Major System Font Issue!
WHAT THE FONT!?!
Our publishing company recently ran the InDesign update (to 15.0.2) and have discovered some major font issues. I have narrowed it down to InDesign 15.0.2, macOS Catalina 10.15.3, and Suitcase Fusion 21.0.0. I actually don't think Suitcase has too much to do with this, because the problem occurred after the InDesign update, but it's our font management software so I'm including it. Basically it appears system fonts have become problematic with InDesign. Packaged files are suddenly showing up with lots of the dreaded pink. I have tested about everything I can. I even created some very simple type only files that are having system font issues as well. Sometimes the document will open ok and the fonts will appear fine. Then when I go to export, the system fonts turn pink. Sometimes the file can't open the fonts at all and they start out and remain highlighted pink. Other times it will open but them shut off a few seconds later. It's only happening with system fonts. I have included screen shots for reference. I hope this issue can be fixed asap because it's font chaos over here! Thank you.
The fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of InDesign – version 16.1
Please update to this version to get the fix.

Ridiculously frustrating problem. Please fix this ASAP. How did this even get past testing??

Avenir problems too, since Apple added it as a system font. Spending so much time trying to fix this. Is there any progress on this?

This is extremely frustrating. I've been dealing with this same issue since May. This is really a huge problem with my workflow and it's really irritating to pay a costly monthly fee and the programs not function properly.

Running inDesign 15.1.1 on a Mac (Catalina) and experience the following (which also occured BEFORE we updated from High Sierra to Catalina). We do not used Adobe's fonts (they are not enabled), but the fonts we have installed. Here is what happens:
open SOME files (fine)
open others, some fonts missing
close file with missing fonts, open again and it's fineHELP! This is frustrating ADOBE and we pay big $$$ for this to work correctly!

Yesterday started to use brand new InDesign. I was hammered right away with font problem. I'm new user and managed to mess up our catalogue with substituting fonts which were actually not missing. Luckily didn't hit save :D

I'm having a large document open fine then suddenly the Helvetica Neue Bold turns to Regular as if Bold isn't installed. I'm InDesign 15.1.1

same problem here. Helvetica and Avenir seem to be the biggest problem. Also seems to be the italic versions more than regular.

Same here- we have books going to press and it seems every time an update is thrust upon us it causes more issues than it solves. Photoshop is the same!

Interesting... I just tested Matt's suggestion about selecting the text and reselecting the current color, and magically every Avenir font in the file was ok. This was on a problem file that has been giving me Avenir issues for a while now. Great idea, Matt!

Very confused. I'm encountering the same issue and have been following this thread fro a while now, but I just found a weird reaction/possible fix? After highlighting the affected text, I picked the same color it was supposed to be (select red text and make it red again) and it magically relinked. I don't know if this works for anyone else, but it's better than praying to some eldritch god for a solution.

We are experiencing the same issue constantly. When the document is first opened, the dreaded "Missing Original Version (1 of XX)" pops up. It says the fonts are missing, but after you hit the "Cancel All" or "Next >>" button the fonts that were originally missing are not used in the document (Type -> Find/Replace Font...). It's very frustrating at the moment.
macOS Catalina 10.15.5, Adobe InDesign 2020 15.1.1, Suitcase Fusion 21.1.1

I'm on 10.14.6 Mojave on a brand new iMac, but still but experiencing these exact same problems with Avenir this morning. Wanted to add to the comments that it hasn't been fixed.
When exporting to PDF it sometimes knocks out the font and becomes glyphs and highlighted pink or it starts out okay when opening a document but then suddenly becomes glphs/highlighted pink. Or when initially opening document it doesn't work so close it down and open it up and it works again. Doesn't seem to matter if I have Suitcase Fusion open or not. -

Exactly the same issue here. Seems to be just Avenir font family at the moment, but problems are identical to those you've listed. InDesign making life difficult - once again...

Same complaint. Still not fixed in version 15.1.1 as of today. Intermittent issues. Upon opening some files, text appears as glyphs. When the file is closed and reopened it typically fixes it. Just today, I started having the same problem while working in a file. Closing and reopening fixed the problem, but while working several times I had to close and reopen. Please look into this!
