  1. Integrate Optical Margin Alignment into Paragraph tab

Currently, the Story tab is a standalone tab, offering only one checkbox: the Optical Margin Alignment option. This functionality, in my opinion, is closely related to paragraph adjustments, such as paragraph alignment within text boxes. Given its nature, it seems more intuitive and efficient to integrate Optical Margin Alignment within the Paragraph tab or the main text formatting panel.

Adding the Story tab to my workspace alongside essential tabs like Character, Paragraph, and various styles consumes more horizontal screen space than necessary. Once positioned next to other panels, the tab's label, "Story," becomes difficult to read due to the limited…

  2. Make overset text + icon stand out better

Maybe it is just me grappling with this, but I find it extremely hard to see the overset text ‘+’ in the bottom right of the text frames. Sure, I can go to preflight panel and resolve everything from there, but I often fix many other things too as I go and work quite visually. If the box had a red fill and the + was white, it would stand out better. Currently I have to zoom way out to get an idea of where they are.

  3. measure and determine the height of a letter in millimeters or centimeters

Add a feature to InDesign that will allow you to measure and determine the height of a letter in millimeters or centimeters. I work in a studio that deals with environmental design and signage, and we constantly need to know the height of the characters in millimeters during work.
Today, the solution to the problem is to create a rectangle the same size as the size of the characters and see the size of the rectangle in millimeters, then adjust the size of the characters according to the rectangle, until it roughly fits. This is a really big problem and…

  4. Restore the 2022 version of Word Document Import Options

In the 2022 update there was a brilliant change to the way you could specify how Paragraph Styles and Character Styles from Word could be treated.

It allowed you to choose the key styles to focus on, apply your own InDesign Style to those, then apply an overriding single InD style to everything else by specifying "Any" in the hierarchy. This allowed you to get rid of swathes of junk styles you'd otherwise inherit from a messy Word file, reliably, and in one go.

Newer versions seem to have reverted to the old Text Import Options, where you must specify…

  5. AI Translation in future InDesign

Adobe Express now has built-in AI translation services for their product. Why is this not available in InDesign?

I'm not expecting 100% accuracy, we have translators to proof results, but this would be so much more efficient as a first-pass instead of exporting IDML to send to a service or through Trados software.

  6. Auto resize text to fit text box

Auto resize text to fit text box with a character limit would allow me to use it as a dynamic form that would be print ready.

  7. Conditional no-break in character styles

I want an option to make no-break in character style, but if it's impossible to keep text in frame, breaking would be possible.
For example, usually I don't want to break a hyperlink in text and if I make it no breaking, very long URL's makes it impossible to keep text running in text frames.
I think there is a workaround with GREP's but that's not really solid solution for this.

  8. Copy & paste formatted text between apps

It is beyond baffling that Adobe is so incompetent they have not been able to implement a way to copy and paste formatted text between their own applications. There can only be two reasons we can’t copy and paste formatted text between (for example) Illustrator and InDesign: Either Adobe is unwilling to add this feature or Adobe is incapable of adding this feature.

Even a way to save formatted text between programs then place it would be an improvement over the nothing we have now.

  9. spell check - add option to limit to one layer

Please, please add an option to limit spell check to one layer only throughout the document - for example the currently chosen layer or the layer with a specified language. When doing translations of children books we need to work with two text layers - one for the original layer and one for the translation. When running spell check at the end of a translation it is always highly annoying to have Indesign jump randomly between the layers resp. languages. This bug renders spell check almost useless for translation-projects as Indesign usually chooses to stay in the wrong layer. Btw:…

  10. Option to strip out overloaded Mac system fonts like NOTO in font menu

Later Mac OS's install 100's of fonts that cannot be removed. They clog up the Font menus badly. It makes font selection a nightmare. Noto is but one.

  11. Give us the option to ignore certain instances of spelling & grammar errors, just like Adobe Illustrator.

Just like Adobe Illustrator, please add optional checkboxes to either include/exclude things like "repeated words" or "uncapitalized start of sentence" instances. Also... Illustrator has a section of the dialog box where you can optionally ignore (1) uppercase words, (2) roman numerals, and (3) words with numbers. This would be a great feature to implement within InDesign as well, especially since InDesign is the go-to program for layouts.

  12. Hyphenation (H&J): Don’t break compound words except at hyphens

Compound words should only be divided at existing hyphens when dividing words for line breaks.

Example: “award-winner” should break only after “award-“ not as “award-win-ner”

Other: “heart-stopping” can break after “heart-“ but never “heart-stop-ping”

  13. text. direction. button. Give it back.

I have InDesign CC, I think it's multilingual, and now I have to do a layout entirely in Arabic. After a whole day of trying to work out how to do it I realized that the reason it was so difficult to change text direction from LTR to RTL is BECAUSE THERE IS NO MORE BUTTON (I used to accidentally activate it on my old photoshop, that is why I remember there being one)

    ANYWAY
two days in and I still can't find the direction option ANYWHERE and at this point I'm royally ****** because I'm either too dumb to…

  14. Link Font Size with Leading

As someone who is often laying out text in large booklet type documents, I often need to adjust text and leading on text to visually suit the design Im working on. An annoying function Ive run into (definitely not the end of the world) is that if I may need to adjust the size of the font and the leading of it to suit what I need... If I then adjust the size of the text, the 'custom' leading size doesn't constrain to the size of the font as you increase it.

This would be an awesome feature to be…

  15. sort paragraph styles

I'd like to have the option to sort paragraph styles by alphanumeric sequence. That would make it much easier to find the right styles after importing them from multiple documents.

  16. Highlight text

While I know this can be achieved by creating a thick rule and offsetting it just right, the ability to highlight text with 1 click (like the underline button) would be a time saver.

  17. Default text box to "Formatting Affects Text" rather than "Formatting Affects Container".

If a Text box uses all the same color of text within, upon direct selecting the box it should default to an active "Formatting Affects Text" rather than "Formatting Affects Container". Or give me the option to make this the default in Preferences. Pressing (J) before each and every swatch click to trigger this formatting is tedious and unnecessary.

  18. Line spacing measured in millimeters

When working with grid systems, measuring the line spacing in millimeters would be practical—similar to the default setting for strokes.

  19. A more efficient indexing system for book files.

A more efficient indexing system for book files would be ideal. Also, when using the Index window, it would be great if the window could stay open and allow me to continue entering words. If I don't select desired text, enter index reference, "add all," then close the window, it doesn't populate correctly.
It would be ideal for me to keep the window open, enter desired text (without selecting in the file), click "add all," then continue with more entries .

  20. Support Excel's Strict Open XML Spreadsheet format

InDesign should be able to Place an Excel file that's been saved as a Strict Open XML Spreadsheet (which appears to be a subset of the normal .xlsx workbook format). Currently, attempting to place an Excel file that's been saved as a Strict Open XML Spreadsheet results in a "Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation" error.

A sample Strict Open XML Spreadsheet file is attached.
