[ID-4274243] InDesign clearing Undo stack frequently
Undo not working, InDesign 21.02x64
16.12.2025
As recently as yesterday, it was possible to perform more than 50 undo actions, but today only 1–2 steps are available, and my colleagues are experiencing the same issue.
Fix for this issue is now available in the latest InDesign Prerelease build - 21.2.0.27
Please try out this Prerelease build and let us know if it resolves the issue.
If you are not already part of InDesign's Prerelease program and would like to join and try out the latest Prerelease build, please do the following:
* Go to https://www.adobeprerelease.com/
* Sign in with your Adobe ID (the Email ID associated with your Adobe account)
* Select ‘Available Programs’
* Find ‘InDesign Prerelease’ and click ‘Join’
* Once you’ve joined, go to the Creative Cloud Desktop Application on your machine, click on 'Apps' in the section on the left
* Select the 'Pre-release' tab – there you will find the InDesign (Prerelease) build
* To check the Build number of the Prerelease build, hover the cursor over the name – you will see the Build number 'v_________'
* Select ‘Install’

When using the program normally, indesign will periodically delete ALL history between the current action and "Open" and erase it. Often within seconds of performing said actions. This has hamstrung all functionality of indesign in the context we use it for.
Reproduction: Normal Use
Version: Indesign 20.5.1
Expected result: History stretching back to document open, related undo/redo functionality
Actual result: Not that. No document history besides open, no related functionality.
Attached file shows a document that had been open and actively worked on for 3 hours prior to viewing the history panel, as well as the history actions being removed in-use.

Hi, I have the same problem. I’ve noticed that InDesign has lost the ability to go back more than a few steps in the undo history. I think this started after updating to InDesign 2026 – in version 2025 it worked without any issues. It’s very frustrating to work like this, it feels like going 20 years back to the QuarkXpress era.
I’ve tried resetting preferences and even going back to an older InDesign version, but nothing helped. I’m currently working with InDesign 21.0.1 x64, Windows 11 Home 25H2, and my graphics card does not support GPU acceleration.
Please let me know when this issue is fixed.
Thanks,
Martin -

Having this issue for the past couple of weeks here. Tried all the normal resets, tried reverting back to the previous major InDesign release, and even in desperation a Windows reinstall. No go.

First issue has been addressed before, but doesn't seem to get a fix. History step gets erased after 10 seconds, so you can undo only during these 10 seconds. Otherwise no undo, no redo. Huge issue.
Second issue, some pages get corrupted for no reason? Layers on these pages get disappeared and reappeared some times with no ability to access them. Can't move, can't see them some times and when the whole document is about to be exported, those pages give an error "There's an error in page 94" and the exportion is canceled. The only fix is to delete the page and recreate it one again, HOWEVER, when I did create one of them in the same page number as the corrupted one, it still gave me the same result, it was corrupted. I had to add 2 blank pages to get it to work. Like why? Does anyone else have the same problem? Please fix! I can't work like that and I have deadlines to reach.
Thank you,

Subject: Undo History Vanishing Automatically in InDesign v21.x (2025)
Description:
I am reporting a critical bug regarding the Undo/History feature in the latest version of Adobe InDesign.The Issue: Recently, the Undo function has stopped working correctly. Upon checking the History panel, I noticed that the history is being cleared/vanished automatically. As a result, I can only undo one or two steps, and then the option becomes unavailable. This is causing significant data loss and workflow disruption.
Observations:
I previously used InDesign v20.x (2025) on both Windows 10 and 11 without any issues.
The problem started occurring on InDesign v21.x (2026/Latest version).
Due to this instability, I have been forced to downgrade to InDesign v17.x (2022), which works perfectly.
I am currently having to export my modern files to IDML just to work in the older, stable version, which is very frustrating and time-consuming.
My System Specifications:
OS: Windows 11 Pro (24H2/25H2)
CPU: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400 (2.50 GHz)
RAM: 16 GB 6000MHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 (8GB)
Sometimes the text area is blank but has text, but when I zoom in or out, it backs.
Please investigate this as many users are experiencing similar issues. I would like to be notified when a fix or workaround is available.

This is impossible and really frustrating to work with. I can’t keep up with all the work, and clients are getting upset. Still, we’re paying for the subscription like everything is fine. It honestly feels disrespectful—to users in general, and to customers in particular. Is there anyone else we can turn to?

There were number of UNDO steps available earlier but recently it has stopped to 3-4 UNDOs at times and sometime even 0. It varies but doesn't increase beyond 3-4. This is happening in the latest version of InDesign. Hope this is resolved immediately, as it's very frustrating to work without this feature working properly.

I was reading a thread about this issue where the user said they have 16GB of RAM and people at their office who have more RAM are not experiencing this issue. To confirm - I also have 16GB of RAM.
We seriously need this to be addressed. I know someone is working on it but it is maddening and messing up everyone's workflow.
Wait - is Adobe's undo broken too? Is that why we can't go back to an earlier version? I joke, but for real. This is rough.

Anu updates on the bug? It is impossible to work, and the previous version 2024 that was reported as functional is unavailable. I had to put a lot of important projects on standby and it is directly affecting my business.

my indesign is doing the same thing... just started a week ago. had an agent remote in and remove all adobe programs and reinstall indesign, this seemed to fix it. however it started doing it again today, I did notice that I done the version update and then it started. I had another agent remote in he said it could be my GPU Driver, so we unchecked that setting in indesign, however it is still doing it. need to know a fix as it is very inconvenient.

I started having this same issue and a couple of weeks ago and even, coincidentally, had a laptop upgrade and InDesign software updated to the newest version last week and it's still happening.

Whatever the issue is, InDesign seems to be deteriorating a little bit each day, between history disappearing, text disappearing, and now objects disappearing and unable to select them. Hoping for a fix soon, as these issues are pushing me past deadlines.

This has been a problem for about a week now. At first I believed the issue was not being on a 2k+ resolution for GPU performance, but that was obviously ridiculous and now I see that the issue is becoming common for everybody.
