This option was updated in InDesign 20.0 version to match industry standards and stay consistent. We standardized this behavior to make workflows more predictable across products.
We know that changes can take some adjustment, and we appreciate the feedback we received. Over time, users have adapted to this new behavior, which helps us maintain consistency and avoid confusion in future workflows.
We appreciate everyone’s input and your help in making InDesign better!

We're approaching the 5 year anniversary of this fundamental functionality request! I would also expect to be able to search / filter the library when relinking. Very inconvenient having to scroll through massive lists of assets to find the exact one I'm looking for.

Yes! This seems like an oversight? What's the logic behind this one window position not being saved with the workspace?

Yes! Great idea! I have the same need - I'm placing multiple, multiple-page documents more often than not. It would be great if you could change the default.

The fix of the issue is now available in the latest InDesign 2024(v19.5.0.084). We recommend you upgrade to the latest version for the fix.
If you are unable to see the update, go to the Creative Cloud application and click on the context menu on the top right and click on Check for App Updates.

Still in backlog, Adobe? Any acknowledgement of the issue 8 years on would be greatly appreciated by your paying customers.
We really just need to variable text to honour the paragraph style's tracking and hyphenation settings, rather than the current behaviour of variable text forcing negative tracking to illegible extents.
Surely a quick fix? You can call it an AI feature if that helps move this one along.
