  1. Dynamic baseline related unit of measurement

Please consider the addition of a dynamic unit of measurement that relates to the document’s baseline. Such a unit will make it possible to express various parameters throughout the design as a multiplication or division of the document’s baseline.

We would for example be able to express a header’s leading as twice the number of baselines, or a paragraph’s space after in any number of baselines.

The unit’s relation to the document‘s baseline means that it’s dynamic: whenever you change the baseline, all values expressed in this unit will change accordingly. There will be no more need to adjust these…

Need More Info  ·  Anonymous responded

    Hi All,

This indeed a great suggestion. I wanted to understand a little more about this request.

    1. The way this request is described its majorly about figuring out how to change the various text attributes in a single step rather than having to change multiple styles to make that happen. It would helpful if you can mention which all attributes you all would want to be dependent on the baseline (space before/after, size, leading any other).
    2. Which kind of documents (magazines, brochures, books etc.) do you see this to be more important for you.
    3. Wouldn’t a similar method (not sure if we could base it on baseline though!!) for changing the layout also help, if you could define the sizes of objects in relation to the page size. Do you think extending this feature to the layout also makes sense.
    4. If you can share some files…

  2. Use regular selection tool with grouped objects

I would like to be able to select multiple objects within a group using the regular Selection Tool. Currently InDesign only allows me to select 2 items within a group. If I try to select a third object it "exits" the group. The Direct Selection Tool allows me to select multiple grouped objects, but will sometimes select just a vertex or other sub-element of an object. It would be great if the regular selection tool could select as much content within a group as desired. Thanks!

  4. I opened my Indesign program and a message asked if I could provide input on how to improve Indesign. Here is my reply.

I tried to write this response in the "Help Improve Adobe Products" window that opens up on launch of Indesign, but I ran out of space:

Indesign has layer after layer after layer of instructions on how do even the most common things. The problem is that in order to understand one layer, you have to understand at least the terminology and concepts of the other layers. These days, when you open the box for many devices there is a quick set up document included. I recommend that you do something like that. But not with instructional videos. Someitimes you…

  5. Allow saving to previous version format

I upgraded from CC2017 to CC2018 (hoping it would fix some issues I've submitted elsewhere) not realizing that my co-workers who are still on CC2017 would then not be able to open my .indd files. Saving as .idml is a really, really suboptimal solution. I know other software I've had allows you to save in previous versions' formats; why can't you? Also, it would have been nice to know this would happen before I upgraded...

  6. Make the Keybaord shortcuts consistent across InDesign, Illlustrator and Photoshop

Plz make the keybaord shortcuts consistent across InDesign, Illlustrator and Photoshop.

For common operations, the shorcuts are different across 3 apps.

  7. Export images with zero padding

When you export the naming is inpractical.
    name.png
    name
    2.png
    name_12.png

Could you at least enable automatic zero padding like this:
    name01.png
    name
    02.png
    name_12.png

Every week i have to rename at least 9 Files because of this.

  8. Previously saved versions of a document

It would be very helpfull if InDesign stored a log of previously saved versions of one particualr document. For example, if I have worked on a file for multiple weeks and oversaved all of the changes that were made to the document, but then suddenly the client wanted to have some of the changes undone I could easily find the version where those changes hadn't been done. That would save the hassle of saving multiple documents or whole buch of additional pages inside the document.

  10. cross references: character styles and case

At present, a cross reference takes its case from the destination. If I have used small caps for the destination style, but am referencing it from within text, I want to capitalise the term, but the cross reference takes its case from the destination, not the typed text.

To get what I want I have to cause a problem for the cross reference (yellow triangle with exclamation mark) and manually fix the capital start letter, or use hyperlinks and text anchor – a two-step action making a destination and hypherlink that cross referencing was supposed to fix.

    It would save…

  11. Help page gives incorrect information regarding PageMaker file conversion

Searched InDesign support for "pagemaker file conversion"
The top article (dated March 2017) is titled "Convert QuarkXPress and PageMaker documents to InDesign". Here's the address of this page: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/converting-quarkxpress-pagemaker-documents.html This article is part of the "InDesign CC User Guide." In the right hand column, it says it applies to InDesign CC. The first sentence in the Pagemaker section is "InDesign can convert document and template files from Adobe PageMaker 6.0 and later." It proceeds to give directions. I have come to find out that these instructions cannot be followed in InDesign CC, but only in InDesign CS6. This resulted in…

  13. GPU-Acceleration on Windows

It would be brilliant to have this as an option especially since more and more people are using high DPI/4K displays and the CPU is not capable of allowing for smooth zooming/scrolling/panning in most cases. It's working perfectly fine with Photoshop and rather good with Illustrator so I can't see why this shouldn't be possible with InDesign as well.
On my 4K Dell XPS 15 it's quite a pain to scroll through the document or zoom in and out, laggy as hell although this is a very poweful machine!

Moving the feature request to the product backlog.

  14. Bring back recent files

I loved seeing recent files every time I hit open because I could find what I was looking for with a glance. Working with graphics, I am very visual, so these thumbnails saved me a lot of time.

  15. Add Australian dictionary to Indesign

Please add Australian Dictionary to Indesign. It was once doable but complicated to add the Hunspell dictionary to Indesign with earlier versions but now is impossible as the files that need changes are locked. I'm sure you have thousands of Australian users paying about $900 per year. This is a fix that I would have thought would only take five minutes to do

  16. Export the complete Text

To make the text contents of a document available for other users or applications one should be able to export the whole text (meaning every piece of text in the whole document. To a single text file (rtf or txt). Currently I am able to this with a plugin
(https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/text-exporter/) but I feel this should be within the scope of the program itself.

  17. Saving

It would be helpful if there were a revert feature is a TIME-STAMPED revert to previously saved - Or revert to the first time you exported a pdf... Something to that sorts would help if you've already hit save more than once.

  19. Let users know (via email) if they should update their system or not

Guys, if you could let us know if we (Mac users) should update our Macs or not, that would be great. You got our emails. You could just send one email to all registered users 'hi guys, our products are not ready for new version of your OS, please be careful with update'. It costs you nothing. That would save a lot of our nerves. Of course, we could check your website before updating, but it is so inconvenient.

  20. Change ID's file locating from absolute addresses to relative

When I change the name of my project folder, housing all of my ID and art/font folders, InDesign stops linking to the art folder. This is annoying. Is this happening because my art files are in a folder named something other than Links?
