When writing text in certain Indic scripts, InDesign does not render the font correctly. For example, using the Padauk font for the Myanmar script, the following string renders the Medial Ra (U+103C) around the consonant Na (U+1014) instead of the consonant Ma (U+1019).
This bug is a large blocker when dealing with Indic text in InDesign.11 votes
In this blog article there a great description how indesign can massively improving the handling with fonts and their opentype features...

I often use captions (in a separate text frame) aligned at the bottom of the page with the bottom line of the body text and/or an illustration. If the leading of captions and body text is different – which is often the case – It would be useful to be able to align only the last line of the caption to the baseline grid just as it is possible to "only align first line to grid.".20 votes
It makes no sense to show the »O« if there are no Open Type features. But it slows down the workflow: every time you move the mouse to the O to see if there are maybe some alternatives – and there are not – you loose time. Not very much time, but it adds up.31 votes
Can you make the 'find font' window scaleable please! Across Indesign and Illustrator. It is so annoying to not be able to enlarge the missing fonts box to see all the fonts that are missing at once. Particularly when you have to jump between Suitcase.
If it could also indicate what foundry type of font is missing (Open type or Postscript) etc then that would mean NOT having to guess which type of font needs to open.2 votes
Text from a paragraph style used in a variable does not carry any character styling.
Define a variable using the text of a specific paragraph style. Add character styles to the text (or use a GREP style) and when the text is
pulled" by the variable the character style is not reflected.
Often this is used for running headers and footers. Example: if the registered trademark symbol is added to the text, it is regular case in the variable.
This also really screws up the ToC when the paragraph style is used in a ToC10 votes

I think it would be great when setting Tabs, this would snap to the document grid. Saves a lot of time in contrast to setting each tab numerically.
Another great addition would be the possibility to Distribute tabs. Comes in handy with imported text where sequential standard tabs were used.3 votes
The new endnote feature in InDesign 2018 might be an improvement in some cases, but in the case of complex layouts with a lot of unlinked text frames within a same piece (magazine layouts) it is really not intuitive or helpful.
There should be an option for the user to disable it when he judges it useful, rather than to be forced to work around it.
A great feature would be if InDesign could add hyphenation rules automatically when when using discretionary hyphens. A pop-up window that asks if you want this word to hyphenate on every instance of the word where you insert the hyphen the first time. I find it a bit too tedious to make new H-rules for every word. This is very relevant for non-english languages where the the pre-defined H-rules isn't very good. There is probably better ways to to this, but I think its time InDesign's hyphenation feature get a little bit smarter.5 votes
Outlining color fonts does not display the actual colored shapes, and in the case of Trajan & Gilbert, the outlining process is relying on the CFF shapes. As a user, I would expect to see the colored SVG shapes.5 votes
I often have several of the same fonts come up that I'm missing in the documents I'm working on from other people. I think it would be great to be able to have a user preference to define a specific font I have to replace it automatically rather than just a default font.
This could also help with fonts that are technically the same, but one is an open type vs post script version.11 votes
Add a feature similar to the Grammarly App to check for grammar and sentence structure errors when typing text in InDesign.17 votes
could we have two character styles applied to auto-numbering. One for the generated number and one for extra glyphs inserted in the "number" field in Bullets and Numbering. Or some other way to control the appearance/baseline shift etc. separate from the number itself.4 votes
It would be very useful if it is possible to have 2 [or more] footnote groups on 1 story.
For example, I have a main text, then there are 2 commentary texts, that both are linked with numbers [like footnotes] to the main text; & they are separately numbered & in separate frames.
Would be amazing!!!3 votes
I am a translator and once in a while, I am to write in Persian, having it added so I can check the spelling and all would be nice.2 votes

Ability to create a master text file that updates everywhere the content is used, much like DocsFlow or WordsFlow, but better.
I am constantly making catalogs and the proofing process is arduous because we always have to read through text to check for spelling errors, grammar mistakes, etc. If there was a way to create one Master text file (whether it’s an InDesign, Word, Excel doc, etc) and link it to any document, have one or more people edit it, have it update across the board and not override any local changes would be fantastic. Now, I know there are extensions you can use, such as DocsFlow and WordFlow, but the problem with these is that you cannot choose specific text from the Google doc you want to sync over to InDesign. For example:
I make a page in InDesign about jewelry. On the page, there are multiple separate text boxes about the different types of jewelry. If I have a file in Google docs that has descriptions about our various types of jewelry and sync it over, I’m not able to choose the exact description (paragraph) that I need to go in an InDesign text box. I can't have that. What I need is one Master text file with details about the content for every product we have, that can be synced over to InDesign. But I need to be able to CHOOSE exactly what text I want to sync over to one text box. If I have a bunch of different paragraphs on one Google doc and sync it over, it puts everything in that Google doc into one text box. I'm sure you can see the problem here.
Now, I have found a way around this by using cross referencing, but I can only do one paragraph at a time, and if one paragraph happens to be a line, such as a subheading, I will have to go back in again and choose the next paragraph of text. This is time consuming and I want to make this as efficient as possible.
I think this features should be able to take one Master (again, could be an InDesign, Word, or Excel doc), link it to an INDD file, update it both ways while a designer and editor are working on it at the same time, keep local edits, notify people about conflicting changes, choose EXACTLY what I need from the Master, and use whatever styles and fonts I wish in the local document that won’t be lost when the files are synced/updated.
I hope that made sense. But I think a feature like this would be beneficial for everyone!

Let the Layer defined as French overrule the used paragraph style. So you don't need the create a copy of the style for another language. The layer carries the dictionary, so UK layer = UK dictionary, FR layer = Fr dictionary. Easy and very smart.4 votes
Ability to create the new condition form a list of paragraph style or character styles
I would improve the ability to search on more than 1 paragraph/character style at once.
Sometimes you have to search more than one style – rather than go through each style at once, the ability to create a condition to select a range of styles would be useful.16 votes
