To resolve this issue, please click on the 'Update page and section numbers' option (present in the book panel's hamburger menu) after opening any book(created in any previous version) for the first time in 20.0

This is happening to me as well. Every book document, new and old, starts from page 1, even if it is removed and then readded to the book. I have reset my preferences, and this is happening even with fresh default settings. I have also tried editing the preference option that says "Use Absolute Numbering," but all this does is change the pages panel to also show pages starting from 1. I also have the books set to continue numbering from the previous document, but InDesign seems to be ignoring that.

The only solution I have found is to manually change the first page of each chapter to start numbering at the page I know it should be. This is obviously not ideal because if any preceding chapters change their page count, the chapter will still retain the old page number.

This is a bug, and it needs to be fixed immediately as this makes InDesign useless for anything other than single documents.

Figured out what was happening. Apparently InDesign 2024 is incompatible with a Microsoft mouse. Solution is to download the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center (or update to the latest version). Click on "Wheel," then "Identify programs that don't scroll correctly..." and select InDesign.

It's actually happening with a USB mouse too. Zooming in/out is especially wonky. Trying to zoom in causes InDesign to zoom all the way out.

This has been happening to me too. I'm getting a little bit of scrolling but it doesn't work most of the time. I thought it was my mouse at first but every other app is working fine. InDesign 2024 is unusable without scrolling.

To identify the cause of this issue, we had started our investigation with the aim to resolve it. You might have also received email from us seeking more details to help in our investigation.

We’ve concluded our investigation and came up with the finding : Either the issue is fixed in the latest release of InDesign or the issue was intermittent in nature at the time of its reporting and is not reproducible now.

We recommend you to upgrade to the latest version of InDesign 2020 (if you’re not already on it). It contains a lot of stability fixes.

If you still face this issue even after updating to the latest version of InDesign, please submit the crash report to us. (The guidelines to submit crash are available at (https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/submit-crash-reports.html)
We seek your support in our continual effort to improve InDesign.

The amount of time this would save is RIDICULOUS. If I have objects that need to appear a certain distance from the text—such as an unanchored sidebar or textbox—I have to make two separate styles, one for left pages and one for right pages, and if anything moves so that a page is deleted or added, I have to go through and reapply the appropriate left-right style to every single object.

Honestly this would be great for ANY numbering, not just footnotes.

Currently I am using a workaround that might work for your footnotes too—basically, you set your numbered paragraph style to Level 2 of a list and check the box so that numbering restarts after a previous level. You then go into another paragraph style (such as your chapter number style) and make it a numbered list for the same list, Level 1. Set it to start counting at 0. Under Numbering Style in the field, remove all text so it is blank.

This makes the Chapter Number paragraph technically be a numbered list, which is a problem if you export to epub. But in visual terms, it will make your numbering restart after each Chapter Number style.

But really, InDesign should just have an option in the numbering styles section to "Restart numbering after any other paragraph style."

THIS. I have to spend way too much time creating extra master pages and applying them to avoid this specific issue.

If I drop an item on the left page and a single pixel is visible on the right page, then if I apply the right page only that pixel should be visible, not the entire left image.
