I lost all Save, Save As, Undo functionality (everything is grayed out). To save my work, I have to export as an IDML .

Lost all Save, Save As, Undo functionality while working.
To save my work, the only thing to do is to export as an IDML file. Force quitting to recover the file doesn't work. This has been happening to me since InDesign 5.5. I am currently using InDesign CC 2018. There are no particular steps, it happens at random. I can have several files open and it only happens to one file, or sometimes it's more than one file. It happens whether I'm working off of my Desktop or on our server.

As part of the investigation into the cause of this issue, we personally reached out to many of you over email. We have so far heard from only some of you.

Of the responses we have received, the conclusion we’ve come to is:
This issue was intermittent, happened once during the course of work but somehow got resolved and has not happened again. This issue can’t be reproduced now.

Over a period of time, this thread has not thrown any fresh clues on why this issue seems to occur randomly for some and then seems to resolve itself. So we’re closing this thread.

However, even though we’re closing this thread, if you again run into this issue any time on a consistent basis, please report it here on UserVoice (in a new thread) with supporting assets like:
A) a test file,
B) detailed steps to replicate the issue
C) any specific type of content that causes this
D) a screen recording, etc.
E) ID version, OS, etc.
(You can put the testing artifacts at a shareable location and share the link with us, reaching us at sharewithID@adobe.com OR rkiran@adobe.com.
This will help us immensely in determining a proper fix for this issue.

    I am having this issue and it's driving me nuts - no undo's and won't save files also have to save as IDML or risk losing the lot. Any fixes for this ?

    I'm having this issue as well. Solved it by deactivating all fonts and opening the file again with only the fonts activated which are in the file.

    The problem appears when inserting or moving a picture in the design.

    I'm experiencing this issue as well during a book project. I have a (new) wacom tablet attached to my macbook pro. Wacom drivers are up to date

    I am experiencing this issue during a book project, especially after running the index to the book. It initially seemed to be related to the preferences. I have cleared old preferences using information at this link https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2405286.

    Anyone able to resolved the undo issue yet? I'm only able to undo 3 times until it stops working. Any suggestions would be great!

    I was able to reproduce the issue by following these steps precisely in this order:

    1) Double click on a text box
    2) Select all text (by pressing Command + A) and deleting it
    3) Attempt to Undo by pressing Command + Z

    After step 3, the Undo command failed and the text didn't reappear in the text box. It was at this point I noticed undo was greyed out along with all save functions.

    Once I discovered this, I closed my document (losing changes). The issue was there again after re-launching the InDesign app. After spending some time working in the app, the issue seemed to have disappeared while working with text and undoing. I still can't use the regular Save function, though; the only option available right now is "Save As...", which I -am- able to use to use to write over/replace the original INDD file.

    Me too! I'm working on a project for school and InDesign won't let me undo or save. This just started happening now. PLEASE fix this!!!

    I was having this problem, so I contacted support at someone on the support team conducted a screen-share with my computer and troubleshooted InDesign and reconfigured it, and now everything works. I exported all the files I had open and couldn't save as IDML files and I was able to open all of them after the troubleshoot. This may work for you too!
