Fix for this issue is available in the latest InDesign version - InDesign 2023. The fix should solve most of the issues that were seen earlier.
A new option "Honor Text Indents in addition to Text Wrap" is introduced in Preferences > Composition dialog. It is turned ON by default for new documents created in ID2023. For documents created in previous InDesign versions, this option is turned off by default - which can be turned ON to see the improved behavior.

1. Recuperate txt + preview of product (sheets) of lost layouts
2. Depends
3. Options for opening : deciding if you want single line text boxes or some sort of intelligence to decide how close text could be together to form a single text box. Font characteristics would be nice but optional. Convert lookalike fonts to a single family maybe ? otherwise I don't see it feasible with the adobe masters to convert back to a single correct font.Bart Van Put

To add to this comment : IF multiple items (from diff layers) are grouped THEN they should STAY on their own layer, NOT jump to one layer for the group.
PJ G. What you are showing is not the same. We need things to stay on different layers, but SELECTABLE as a group. Selection is a big part of the time you spend on a job.
Had this question in my mind for years. Is it worth upgrading a standard iMac to a Mac Pro just to work smoother in indesign ? Jens thinks not, I assume. Or do you get a better performance just adding RAM memory ? (Working with image-heavy documents, grep styles, etc. at the moment on a server based environment with 6 colleagues; not exactly beachballs all the time, but you just feel something is slow.)
