Major System Font Issue!
WHAT THE FONT!?!
Our publishing company recently ran the InDesign update (to 15.0.2) and have discovered some major font issues. I have narrowed it down to InDesign 15.0.2, macOS Catalina 10.15.3, and Suitcase Fusion 21.0.0. I actually don't think Suitcase has too much to do with this, because the problem occurred after the InDesign update, but it's our font management software so I'm including it. Basically it appears system fonts have become problematic with InDesign. Packaged files are suddenly showing up with lots of the dreaded pink. I have tested about everything I can. I even created some very simple type only files that are having system font issues as well. Sometimes the document will open ok and the fonts will appear fine. Then when I go to export, the system fonts turn pink. Sometimes the file can't open the fonts at all and they start out and remain highlighted pink. Other times it will open but them shut off a few seconds later. It's only happening with system fonts. I have included screen shots for reference. I hope this issue can be fixed asap because it's font chaos over here! Thank you.
The fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign – version 16.1
Please update to this version to get the fix.

The plot thickens. Today I noticed that the Font missing issue comes and goes. It was not working on my imac retina Catalina, indesign 15 version, but then for a brief moment after a PDF export it seemed to work. Then the font missing issue returned.

Hi! I'm sure many of us would take a discount on our monthly subscription until this show-stopping issue is fixed.

I am having the issue with Gill Sans on my Imac: Catalina 10.15.6
Indesign 15.1.1But not on my Macbook Pro where I have Catalina 10.15.5
And Indesign 14.0.1.Can it really be that in the age where updates are being installed automatically that we can't trust the two biggest companies in our industry to update our bread and butter software safely?

Any updates on this issue?

This is a major problem for me as well. Documents that functioned perfectly fine two weeks ago now show persistent inexplicable problems with Helvetica Neue, along the lines of all the previous issues in this thread.

Is there any news on this? I have just wiped my Mac and reinstalled to try and solve it but to no avail, I cannot complete client projects because their brand font won't show up!!! What can I DO??

I would really like to know where Adobe is at with the fix for this. I had just packaged and exported a catalogue for print for a client, and had the client ask "why the final press pdf has 'glitchy' fonts now". So embarrassing!!
I believe it's the same issue as flagged, the fonts were fine until the doc was packaged, then once packaged and re-opened some fonts (Gill sans mostly, but not only) were coming out with completely erratic tracking and also in weird garbled symbols (attached examples). As others have mentioned, this is happening randomly, sometimes when the file is opened there is no issue. The fact our client picked this up and how close we were to sending it to print, which would have cost us thousands, is just nowhere near good enough from a supposedly industry standard software company. We pay a premium price for the software, we expect a premium product.

I just shared this in another thread before finding out about THIS wonderful thread.
I have realized that InDesign doesn't tell the truth (not right now anyway). InDesign will TELL YOU that the font is missing AND it may even render the enter font in a different language BUT, in reality, the fonts are still there and if you export out as a PDF they will export out accurately. Initially, seeing your entire document render in an alternative language is alarming to say the least but when I realized InDesign likes to play these games, I've learned to ignore it. I'll export out, close out, shut down and then re-start the program. Doing this is a pain in the asset and a huge waste of time so, I am hoping that Adobe finds a solution because as a pro corporate designer, time is of the essence. But now I know, you can't always believe what InDesign is showing you.
Another person posted in another thread that when she removed the fonts folder from the packaged folder, her font issues were resolved. PLEASE NOTE ... I have NOT YET tried this as a solution.
Another professional recommended using a professional font manager ( other than Font Book ) but many people commented that doing so DID NOT resolve the issue.
I have tried the solution that Jennings posted below but that only works temporarily. The next time I opened the file, I would experience the same issues I had previously.
Cheers! to Adobe + Apple finding a way to play well together in the sand box (again)!

I found a glitch in the matrix and a possible workaround until a fix is in.
1. Open the document that contains the issue with your missing font/s
2. Create a brand new empty doc with the exact same specs: size, margins, bleed, etc.
3. Return to your original document and copy & paste each page (as is) into your new doc
4. Be sure to "Paste in place" so that you perfectly match the original
5. You should notice that your missing fonts are now accepted in the new doc
6. Save your new doc and export your PDF as normalGood luck

Is there really no new info this issue? It really seems like this should be the #1 issue on your priority list to fix, given that this has been happening since at least March. This really is aggravating. I have clients that use Avenir, Helvetica and Gill Sans, all fonts that don't currently function properly in InDesign, that makes my ability to get them branded designs way harder than it should be.

ID 15.1.1 (MacOS Catalina)
Glad I'm not using Avenir, as it's rubbish enough with Museo Sans Rounded which is the house font of a major client. The parent company decided to update their branding which meant changing from the Rounded version to just Museo Sans (square as opposed to rounded corners). However, after I did one job using the new font, it was decided to delay the change to the subsidiary I work for and, as the new font comes with Typekit (CC Fonts), it had been activated and now there are major issues with my existing Museo Sans Rounded which is one of my system fonts and is the only font that now shows in the fonts drop down with the suffix (OTF) plus an additional copy! As there are only 3 weights: 300, 500 and 700 it seems odd that after 300, in the font dropdown, the only weight available is now 900 which, coincidentally, is one of the weights of Museo Sans. To overcome this I have to keep reselecting the font. This all began after the upgrade to 15.1.1 so it’s it astonishing to find that a DTP application has an error as basic as a fonts issue. I always assumed that upgrades were meant to improve performance,I’m beginning to wonder if it isn’t the underlying cause of other problems I’m experiencing with exporting to PDF and ID freezing up. Come on Adobe, get your act together.

I've been using Adobe products since they first appeared and this is the WORST bug ever...
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I open a document I get this message - despite the font being loaded and available to other applications... and EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I generate a pdf the font unloads itself and I have to go to Suitcase and reactivate Helvetica Neue Medium ... which given that every day I am creating and generating technical documents is a massive reduction in productivity and stress I and other designers do not need... it started on one of the updates a few months ago - but I can see other users have experienced it for a while... GET IT FIXED.

Any movement on this issue? As a designer we have to adhere to brand standards for our clients. You know this of course, but this seems insanely critical to fix.
Like, by critical I mean my work has come to a screeching halt because Indesign does not recognize installed fonts.
I have never in 25 years posted a comment until now. This is really bad.
Any ETA on a fix? v15.0.3 did not fix the issue. Anyone have a workaround? I've exhausted all avenues.
Thank you.

15.0.3 did not fix the issue. Avenir is our corporate font like many of the others have noted. What is the status of the fix? This is causing major issues. Thanks in advance for your prompt reply!

It was after packaging that I experienced all of these font issues. Opening the idml and saving under a new name seemed to fix the issue. Worth a try! Not sure if this has already been mentioned. I'm still holding my breath!

I have been having issues with fonts since the most recent update for InDesign: 15.1.1. I've never had any issues worth contacting Adobe about, but since updating all my apps (when I went to InDesign's 15.1.1), I have had issues in Lightroom, Photoshop and InDesign. The particular issue with InDesign revolves around font's showing they are missing, when they aren't. I'm a stickler for packaging fonts and links, so I knew this was a problem with the software instantly. Upon first contacting Adobe about it, I was met with an unhelpful individual in the chat who despite my persistence told me nothing was wrong with the software and it was only an issue with the font. And they told me to contact the manufacturers of my fonts. I have a tendency to use Avenir for many projects, so while I had many files struggling with this font, there were others I had issues with. This problem is completely sporadic, and when I try to relink fonts, it shows they're right there in the software, but I'm still unable to link them. After discussing with another individual who was actually willing to assist, they discovered the issue was happening to others as well. I was told they're working on fixing this issue, but they said to post in this group, as well. I appreciate the assistance I found with the new individual and their help, but it does seem like the updates that happened all at the same time as Adobe's 15.1.1 has caused issues across the board.

With me, the problem is not nearly as severe with 15.1.1 as it was with the previous versions. It is still happening, but closing and reopening the InDesign document resolves the issue with unfound fonts.
What is odd is that the only app on my Mac (Catalina 10.15.6) that is unable to find fonts is InDesign. Why is that an expensive, subscription, professional app can't find fonts, when every other app can? It makes no sense.
It almost seems that InDesign purposely introduced the font problem to force users to only use Adobe Fonts. -

Has this issue been fixed? I'm tired to get these missing fonts issue every time I open an Indesign file. It's like a nightmare!!! Btw I'm using ver 15.1.1 and regretting for updating my Indesign :(
Adobe, please fix it ASAP!!!

I'm also having major font issues. I've tried deleting my preference files and that seemed to fix the problem until I started resetting my panels and I can watch the fonts pop right out and the same font error window comes up.
This is a huge headache, as all of our documents have relied on this one font family for years.

SO I updated to InDesign 15.1.1 and now have crazy font problems. This font issue is really causing us major headaches. If I open InDesign and open a file I have no issues, but if I try to open another file, InDesign tells me half the fonts aren't available even though they are, and have been, installed on my system. Same thing if I open a packaged file from a client. If this is the first file to open after opening the app, no problems, but if try opening it without closing and reopening the app, half the fonts aren't recognized. Also have the same issue when trying to export to PDF. I get a message saying fonts aren't available. Never had this problem with previous versions. Getting extremely frustrated. I keep looking everyday in CC for an update that will fix this!!
