[ID-4257184]InDesign 2025(v20.0) Performance issues: Delay or beach balls on basic operations
Problem:
InDesign Performance issues: Delay or beach balls observed on basic operations on Macintosh
Steps to Reproduce:
- We have reproduced one scenario in which the existence of the Documents Font Folder and Contextual Task bar results in some slowness.
- Other workflows causing slowness are being investigated - No reliable reproducible steps
Impacted workflows:
- Switching to InDesign
- Open/Closing of Document
- Edit/Scroll/Copy-paste/Highlight operation on Text
- Text disappears, illustrations disappear
- Imported or added text turns black until a style is applied.
- Font menu highlight not following my mouse movement
- Text will not change fonts until I click the mouse inside or outside the text box.
- Resize a document window, the corner flies below the screen border
- Click or Drag of the mouse
- Switching between tools
- "Waiting for UXP plugins to finish up remaining tasks."
Workaround:
- Disable Contextual Task Bar or remove Documents Font Folder
- Close the MAGNET application
- Revert to InDesign 19.5, No performance lag is observed.
- Restarting the machine and trashing the preferences seems to resolve the issue temporarily
- Disabling any font manager software seems to resolve the issue. One customer confirmed that disabling "Rightfont" resolved the issue.
- Uninstall-Reinstall seems to resolve the issue temporarily
- Turn off Preflight seems to resolve the issue temporarily
Note:
- The issue seems to be specific to the MAC platform only. Impacted macOS (Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura(maybe), Monterey)
- The issue seems to be specific to the MAC devices
- Apple MacBook Pro M1/M2/M3
- Apple MacBook Air M1/M2/M3
- Apple Max Studio M1/M2/M3
- Apple Mac mini M1/i7 Intel
- The issue exists for both old and new documents
Additional information needed:
- Are you opening the indd documents from the folder containing the Documents Font Folder?
- Is the "Contextual Task bar" shown? If yes, Disable it from "Window->Contextual Task bar"
- Screenshot of Memory usage while the issue is observed
- Please follow the below steps for InDesign 20.0.1.32 and InDesign PR 20.1.066 on Macintosh
- Open Terminal in full-screen mode
- Drag the InDesign application on the terminal (e.g. "/Applications/Adobe\ InDesign\ 2025/Adobe\ InDesign\ 2025.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ InDesign\ 2025")
- Copy the logs when you start facing the slowness in a text(.txt) file. Share the file with us at sharewithID@adobe.com.
We've just posted the latest InDesign PreRelease Build (20.1.0.70) in which we have done some performance improvements. We've also got this build validated by a couple of our Pro users and we believe that the Performance issue is fixed in this build.
We would like you to verify this new PreRelease build (available from the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App) and let us know if the performance issues that you were experiencing have got resolved with this build.
If you are not part of InDesign's Prerelease program and would like to join and try out the latest Prerelease build, do the following:
* Go to https://www.adobeprerelease.com/
* Sign in with your Adobe ID (the Email ID associated with your Adobe account)
* Select ‘Available Programs’
* Find ‘InDesign Prerelease’ and click ‘Join’
* Once you’ve joined, go to the Creative Cloud Desktop Application on your machine, click on 'Apps' in the section on the left
* Select the 'Pre-release' tab – there you will find the InDesign (Prerelease) build
* To check the Build number of the Prerelease build, hover the cursor over the name – you will see the Build number 'v20.1.0.070'
* Select ‘Install’.
Please let us know what you find. Based on your positive feedback, we'll make this fix available in an upcoming Release version of InDesign.
Looking forward to hearing your feedback on this new PreRelease build.
Thanks,
Adobe InDesign team

Using ID 2025 is simply horrible! It blows my mind how we pay a premium for this software and it can be so buggy

The latest version of InDesign is sunning extremely sluggish on MacBook Pro M1 Max running Sequoia.
Switching to Indesign, any interaction, editing text – all causes delays or beach balls. this is after a fresh install of InDesign and cleaning all caches.
Using an earlier InDesign works well.
This version is causing major delays. -

Any action I do freezes and shows the beach ball. Mac mini 3,2 ik7. 16GB RAM. Sequoia OS. Frustrating.

On Monterey 12.4. Updated to 2025 a couple of days ago. It was fine at first but today started getting the beach ball on every move. Initially I suspected the use of a handwriting font (a normal OTF though, not one of those newfangled things with textures) but am now getting it in every document. Tried deleting presets.

To Admin: Looks like this issue is happening regularly on nearly every click or drag of the mouse. It happens on ALL files regardless of what version they were created in - INDD 20.0 beachballs on almost every action, including opening and closing the documents.
If you scroll through these comments many have stated what machine and what OS they are running (including me). Are you all working on this or not? This is a critical bug and needs to be fixed. Forget about the AI stuff for a hot minute and solve this issue.

Same problem here. Im using a brand new M1 Max running Sequoia 15.1. Problems started as soon as InDesign 2025 was installed. Almost every file I try to work on is sssooooooooooooo slow!
Also receiving more messages from clients saying they're now unable to open PDF files that I email to them - never had any issues until I installed the new InDesign.

Same issue. Here is my information:
Mac M1 chip
Sequoia 15.0.1
Happens in all documents. If I restart my laptop and trash preferences it seems to temporarily be better but then as I work the issue comes back. I notice it most when I try to scroll or edit text. -

I have the exact same issues and have a possible reason. Upon quitting (during a spinning beachball) a message popped up and said "Waiting for UXP plugins to finish up remaining tasks.". It took about a minute for this to finally close and quit, but i would guess it has something to do with this. And here's the thing...I don't have any PlugIns activated that i know of.

I have the same experience after updating to Indesign 2025. It is not workable and very annoying. Apple M1 Max Mac studio, Sequoia 15.0.1.
Pleas fix this!!!!! -

I have the same experience. Apple M1 Pro, 16 GB Mac OS Sequoia. Slowness on any kind of document (new, old, existing). Slowness/lagging happens even when moving cursor, hovering menu etc. ANY kind of actions immediately after opening file.

not useable, Adobe developer probably all are running Mac Ultras, feel like even then it's probably slow. DOWN GRADE IMMEDIATELY.

Same here. Running on Apple M2 Pro 16GB Sequia 15. Load on every click.
Version 20.0 seems more like a downgrade than an upgrade. How can a text and image layout software load so much on such a fast CPU?

Same here! ID 2025, work on a Macbook 2,3 GHz Intel Core i5 quatre cœurs, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 Mo, 16 Go 2133 MHz LPDDR3, with Mac OS Sequoia 15.0.1 (24A348)
After uninstall-reinstall Indesign, it works "normally" during maybe 10min, then becomes very slow again.
