customer that a font is missing, but is available in Adobe Fonts. If we just activate the Adobe font, it could be the wrong type. A lot of the times the client has forgotten to send the font (otf, ttf).
An example of this is Adobe Caslon Pro Italic. My file is using the otf type, but InDesign is telling me it is available on Adobe Fonts. If I just activated the Adobe Font type, it would be the wrong one.
Right now the InDesign Preflight only shows what font is missing, but not the type. If it also listed the version (Adobe Font, otf, ttf), it would remove any confusion as to which type of font was used in the file.

Disable features to speed up performance and remove bloat.
I wish there was a feature where we could disable all the bloat that we don't need - I am not interested in CC Libraries, Share for Review and god knows what else. The performance of this bloated app is sub standard and something like this would help.

Keep All Paragraphs of the Same Style Together
In Paragraph Style Options/Keep Options or in Table of Contents Styles, add an option to keep all paragraphs of the same style together. This would be very helpful when creating tables of contents or, in some circumstances, bullet lists.

Add open documents to a book
Allow documents to be open when adding them to a book. This used to be allowed. Now you must close all documents before adding them to a book, then re-open them again. Waste of time.

Put Distribute Spacing icons in the Control Bar
I use these controls along with the align controls every day. There's no reason they can't be grouped together with the align controls in the control bar.
I keep all my tool palettes on a second monitor, so the Align buttons in the control bar are 30" away from the Distribute Spacing icons in the Properties panel of the second monitor.

Allow padding for image frames and graphics
Allow padding settings for image frames like text frames. The padded frame for text boxes is great and heavily used, but we have to use empty frames set to mm sizes as spacer squares as it's not currently possible to add padding to an image or graphic like you can a text frame. This would make creating neat, uniformly spaced objects much easier and more visual than having to manually type coord values or creating spacer squares.

Allow more customization in Export Tagging
I love that InDesign can convert my paragraph/character styles into CSS for me when exporting to epub or xml. But it would be really handy if I could customize what CSS gets exported.
For example, I might have a "ChapterNumber" style and a "ChapterTitle" style in an 8.5x11 book. In InDesign I might set ChapterNumber to have a space below of 1 inch. This looks great in an 8.5x11 print book, but when the book is converted to an epub, the spacing gets converted from "1 inch" to a very high margin spacing in the CSS. Consequently I have to make lots of manual changes to the CSS.
It would be very convenient if instead I could go into ChapterNumber's Export Tagging settings and set that the margin-bottom will always be 2em or something like that.
I can already see what the CSS is going to be in the "Export Details" section of Export Tagging. It would be great if I could change that.

InCopy/Word
I can appreciate InCopy's capability of linking multiple authors. I personally never have need of that. Here's what I wish InCopy could do: Take MS Word file and make them fully compatible with InDesign. That is ... to remove all the rookie techniques employed by so many Word users, to remove all the mysteriously bogus code that creates frustrating local formatting. Sometimes you can fix these things by saving the text as RTX (or DOC instead of DOCX) from Word, but that doubles the number of text files to store - unnecessarily complicated. Often authors have copied strings of text from non-Word sources and the original formatting refuses to strip out without saving as RTX. Force-applying styles in ID risks losing any local formatting that needs to be preserved, like italicize scientific names. This might seem trivial to ID users who don't create long repetitive documents or periodicals. But I lay out several periodicals - all using Word files created by PHDs who haven't a clue how Word works. For decades, I have searched for a solution. And I think Adobe is best qualified to solve it. We need a word processor app dedicated to InDesign.
Thanks!

It is very troublesome to select fonts
It is very troublesome to select fonts from a list when managing a large number of fonts. Also, even when selecting font names by typing, it is difficult to select candidates if there is a typing error.

Data Merge preview longest record
Data merge preview should have an option to "View longest data", which would display the longest record for each data field. This way we can make sure there is no overset text which currently notifies after creating a merged PDF.
