Able to insert paragraph numbers in table of contents instead of page numbers for Chapter mini-toc
I have a chapter mini-toc that requires paragraph numbers instead of the default page numbering. it woiuld be really nice to be able to define variables or attributes and use them accordingly.

Cross-reference window really too small
I have to cross-reference dozens and dozens (not to say hundreds and hundreds) of items according to their item number. Of course, they all have a paragraph style and can be found, but not easily: the dialog box for the cross-reference is way too small, displaying only 6 items at the time and we need to scroll and scroll and scroll. On top of that, the items do not appear in alphabetical (or in this case by increasing number) but just randomly. Hair loss guaranted and nerve breaking after an hour of work on the menu too. Microsoft Office Compatibility
Documentation, documents and colors in Microsoft Word document come in differently.
It would be much better for us to work more with Office programs.
Please fix it.

pasting to layer
When pasting, it would be nice to be able to not have to stop to select layer when there is only one layer open and simultaneously have to stop to address error message saying prev layer used is locked or hidden etc. I frequently just want stuff pasted into doc and don't care at the time which layer it falls on and do not always wish to organize as I paste etc.
the same principal applies to dragging from cc library too.

Error in InDesign
There is since several (!) updates an error in InDesign which is really stupid!
If you split the document into two windows (with the button on the right bottom) you should be able having two contents of a document. This worked for years without any problem. Bust since several version this function makes only nonsense!

Text Variable "Running Header" to work across indvidual Indesign files within a Indesign Book
"Running Header" working across multiple indesign files within a book would allow a more modular approach to book production: common elements such as headers and footers can changed globally within a book, that shares some of its content i.e. individual indesign files, with another book but whose headers and footers must be different.

The KEYBOARD INCREMENTS part of Units and Increments preferences should application level not document level.
I have to go into this panel multiple times a day to change this from 2 to 1.
It should be application level, because it all relates to how much I expect text to move when using keyboard shortcuts. Or at least let me toggle it or override.
I think this is like if my custom keyboard shortcuts were document level and I had to set them back up every time I got a file made by someone else.24 votes -
Total book pages variable
It would be VERY USEFUL to have a variable for the total pages of the book that updates automatically.

Weird grey objects appearing on pages
I updated my OS today -- and I'm having major problems with InDesign. For one, it's running slowly. More distressing, however, are the strange dark grey angular objects that are appearing on pages. They appear and then disappear and then reappear. See attached screenshots. Those grey objects are NOT part of my page design. I have no idea where they are coming from. This is a file created two months ago, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. I'm using InDesign CC.

Adding feature for first page number in Text Variable
We work a lot in typesetting Journal which need to mention page number for each article. The 'last page number' in Text Variable are very useful and I wish to have an option for first page number in the feature. In current situation, I have to change the first page number manually if the pagination changed.

Enable switching of pages in imported pdfs
I wish there was a way to change the page of an imported multi-page pdf instead of going to relink the image (to the same file) and selecting the page with the import options clicked. This would save me so much time. All it would require is a page up/down button in the links palette that would only be visible when a multi page pdf was linked in the document.

Make smart guides work on the pasteboard
Smart guides are a really helpful feature but they currently do not work on the pasteboard area of a document. I frequently use the pasteboard to create design elements which I then move onto the page. This would be so much easier if we had the same guides functionality across the workspace. There doesn't seem to be any logical reason for smart guides to stop working once you move to the pasteboard.

Enable Hyperlinks to Stay Live in PDFs ... Even After Importation into InDesign
Hi folks
We have figured out a 'work-around' to the problem of maintaining live hyperlinks in PDFs throughout the entire exporting/importing process in InDesign. However, it's purely a bandaid - although it works well. It would be great to have this process built in as a feature. I've attached a PDF with our workflow methodologies for your review.

I've been waiting for a long time for the Document-font folder to be out of sync with the Indesign document. One should be able to determine the place itself.
If I have many Indesign Docs (in campaigns sometimes several hundred) I have to either install the fonts or just in any folder where an Indesign Doc is located in a document font folder.2 votes -

Ignore pasteboard
I would like to "ignore pasteboard" when running spell-check. Often I have extra text on the pasteboard that I don't want to delete, but I don't want to wade through while spell-checking.
Related to that -- it would be great if we could indicate certain frames we don't want to spell check. I do publications that have long lists of names that take forever to work through. I don't need to spell check them. Or maybe an "ignore capitalized words" function could do that.
These would be enormously helpful to editors! Thanks.

Hiding Pages in a Document
It would be helpful to hide pages in a way similar to hiding columns in Excel. I don't want the information gone, I just need to minimize it so I can focus on the specific pages I need. Accessing this action via a right click in the pages menu would be ideal.
