  1. [ID-4272869] InDesign adds Blank space to top during PNG export for converted documents

I booted up 2026 (version 21.0) and opened a file that I was working on literally yesterday. I have a text box over a solid fill background shape. When I exported them both together yesterday, it worked as expected. Today, it exports with an obnoxious blank space (or filled space if I uncheck "Transparent Background") at the top.

Absolutely nothing changed with the file, it's just happening in 2026 and not in 2025. Comparison attached.

Workaround: Export the document to IDML

  3. Export to Flat psd --- not flat

Export As..., option 'Flat image' does not result in an actual flat image. the result is a layer in Photoshop, instead of a Background / flat image.
Why is this important? Because in InDesign, only really flat grayscales can be given a color. Unfortunately, the result of the Ai export has to be flattened in Photoshop before it can be used to color it in InDesign.

  4. won't place images mac os tahoe

Mac OS Tahoe, INDD version 21.2 and can't place a jpg. That simple. Seems silly report. Files open, anc can't be modified, error here, error trying to close. But main problem, can't place a jpg.

  6. Bug: Object effects are rendered in wrong position in PNG output

In the attached document, the drop shadow behind the photo is rendered in the wrong place (about 30px lower) in the PNG output (compare to the PDF which is correct).

This also causes the gold background colour to render in the wrong place as well (also 30px lower) as it's applied as a transparency effect, so I guess the effect of the shadow is stacking with the colour and they are both being rendered lower down the image than intended.

  7. Any Indesign version after 20.5.1 will not export .pngs properly (grey boxes)

When I create a file which has images linked in it (such as a .png file) and then export the file as a .png file as I need, the placed image files export as grey boxes. This has been an ongoing issue every since the version 21 update. The only solution for me has been to go back to version 20.5.1. I keep hoping this will be fixed in the updates that have come out since, but it has not.

  8. Shadow in exported PNG

Shadow in Indesign are fine, but when I export as PNG it looks like the shadow has been moved. I've already tried to delete and re-create the object or copying everything into a new document but nothing works.

  10. Placed TIF files export as grey boxes when exported to PNG format

InDesign 19.5, macOS 14.6.1, Apple M1 Max chip

    1. With no document open, set the default view to "Fast" by choosing View > Display Performance > Fast Display.

    2. Create a new document, and place a TIF image on the page.

    3. Choose File > Export, and select PNG for the export format.

The TIF image will export as a gray box. It should export as the actual image. Even if you choose View > Display Performance > High Quality Display and export again, the TIF image will still export as a gray PNG.

If you close the file, change the InDesign default…

  11. PNG export affected by "Display Performance" Settings

    Affected InDesign versions:

I could reproduce it with InDesign 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and Prerelease 2025. From what I've found here so far, however, the problem has existed since at least 2020.

    Reproduce:

    • "Display Performance" set to "Typical"
    • place a PNG or PSD with semi-transparent areas in InDesign (image for testing: semitransparent.png)
    • export to PNG

This also happens if the PNG export is triggered before the document has been fully rendered and the "Display Performance" settings are set to ‘High Quality’. This therefore also affects automated processes, e.g. on InDesign Server.

    Expected result:

    • high quality output with correctly rendered transparencies…

  12. PNGs will often export at low resolution unless "high quality display" is selected

I have a graphic which includes a cropped part of a PDF which is a CAD drawing. I select it all, export to a PNG at 600dpi. Put it into Word and when I zoom in it's fairly pixelated: definitely not 600dpi.

If I select the placed PDF, turn the display performance to "High Quality Display" and re-export, it's a beautiful 600dpi file. This screams "bug" to me.

I'll add this to another bug report of mine, which is that if a link is modified or missing, you won't get a warning when exporting a PNG that uses it (you…

  13. PDF/vector rasterize fail

Pdf rasterization has been bad for many years, a long time ago I reported this problem with complex graphics when thin lines appear in the image when saved to jpg. Previously, at least a pdf from indesign could be opened in photoshop, which had a different rasterization, but it has been the same for a long time, and when rasterizing SOME pdfs, it always creates thin lines in different places depending on the resolution...

Here is a sample QR directly generated in indesign when saved to jpg and in the preview in the application shows these thin lines!!!

    I would…

  14. No warning about missing links when exporting to jpeg or png

If I have a document with a missing link, I get a warning when exporting to PDF that there are missing links. If I am exporting a jpeg or a png of the same document, I don't get any warnings at all about missing links and simply get pixelated graphics in the output.

Exporting to a bitmap image should have the same warnings about missing links that exporting to PDF does.

    1. InDesign 18.4 (Windows), but this has been the case for several versions now.
    2. Place a graphic, then move the linked file so that it shows up as missing. Export…

  15. JPG exports render horizontal "rips" in the image

Exporting an image as a jpg is bugged and renders horizontal rips in the image. Easily seen in this photo of power lines. Compare with a png-export which looks fine.

  16. export row

    InDesign 18.3 x64 Windows

When exporting PNG images, INDD errs on the side of light exports at edges vs. rounding to a surrounding black level as demonstrated in the attached PDF.

  18. CMYK JPG export does not preserve the correct dpi export information

To demonstrate this bug, I've made an A4 landscape document as shown in image 1.
If I export this to an RGB PNG using the settings in image 2, the image exports as expected and all figures - including the ppi - are correct as shown in image 3.
If I export this to a CMYK jpgs using the settings in image 4, the image exports but the expected ppi of 300 ppi is incorrect and it has exported at 72ppi, though the pixel dimensions are correct (shown in image 5).
If I export this to an RGB jpg using…

  19. Bug: Quality issue when exporting 72dpi jpg from InDesign

Sudden quality issue especially around text when exporting 72dpi jpg from InDesign vs exporting 300dpi jpg from InDesign then opening in PS, downsizing to 72dpi and exporting as jpg again. Mainly on Vector text but also noticable in images especially when creating gifs. Noticeable pixelation around text edges.

Examples and export setting screen shots below including side by side comparison (original 72dpi InD export left + 300dpi InD export reduced to 72dpi in PS right).png

Running macOS Monterey on Mac Studio 2022 & Latest InDesign 17.4.

Has only happened since the latest software update. This happened a few months back…

  20. Linked Image Canvas Resampling Pixelated Issue

When a linked image canvas size greatly exceeds the image frame size, the linked image is pixelated in both the InDesign preview and the PNG export. JPG exports do not exhibit this issue.

Please note in the attached images two different linked PSD files. The file on left is cropped to the extent of the rasterized letter 'a'. In the file on the right, the rasterized 'a' has the same pixel dimensions as the first, but the Photoshop document canvas is much larger. This results in a poorly resampled PNG export.
