Footnote starting feature
I have a suggestion
I would like to see an option to restart footnote numbering. An option to number footnotes according to paragraph style would be good.3 votes -
Accessibility: DESPERATELY need to input table summaries in Indesign. Before exporting to Acrobat
Accessibility: Long form print/digital/W3C-ADA designers need to be able to input table summaries in Indesign. I update an Accessibility Document 2-3/year. +325 Tables/25 pgs. This one project that is coupled with a 240 page digital catalog is the bain to my existence. Having to redo the Table Summary work every interation is TORTURE.

Opentype + Glyphs UI Menu Preview
The UI for Opentype is extremely difficult and time consuming to use. The entire thing needs to be set up like Illustrator, with one addition: PREVIEW TYPOGRAPHIC FEATURES (especially the stylistic sets).
This UI feature should behave just like the Fonts Menu: When you open the font family menu with text highlighted, each font you hover over previews on your selected text.
This needs to be replicated for Opentype and Glyphs. So once you open the dropdown for stylist sets or glyphs, each style you hover over, will preview in real time on your selected text or in a pop up menu.
Not only will this SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE USER EXPERIENCE by removing all the clunky impediments, it will also IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY! As someone lightly vision impaired, it is extremely difficult to see small details in the font + glyphs menu.
Having the ability to preview the changes on highlighted text, allows me to see the styles at a visible scale! Please Adobe team make these changes!🙏 It will make Opentype and Glyphs easier to use and more accessible to all. 😊
Also sorry if this request already exists - it's extremely hard to search and navigate posts. 😞

Change color to the QR Codes when using Data Merge
InDesign is great for controlling your design, but when you're importing a QR code from a spreadsheet using Data Merge, it feels a bit limiting. It's like what Henry Ford said about having any color car, as long as it's black.

Mark layers as visible in the exported PDF but non-printing from within InDesign export settings
PDFs have the ability to mark layers as non-printing, so that they appear visible on the screen but don't print to hard copy. I'm using this capability to add a light raster background to all pages of a workbook for students, which adds a bit of warm color to the on-screen viewing experience, but I don't want this background to use up all their toner if they decide to print the pages. Similarly, the entire workbook has page numbers, but the worksheets should print without the page numbers, because they're not relevant outside the context of the book.
I found a solution thanks to helpful advice on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/indesign/comments/191ojvr/creating_a_pdf_with_visible_objects_that_do_not/), but the solution requires changing settings in the PDF after the export, which means that you have to redo it every time. It might be preferable to have an option on the layer options within InDesign, or a set of options in the export dialogue that can be saved as part of the preset. Not only would this make for a more comfortable user experience, but it would also save a lot of hassle figuring out how to do this in the first place, because it's not obvious that there wouldn't be a way to do it in InDesign and many things look like they would work until you try them.
I've included an excerpt from the PDF to show how the result works and to better communicate how such a feature would be useful.

More detailed document presets
If I'm regularly creating designs for which I'll need a variety of page layouts — say for example, a Facebook image, an Instagram image, a YouTube thumbnail, and a print flyer — I'd like to create a document preset that includes all of these.
Currently, you can only have one page size in a document preset, but I'd like to be able to designate something like "page 1 is letter size, page 2 is 1920x1080," etc.

Paragraph Rules Improvements
I would be great if the Paragraph Rules menu received a couple of improvements:
1) Add a chain link for when you want both the Color and Gap Color to be the same. Likewise for the Tint and Gap Tint percentage.
2) This one is a bit difficult to explain, but one of the biggest annoyances with using Paragraph Rules to apply a RULE ON to text is that the rule expands/contracts in an undesired way if you change the size of a text box or if you add/delete something from the text. What should happen is that the rule should stay put on the text you've highlighted.
Right now there's an option to set a RULE to either the Text or Column. But there should be a 3rd option there called "Highlighted Text" so whatever Rule you apply, always stays put on the highlighted text.
What I would like, for example, is to hightlight the word "John", apply a Rule to it, and have that rule stay put regardless of how I resize the text box.
Look at this crude image that shows how the RULE changes size when I modify the size of the text box.
Thanks.

Add brackets and arcs as underline options
To signal a contraction of a word, or a relation between two words, it would be helpful to have brackets and arcs (like slurs in a musical sheet) as underline options. This would simplify the edition of dictionaries and musical text.
See the examples attached.3 votes -
Option to lock text box position only, with text remaining editable
I would love the ability to lock the position of text boxes in a layout, while still allowing editing of the text contents. (Similar to the multiple types of layer lock in Photoshop).
This would be useful for the template documents I make and then share with collaborators. Other users edit the text, but sometimes accidentally nudge text boxes out of place that should be consistent in placement. I use Object Styles to check placement, but it's time-consuming to check each text box in a document with 100+ pages.

Please Add "Screen" Intent Option for Creating New Documents
Please add a new Intent option called "Screen" as a choice when creating a new INDD file. The current choices of Print, Web, and Mobile don't cover what I need for creating PPT backgrounds for slide shows, stills and lower thirds for our video team. Page sizes could be at least: 1366 x 768, 720p, 1080p, and possibly 3840 x 2160 for 4K. This would save time from rifling through the other options for the right dimensions, creating a custom size, changing measurements, and changing color profile.

Allow to resize the Keyboard Shortcuts window
Please make the Keyboard Shortcuts window resizable!
Namely, to make it taller.
Right now it's just too small and requires a lot of annoying scrolling to find the desired menu item.

The 'character direction' function for Arabic text layout
The 'character direction' function does not exist in the new version of Indesgin (2024). As a result, I cannot layout an Arabic text correctly. How can I do this?

Ability to copy and paste only the text style
After copying any text field by any means, having the ability to do a special paste on an different text field (copy/apply the properties and not the actual text).
Wordpress-Elementor has this feature and can be a real time saver for quickly making small changes to various smaller text fields.

Users should be able to spell check printable area only—what's actually on the pages, not in the workspace to the sides.

Create PDFs from Share for Review link
I am on InDesign 2023
My co-workers and I would love to have an option to create a pdf directly from the review. Sometimes they want to print out the version, and we have to create a pdf for them, so it's twice the work. This is the main reason why some of my co-workers don't like this feature, and it may end up being a reason our MarCom dept. refuses to adopt it as a way to share comments.3 votes -
Select starting or ending color for alternating fills on table
Because of the simple way our tables are designed, if the last row in the table is white (instead of the alternating gray), it can be confusing and looks like this row is not part of the table. The content of our tables change a lot during development, so I swap alternating fills a lot. Is it possible to add a feature that says "start with a gray row" or "end with a gray row" when using alternating fill?

Add Date function to the Interactive Forms Creator in IND
Add ability to put date formatting into the IND form creator (ie MM/DD/YYYY) - its a PAIN to add this in Adobe Acrobat AFTER I create a form in IND (especially when I have to make a change to the form within InDesign, I have to go back and re-add all of the places where I used Adobe Acrobat for date fields.)

Base font
It would be fantastic if I could select a base font to always come up if I'm substituting fonts (happens to me several times everyday) I would like to be able to change Minion to Helvetia Neue Pro as an auto rather than searching it out each time.
