Slant button to create faux italics
A one-click button to slant text and create faux italics.
Yes, the resulting text won't be real italics. Yes, typographic snobs will look down on InDesign and on you as a designer for using it.
But on projects were it doesn't matter, we get one-button access to make our clients happy and move onto projects where it real italics do matter.
I remember a time when this button was in InDesign, for the love of god, please bring it back.

Better Master Pages Concept
if a page is based on a mater page it seems likely that users will want to selectively turn on or off the visibility on a page to page basis.
currently in 13.1 x64 Indesign lets you choose none as an option on a page level of granularity
it would be better if the master page elements had their own layer in the page layers panel and each sub element that is on the master page had an eyeball icon to selectively turn on and off the visibility at the page being viewed.

Ability to scroll pages even in the export pdf menu.
In previous versions was possible to scroll in pages tab even when the PDF export dialog window was open, that was great to scroll in content and select all pages I needed to preview printed.
Not sure, if it wasn't just bug before but I am missing it now.

Please implement an option/script for the user to make the choice to turn backgroundprinting on or off..
A button or checkbox to turn of the backgroundtask would be useful (like the famous script: "controlBackgroundExport.jsx" by Marijan Tomba.
There are certain export/printjobs I want to see/follow in a processbar, even if that means that I am not able to work for that time.

Endnotes from Word as plain text, please. Just like it used to be.
Could you please add the option to InDesign to import Word files with endnotes as plain text? Just like it used to be?
The new footnote and endnote features are disastrous for my work as a book designer.
InDesign shouldn't become a text processor, I think. It is a design tool.3 votes -
Change the font size of the page information when printing out a page. This is too small at 6 pt.
We do thousands of imprints that have all the job number, customer PO and imprint info on the file name. We are converting from qk to indesign. Quark 's title page information uses much larger font and is at the top of the page when printed out which is much more convenient.
We want to be able to identify the document quickly!

Font style and weight should be separate properies
I think text properties should be more adapted to the CSS structure. This includes applying several styles to a character/paragraph but that topic has already been discussed here https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601021-adobe-indesign-feature-requests/suggestions/31112107-allow-multiple-character-styles-to-be-applied-to-c
This time, My suggestion is to separate weight (thin, light, regular, medium, bold, black, etc.) from style (italic, oblique, etc.). I know this would be a major change but it's worthy. This would make character styling much easier.
Maybe width (compressed, condensed, extended, etc.) property should be an option, but this isn't important.

Non-cloud versions needed as an option
Improve InDesign by creating non-cloud versions again as an option. The cloud is not ideal from a security perspective, nor from a constantly moving, time wasting upgrade perspective —which cascades into more problems when coupled with OS upgrades, printer issues, etc. Very consumer unfriendly. Have spent a week trying to resolve an upgrade problem over multiple platforms, and now stuck in a problematic OS to conform to your upgrades so I can work with a client.

Better numbering of Exported pages
Once in a while, we need to animate pages of a brochure, or make end credits with more typographic features than After Effects allows.
When exporting pages from InDesign (e.g. as .jpg), those are numbered:
Name.jpg
Name2.jpg
...
Name9.jpg
Name10.jpg
etc. This results in a list of files that, when sorted/imported in alphabetical order, are not in the right order.
It would be nice, when the names are like this:
Name00.jpg
Name01.jpg
...
Name09.jpg
Name10.jpgEven better would be when InDesign allows us to make a template for the output name, so we can decide ourselves how the sequential files…

Section Styles
Often we need to apply styling, such as a shaded background, to not just an individual paragraph, but to a SECTION which is composed of multiple paragraphs.
There is no easy way to do this via style sheets. Duplicating all the individual paragraph styles again and adding the 'shaded' properties to each one is way too tedious and fussy.
It would be nice if we could have SECTION STYLES. This would function like a 'wrapper' encompassing multiple paragraphs. That way we could select a passage of text and easily apply things like shading, borders, and indents to it. See attached…

Formatting page ranges for cross-references and indexing
It would be good to be able to change the coding in the format of cross-referenced page numbers (and Indexing cross-references) so that instead of the two cross-referenced pages displaying [236]-[238], they could display [236]-[8] or [236]-[38]. Formatting page ranges now ALL has to be done manually, because publishers don't typically use the full number in the second of a range.

Stop resetting the Apps after every update
Every time you update InDesign the Workspace is reset. This is exhausting! I understanding you want to parade any new features, but why does this update have to make me start again with the UI? It's infuriating and only done as a piece of Marketing for Adobe.
Look we love you all OK? You don't need to keep flirting with us, just leave my settings the way they were – you know you can.

4K screens
Stop redimensioning the user interface, please. I've got a 15,6" 3840x2160 screen, everything is so little. Last update proportions were good.

Need a Tab with GREP/Style Change setting instead of just decimal
SHORT DESCRIPTION: A new type of tab which will accept multiple align characters in a GREP-like statement and/or align on a style change.
The video provides a longer description. In tables involving figures and footnotes, a decimal tab is often not enough. What if the footnote is a number, or the footnote is surrounded by parenthesis? These are things which our clients specify for tables in the financial reporting industry, but apply to other industries as well.
If we could specify multiple characters to align upon, in a GREP-like "or" statement, that would help. Or the ability to align on…

Add an import options dialogue for importing InCopy documents into InDesign
Just like when importing Word documents, you can select what stylesheets and attributes to bring into the InDesign or InCopy document, add the same options dialogue window when importing InCopy documents into InDesign. Oftentimes the writer of the InCopy story doesn't use the same stylesheets as the InDesign document. In my case, I build newspapers and we are constantly improving the design and simplifying the naming process for stylesheets. The reporters forget to use the template and therefore old styles or misnamed styles get brought into the document. There are ways around this of course, but when I need to…
